Another one of these dreary "what is the forum coming to posts"
Posted by: Sloop John B on 17 July 2017
I'm reminded of the song the lunatics are taking over the asylum.
I have 3 members blocked and can't seem to find a post where they are not prattling on and on and on.
If I were Naim I'd be very worried but I suppose the reappearance of Adam M may be a sign of the empire striking back.

Agree with you SJB
Yesterday morning I was reading a thread in HI-FI corner and Couldn't believe how it had deteriorated to such a level of nastyness between a few posters.
Couldn't believe how seriously these people take their HIFI equipment and the vitoral for anyone who doesn't like their purchase.I really find it quite laughable really but in a sad way.Its almost they can never stop upgrading their systems despite them sounding pretty amazing to what your average person in the street at home would use but they seem to listen to the HI FI from what I read of these posts.
I use a NAT 01 tuner and have loved it for 20 years but don't use Naim amps and use a Nagra valve pre and Dartzeel NHB 108 power amp and it's so holographic and timberaly right to my ears.I actually feel uncomfortable saying I don't use Naim amps here......says it all.
I don't read such nastyness on other forums - people there seem more positive and not so obsessed with my products better than yours playground mentality.
Yes glad Adam Meridith has returned - just so dry in his humour.

Don't forget the Music Room. Probably the best part of the forum

Just provided you avoid the Trump, Labour and Brexit threads!
SJB,
Within special interest groups, you'll always get some people obsessed with a particular viewpoint who can't consider anything outside their individual narrow viewpoint, and it's natural to find them "prattling on and on and on".
(I hope I'm not one of the three otherwise you won't see this!)
TC,
I think the same logic applies to the nastiness. These same people view the world through a strong perceptive filter and hence can't acknowledge that any other view could possible come from a rational mind. So to them anyone holding an opposing view MUST be trolling, and they react according to this perception of others. There again there are also just simple personality clashes, and these can be exacerbated by the limitations of text communication, particularly when people dor not natively speak the same language ( e.g. the Brits and the Americans ).

SJB,
Is this a test
I blame Brexit
Good summary Huge. With threads you mentioned I usually read only (not reply) for amusement & it has to be said a better & 'broader' understanding for my own education. I do get tired of the one track minds & when those 'names' post I tend to just skim them with raised eye brows; the labour thread is a classic for this. Having worked with & lived in USA the Trumpton tread is no real surprise, I've seen it all & heard a lot worse, but those folks tend not to read much & don't do joined-up writing so I don't expect to find them on the forum. The big surprise is thrumpton has 2000 entries & labour 1500, so much to talk about ??? I don't think so somehow, more like you say "prattling on and on and on" & over & over & same old same old & then write it all over again. And I bet no one has shifted their position as a result of all that rhetoric even so much as half a degree.
But to expand on SJB's forum standards premise, the Best Jokes thread is not the cutting edge place it used to be.

Of course I haven't changed my view - because I'm RIGHT!
I moaned about this a while ago and Richard's sage advice was that if I found a thread uninteresting or irritating I should just ignore it, which is something I have done and the Forum has been more enjoyable to me as a result.
There are those who suggest things which are inappropriate such as telling the person who wants a new CD player to get a streamer, or those who say 'my system won't play, help me NOW' without giving the slightest clue about what the system is. I can't decide if they are lazy or dim, or perhaps both.
There are some great threads though, such as Chris's redundancy thread where people were so empathetic and helpful. And I've had loads of support after my accident, which really helped me through the early difficult stage. And thankfully nobody has suggested the Hugo 2 as a cure for my frontal lobe brain injury..... yet!

+1.
On the plus side, the more posts there are by SJB the more I am reminded of the late great John Peel, which can only be a thoroughly good thing. With apologies to [@mention:1566878603876139] for veering off topic, here's a favourite John Peel quote, just for the heck of it: "As I've mentioned before, in a decently ordered society members of Half Man Half Biscuit would be routinely carried shoulder high through the streets of every city they visited."
Thank God - and I thought I was the only mad one, thinking the Forum was descending into some form of magic-mushroom-induced craze...
I had to sign out of some of the threads recently (notably a CDX2 thread) where it just degraded into.... (not sure what it was, but not much to do with a CD player).
And why do people endlessly requote previous responses? When you look at them on an iPhone they are ridiculously long.
Some of the contributions have been particularly dire recently but hopefully there will be light at the end of the tunnel, which, as any HMHB fan knows, is the light of an oncoming train.
The Forum I engage with is full of interesting, generous and usually positive people.
I don't bother with threads that will irritate me-it is not hard to see what they are (they are usually in the HiFi corner!)
As ever the Forum is what you bring to it. I don't come on here for an argument!

Re HH ....... why do people endlessly requote previous responses?
Thats my pet grrr HH. It has a place for continuity purposes in some cases, most times better with some cut/delete editing. But in most all cases its completely not needed. Forum improvement suggestion - kill 'reply with quote'.
seems ok, was and always will be the way of forums.
the CDX2 thread was to me just a spirited discussion, no hard feelings, it's only hi-fi.
Mike-B posted:Forum improvement suggestion - kill 'reply with quote'.
I disagree Mike - people just need to use it properly. Context can be completely lost on some threads without being able to quote. I can see this can be a bit of a problem when trying to use this feature on a mobile device so perhaps its more of a tool problem than user
Yes James, use it properly is the right way. But people just don't/won't, lazy, DGAF etc. whatever. Kill it will force them to copy/paste if & when they feel it important enough to do so. Or maybe Hoopla can restrict the numbers or word count.

While we are on pet grrrs, another is the incorrect spelling if it's and its.
Sorry Mike xxx

Sorry Mike xxx
And the 15 mins edit time limit won't allow me to correct my own incorrect spelling
Sometimes I see a thread, and think, pleeeeeease, nodody reply to this, and it will just sink to the botton of the list and disappear. Somebody always does, though. The simple answer is, just don't read it. After all, I don't think many people would read every article on every page of a newspaper, so why would you do so on this forum?
It'''s just laziness Nigel. Plus fat fingers tapping out on a small iPad screen keyboard is not conducive. Mrs Mike can spot a grammar or spelling error at 20 paces & with the page closed, it used to be very annoying when she typed up my papers in the days before laptops & I freely admit that engineer type people are very lazy (don't give a f-f) but I'm now retired & life is far to short these days. xxx you too

Ah, funny you should say that: I've heard that the Hugo 2... (actually I haven't - heard that, or even heard.)

Because it only works on the temporal lobe where the auditory cortex resides!
(I do not own any Chord products, nor am I suggesting their superiority or inferiority...I am simply pulling Nigel's leg.)

yes, we were not always agree but the discussion on analog/vs digital /pro and cons was interesting. a lot of members in the discussion and 6 pages for the topic. As someone said, we don't read all pages of a newspaper, we choose what is interesting for us.
