C'mon guys (and gals), what does the atom sound like?
Posted by: Sloop John B on 26 July 2017
i can't believe that the atom is now in the wild and posts berating Naim still seem more active.
Surley there are quite a few of you that have sound waves dancing operatically around your rooms which started their lives being shunted through Ethernet to the atom.
And they sound like?
and the app works like?
and chromecast ( my money is on this causing the delays) how does it function/sound?
ssshh has anyone tried to see if Roon "sees the atom" ?
dont be bashful.
Everyone are probably trying to figure out the app,or how to unfreeze it.
Or simply enjoying their Atom so much they have no time (yet) to post.

Do people like this actually exist?

If you don't believe they exist, why did you ask the question(s)?
It did all start with just a couple of people (Adam and Eve I think their names were) and now look how many there are!

I think you'll find it's Cú Chullain and Éimhear but it's a common enough mistake.

No, you misunderstand. I am talking about husband and wife Adam and Eve of Basingstoke. They were apparently the first to put a deposit down on the Atom and must have theirs by now so should be able to answer your questions.
Common enough mistake I suppose.
Start with an atom, then two meet and upgrade to a molecule. Just look where that can lead...
Best regards, FT
No news is good news
Heard it at the Acoustica show this year with a Core, driving some Dynaudio Emit M20 speakers. Thought it was a pretty stunning system myself. Was very impressed.
I'm sure that once the first Atoms arrive, 'burn in' is suddenly not relevant anymore - like for the Kudo's 707's.

Also heard the same combination at Acoustica - that system was one of the highlights of the show.
Still waiting on mine arriving I imagine others may be in a similar position, but soon hopefully.

Roon could potentially make or break the Atom.
I have mine.....
A quick general few observations from my first few hours with it...(Only last night)
I'm using B&W CM10 S2 I purchased for the job.....Agree they are over kill, but I like the noise they make. And am fully aware that the atom will not run these to there full potential no matter how good it is.
For the last 8 months I have been using a Linn DSM streamer/amp that was on loan from my dealer, having flogged my stack for cleaner lines and a one box solution. That and multi room capability as I have numerous QB's and Muso's around.
Sound - It's as sharp and punchy as any Naim gear I've heard....It really grabs the bass by the neck and controls it, punchy and fast. I liked...a lot. The mids are sublime, I'm following new parts of old songs as with the highs, I can hear symbols drift out just that tiny bit longer....it's good....really good. Even with the relatively low power against my speakers...it works.
Build - Everything you would expect from a Naim product and pretty much as advertised...Although the power point at the back is loose, it may be it's meant to be like that, I'll get back to you when I find out.
The front screen is lovely, but you kind of have to have it at eye level to see it properly, as viewing it from angles doesn't really work. It's a great thing to have.
I have a small wish list of what I'd like to happen with the screen, ie...leaving the track info onscreen, as the album art takes over after a while, few little bits like that, which may be possible, I'm still exploring.
Couple of points to note, As it stands just now...multiroom isn't working or is dropping out. I've not explored or set up in great depth, so I'm not moaning as it may be me. The app has also crashed or lost connection again...I've not checked any networks settings yet, so jury's out.
I am fairly taken with the doofer (remote). It's brilliant.
Hope that's enough for now guy's
Tastie, the mains inlet should probably be slightly loose. Naim now allow a bit of movement on all their IEC inlets as this provides a bit of physical decoupling which supposedly sounds better, so I would imagine the Atom follows suit here.

Cheers Richard....I did wonder.
Obviously first thing I noticed trying to plug it in. Heart sank!! I was going to ring and ask. Thanks for putting my mind at rest.
The impedance curve makes the B&W CM10 S2 a very challenging load for an Atom, it won't sound at it's best trying to drive that difficult a load.

It means I had finger trouble and you replied before I could edit my post properly - (see revised post above).

I knew that already....just in a less technical sense.
It still sounds pretty damn good...believe me

Huge, is that because of the 3 woofers which are supposed (?) to do the work at 115 Hz?

It's rather more complicated than just that...
It involves the resonant frequencies of the drivers, interaction of the drivers and the cabinet (at lower frequencies, the acoustic bass alignment is particularly important) and the design of the crossovers. The high phase angle close to an impedance minimum will cause particular problems for power-amps, as the imaginary component of the current in the speakers will impose a much higher current demand on the output transistors.
And, and how does its SQ compare with Q2's?
Chag -
Cant help but think it should have been called Naitom.............

And possibly a more difficult question: how does it compare with UQ2+NAP 100 in terms of SQ?
