ndx into ndac configuration
Posted by: oferr on 26 July 2017
Hello everybody,
I am sure I read it somewhere and cannot find it.
Could you please let me know the sequence of events to be done in order to ndac an ndx?
Thank you very much !!!!
Assuming you've connected all the wires correctly.
Go to settings (little 'wrench' key on the remote): Digital Output = Enable, Analogue Output = Disable.
That's it.
System automation is another thing - best to follow Naim's paper on that.
Thank you !!!
You're welcome.
If you decide to set up the system automation (which I strongly advise you do), you can drop me a line (email is in my profile) and I will send Naim's instructions and some tips.
Generally it's good to get the nDAC to switch inputs as needed.
Alternatively this is the link to Naim's website with the PDF:

Before I got the NDX, I set the Naim DAC to control my NAC, such that pressing a button on the DAC panel would change to the correct input on the NAC. On adding the NDX, I found I could not control the NAC from both the DAC and the NDX, but I could control the NAC and DAC from the NDX.
So, pressing DAC panel buttons no longer changes the NAC, but selecting all sources via the NDX remote control or the Naim app sets all pieces perfectly. Well worth the sacrifice.

Nick - what you describe is actually quite easy to set up. Each component needs to be linked with a 'control' cable though (generally it's a mono mini-jack to mini-jack or mini-jack to RCA in case of NACs). Otherwise appropriate codes will not be sent from NDX to nDAC and NAC.

Y-adapter into the NAC, then? I haven't tried that -- will do. Though I hardly ever operate the DAC from its panel any more. NDX manages all. But, I am curious to test, for the sake of completeness.
I confirmed the Naim DAC will not relay commands it receives by wire from the NDX; so, I have connected the NDX RC functions directly to the DAC, NAC, and CD (splitting one of the lines with a Y provided by my dealer).
Thanks, Adam.

Nick - never tried a Y-cable, so cannot comment on that.
I'd imagine that the control connections are like this:
NDX > remote control out 1 > remote control in on NAC
NDX > remote control out 2 > remote control in on nDAC
nDAC > remote control out > remote control in on CD
Nick - I've just re-read your post. Most odd that the nDAC does not relay commands via it's 'remote out' socket.
But glad you've found a solution.
Enjoy,
Adam

I tried that on Day-1. No good. I asked Naim HQ, and they confirmed that the Naim DAC does not relay/pass through RC commands it receives by wire. It will initiate a by-wire command it receives directly from a NARCOM345. Once the NDX is added, there is the possibility that the NDX and DAC are each programmed to send conflicting commands to the NAC. It is probably a good idea that Naim HQ does not encourage perfectionists like us to set up the DAC and the NDx to BOTH boss the NAC.
