Nap 140 question
Posted by: Smithfire on 24 July 2017
Sorry for asking a basic question, but could you leave a nap 140 on permanently? This is paired to a 72 but no hi cap.
Many thanks
Clive
Yes.
Thanks James
I only ask because I may end up running the tv through it.
Clive
I ran mine like that for years (complete with 72 pre). The power amp warms up quickly from cold but the pre-amp likes to be kept on. I really should dig my old 140 out, service it and use it
Ah so you flicked on the 140 when needed and permanently kept the 72 on?.
Clive
I think most of us leave Naim power amps powered up. I've always found they take a good while (12-24 hours) to come back on song after I've powered down for a holiday etc.

The 140 powers the 72, so it's a case of 140 off, 72 off. Just leave it on and forget about it. Use the mute switch on the 72 if you like. If you use the forum search you will see that this question has been asked many, many times, and the answer is always the same.
Thank you Hungryhalibut.

No it was left on. I probably didn't make that clear in my post. We got there in the end though
Not to confuse you SmthFire but if you buy a HiCap then you can turn off the 140 and the 72 will still be on
Thanks...yeah used to have a hicap running a 62/135's set up back in the 90's. Very nice. Seemed to remember the 140 not having a internal fan so was pondering if leaving it on for long periods was the done thing.
Clive
The 135 fan only came on when the amp was driving difficult loads or running at high volume. The 140 doesn't have (or need) a fan and just runs barely warm most of the time. No issue with leaving it on.
...I have always left my equipment powered up, never had any issues...
Naim poweramps are designed to work best with a very low quiescent current (and set-up that way), i.e. when not playing they use very little power and generate very little heat.
They're designed such that they can be left on all the time.
Thanks guys.....the consensus being you can leave a nap 140 on all the time. Which is great because I can replace my venerable nait 3 with a 72/140 combo and just forget about it!
