How to stream audio to NAIM NS01

Posted by: Chris Taylor on 25 July 2017

Hi, what is the easiest and most cost effective way to stream audio to an NS01? I don't think it can be done directly by this unit and if so what additional kit do I need? Do I need to obtain another piece of NAIM kit or are there cheaper alternatives that will produce decent results?

Thanks in anticipation of any advice.   Chris

You can't, because the 01 is a server and not a streamer. You need to explain what else you have and what you are trying to achieve. What exactly do you want to stream?

I am using NAP 250, NAC 52 and Supercap to power the NS01 which I use primarily to play ripped CD's. I am exploring how or if I can stream audio from various available sources and store on the NS01 hard disc for future play.  I have been told by dealer who sold me the NS01 that it can be done by acquiring another bit of kit but I am trying to understand if this is right and if so, how?

What are these 'various available sources'? If the 01 has the downloads folder you could put downloads on it, but you can't use it like a cassette recorder, if that's what you mean. To stream Tidal for example you'd want something like an NDX and then use the 01 as a server over Ethernet.

Hi Chris,

You can, but not in the same way as to a Naim Streamer. If you have a NAS you can place your music files in folders which you can then 'share'. These can then be seen by the NS01 when you attach it to your network via the RJ45 port. This will enable you to then 'stream' those files passing them out via the spdif into your DAC.

You can then choose whether you wish to use those folder(s) as Shares or Stores; makes no difference to the sound quality in my experience.

I used my NS01 like this for many years.

Yes, you can do that, though it didn't seem like that's what Chris meant. That's not streaming, it's simply gathering music stored together. Hopefully he will clarify.

Hi, thanks for the various replies. It seems it can be done but requires purchase of additional kit as described. I need to decide the most cost effective route or whether to get a dedicated streamer.  Regards,  Chris

Yes I was exploring whether I could stream say from Spotify on to the NS01 hard disc. Sounds like it is better to buy a specific streamer.    Chris

Hi Chris,

There is a way - but, it is complex and flaky, so I wouldn't recommend it.

Thanks I will consider getting a streamer and going an easier route. Regards.  Chrus
