C'mon guys (and gals), what does the atom sound like?
Posted by: Sloop John B on 26 July 2017
i can't believe that the atom is now in the wild and posts berating Naim still seem more active.
Surley there are quite a few of you that have sound waves dancing operatically around your rooms which started their lives being shunted through Ethernet to the atom.
And they sound like?
and the app works like?
and chromecast ( my money is on this causing the delays) how does it function/sound?
ssshh has anyone tried to see if Roon "sees the atom" ?
dont be bashful.
Great post Tastiehastie, not sure about the technical jargon as detailed by Huge. Will Neats work?
Glad your enjoying it [@mention:69004037512168611].
Can the display be turned off fully?

I don't think you can...played around a bit and it's a no go. You can dim the accent lights (badge and buttons) not the screen though.

Cheers Toto...can't speak for the Neats....but it's driving some pretty hard to drive B&w's...and cooing fine...until you get silly...but it's doing it
Thought i'd get the maual out tonight have a flick through....they have packed one for a uniti core! Doh!!
On another sad note...multi room isn't working...tried it several different ways. Nada..oh well can't win em all.
(Fyi multi room tries (hardwired/just wifi/wifi on 2.4 only/wifi on 2.5 only..hardwired and wifi)
The qb seem to control both....then the atom drops off, the atom won't even pick up the qb.
Who cares....it's here, sounds blitzing and is indeed a feat of engineering...multiroom will have to wait....me and Naim are friends again.
this is the new direction from naim forget box count and add on power supplies . in the 70s it was the tuner/amplifier now the all in one. they will sell in bucket loads all good news for a british company
Curious as to how it compares to the DSM you had on loan (although the DSM is much more expensive)?

So you can't turn off the screen, this may be annoying if you wish to listen as you sleep in a dark room...this is why I'm having to swap my valve amplifier for transistor.

There has been released firmware updates for Mu-so and QB to beta testers, that should make multi room possible with the new streamers. Talk to Naim support, and you will probably be able to get the firmware, or they can say when it will be released as a normal update through the Naim app.

I think the Dsm is the same price mate...(sneaky)
and like for like...it's chalk and cheese...The atom blows it away in every department...(although i liked the linn app) It really is half the machine the atom is....and then some.

I'll follow this up pal...i have been down this road before with multiple muso's and qb's...including a technician to my house...with new routers etc..no joy!
it'll click at some point i'm sure...but cheers...i'll have a word

I know what you mean, i listened to wish you were here(white album cover) last night, whisky in hand...lights out. My eyes were being burnt out....the abilty to dim or switch off the screen...or change it to hold what you want on it would be a bonus.
I think I was told at a show that you can switch off the screen. You can do this (or set it to go off after a few minutes) with the NDS using the remote.

I'm sure this is something Naim will fix with an update at some point
Likewise with the 272,after a few minutes of non manipulation, the display goes blank.
I'm really pleased you're happy Tastie, had some great fun over the months expressing frustration with each other and some of the other Guy's. Mine are still in the ether, Dealer is probably on credit hold now until December - LOL. 1st up is Atom, SX3's & NAP100. We'll see how that fits together. Then is Atom, NAP200DR and speakers TBD. Chord Shawline gluing it altogether.
In addition. the Custom Design 103's have fallen into one of DHL's sink holes, if this is the shape of things to come it's going to be weeks before I can comment. Anyway 'Her Indoors' has decided to butt in with a request. The speakers HAD to be the white one's, Im not sure if they're really cool or really 80's and I need to to buy some grey, red and black wallpaper for the dinning room.
I'm still waiting on my Atom. My dealer will be coming around with it in two weeks time, so that I can audition it against the SU I have on load. However I'm interested to hear what others think of it so far? Has anyone tried playing DSD material? How does it sound?
Not sure if the new Unit range now plays DSD natively or still needs to convert it to PCM like the SU, 272 and NDX do.
Seen it today and wasn't expecting it to be available and hooked up to half descent speakers
first impression is how small it is...seriously, I didn't expect it to be so petite. Compared to the qute, half the size.
Very well constructed and classy. Very heavy and dense.
this is a marvel and wife friendly....in my small flat, a god blessing
the room wasn't very well lit but quality was beautiful and the top very classy with big chrome volume
it was playing a 320kb radio feed and it sounded very nice. I pushed the sound and the b&w floorstanders could not handle it. That was surprising but will not read into it too much
the unit so small that I started to think about the star for a second. I then realised that appearances are misleading. This marvel box is expensive but can't believe what you get for such a small volume...outstanding.
Waiting for mine to arrive. No doubt the star will also be good but the atom is the sweet spot for me.
Can some owners give us some info on testing several feed and speakers please
I spent a few hours with the atom this morning, running it into Rega RX3s and Focal 926s. I also had a muso running so I could quickly switch between them using spotify connect.
I originally switched from separates to the muso when it was released, both for convenience and because it sounded great. The atom with its screen and proper remote though, got me yearning.
So yeah, I went out this morning with the intention of coming back with an atom / speakers. I came back empty handed. The atom was as good as I expected - sounds great, really nice screen, snappy OS, and that remote...lovely! But the muso, I have even more respect for it now. The stereo imaging is obviously better with the separates, but overall, the muso sounded better than the atom/rx3 combo IMO. There was a serious lack of bass with the rx3s. The atom/926 combo faired much better, but I'm still deciding whether its £3,500 better...
Picked up my Atom yesterday (27th July) and it is now installed and working.
Sounds wounderful, and just was was needed for our family room.
For Multiroom to work with the Atom, I am informed that we will need an updated streamer software / firmware which Naim has in hand.
I will post further updates when Atom is fully run in.

Well I finally got my Atom and was in a way a bit sceptical it would be an improvement on a UQ2 and Nap100 but there is a definite all round improvement. I still have the Nap100 but with the Atom sounding so good I have left it in its box. To me it gives good deep bass with plenty of detail. My speakers are the rather impoverished neat Iota and the Atom has brought them to life and this is definitely the best they have sounded.
As for Dave-Mac observations perhaps its all relative to how much bass you like. I find the Muso excellent overall, but I find the bass sometimes can be a little overwhelming ion some tracks. I would also say that the muso has plenty of deep bass but it lacks definition. In terms of stereo imaging the Atom wins hands down.
I have tried Quobuz via built-in chromecast which works well forand sounds very good. The only issue is it doesn't display album cover on the nice big screen front. Not sure if this is a limitation of chromecast or a Naim issue, but disappointing none the less. I also found that Tidal doesn't have seek to to time which it did on UQ2.Chrome cast opens up the range of compatible apps giving far more choice.
Overall I'm happy and sounds great .

Crabby,
are we talking of the same unit? I saw and toyed with the Atom yesterday and my impression is that it's globally almost twice the size of the UnitiQute.

BTW, it seems that nobody mentioned a not so marginal detail: the speaker sockets are finally 'right': left on the left and right on the right. No DIN sockets, but this was when Naim's explanations on the greater sound quality (impedance wise) of the DIN sockets had a meaning, so here's another question we can ask ourselves.

It's similar size a little less depth but slightly wider and taller.

We don't need to ask - DIN plugs are staying.
The Qute didn't have DIN sockets, and the Atom still doesn't; but the Nova and Star have DIN inputs and DIN outputs.

P.S. Actually the explanation of better sound from DIN connections is from the single earth connection preserving a star earthing arrangement, rather than from impedance concerns. When I used to build amps, I used DIN connections for the same reason.
