C'mon guys (and gals), what does the atom sound like?

Posted by: Sloop John B on 26 July 2017

i can't believe that the atom is now in the wild and posts berating Naim still seem more active.

Surley there are quite a few of you that have sound waves dancing operatically around your rooms which started their lives being shunted through Ethernet to the atom.

And they sound like?

and the app works like?

and chromecast ( my money is on this causing the delays) how does it function/sound?

ssshh has anyone tried to see if Roon "sees the atom" ?

dont be bashful.

What I had been waiting for since years – a MU–SO washing machine. Thanks, Naim.

I didn't know that the Muso was washable!

BTW, it seems that nobody mentioned a not so marginal detail: the speaker sockets are finally 'right': left on the left and right on the right. No DIN sockets, but this was when Naim's explanations on the greater sound quality (impedance wise) of the DIN sockets had a meaning, so here's another question we can ask ourselves.

We don't need to ask - DIN plugs are staying.

The Qute didn't have DIN sockets, and the Atom still doesn't; but the Nova and Star have DIN inputs and DIN outputs.

We don't need to ask - DIN plugs are staying.

Thanks, Huge – written on the stone. Apart that I was speaking of sockets and not of plugs (sorry for being pedantic, but I come here to practice my English too so let's start with the basics), I'll now hibernate for a year or two, and when I'll wake up I'll take a look at the then current range of Naim gear, looking for a green logo and DIN sockets...

Now, down into the hibernating machine. Have a good summer and don't forget to take hammer and chisel wherever you go. M.

One aesthetic I wasn't so keen on was the colour of the volume indicator lights on the dial. They looked very yellow compared to what's on the muso, especially against the bluey white light of the ring behind the dial. That's really splitting hairs though, it was sexy as hell apart from that.

Posted on: 30 July 2017 by Huge

Max, I feel that the plugs and sockets sort of go together somehow!

But yes look at the pictures of the Nova and Star and you can see the DIN sockets (being pedantic you're right!).

(btw Being equally pedantic shutting down for the summer is aestivating (same derivation as estate) rather than hibernating as hibernating applies to winter (same derivation as iverno)!   )

It's all those plugs and sockets you know!

first impression is how small it is...seriously, I didn't expect it to be so petite. Compared to the qute, half the size.

Crabby,

are we talking of the same unit? I saw and toyed with the Atom yesterday and my impression is that it's globally almost twice the size of the UnitiQute.

I may have exaggerated a bit being mediterranean

i was impressed by how square it was and less depth in particular. Rest the same. I wasn't expecting it to be so small for me..

Right... so, now that we've all agreed on the looks and plugs of the Atom ;-)  Does anyone else have some insight into how the Atom sounds?

I am loving mine.  Running it with a pair of Naim intro 2's.  As it is my first dive into the audio world, all I can say is that i am amazed.

i have similar issues to other here with the screen being bright, and you can't select what its defaults to.  My grandson loves it too.  His small fingers are constantly poking and prodding.  Yes, I know, I should be controlling him, but sadly he is not one to be controlled.

The only other issue I have is with adding radio stations.  As it is, the selection of stations is excellent, but there is however, one small insignificant radio station here in NZ that I cannot live without.  I don't seem to be able to add it as a station.  At present I have a work around by using tunein app on an ipad and streaming that the the atom (sounds like pants though).  Hopefully its just a software issue, and I will be able to listen to Radio ActiveFM soon.

I tried to get down to AudioBarn on saturday, but had a flat rear tyre on my motorbike, so had to deal with that. Sorry I didnt get to see/hear final version in the metal.

Loving the sound of mine since Thursday, paired with Neat Iotas as a 2nd system. However as some have mentioned I really would like to have the option of turning off all the display lights completely, that includes the on / off button which annoying stays on in whatever power mode chosen.

Just collected mine all setup and ready to go  but the ultimate torture I have no speakers and the speaker cable is due later this week : (

Setup via Lan was easy, only concern after setup the unit kept powering on and then off every 5 secs, went on for a while so I tried to power down it carried on eventually I stopped almost like a boot loop.

Listened on some wired Headphones: (

Build wise it is super sexy but assumed display was touch but it is not and the power relay I find the noise too loud and irritating.

Also can anyone share a link to the manual, sure the dealer had opened mine as it has a Uniti Core manual and the front plastic was peeled back, oddly he could not demo but had a Uniti Core on display.

I'd be returning that then, unless he made you aware and it was reflected in the price.

[@mention:1566878604014936], from the Forum, looks like some of the Atoms have been dispatched with Uniti Core 'Quick Set up guides'. My Atom had the Uniti Core guide, and the box was all sealed with Naim tape. So you are not alone.

Likewise, the front plastic had started come away from the screen. Screen in perfect condition.

My Atom looks and sounds fantastic

Thanks Simon, was getting irritated by the dealer, mine was as you describe, he said it came in an outer box so the white box had a few squash marks and the closing flap had been pulled.

Based on what you say I put it down to a nosey dealer, reckon most of us would sneak a peak if it was the only one in store.

Questions are the pins in the power chord box speaker pins assume we should use them, I ordered NACA5 with Maim plugs both ends which clearly will not work as the orientation is north to south.

Hi All,

I have two questions for you lucky Atom owners;

1.  Does it have an Alarm function, can you wake up to a pre-set Radio station ?

2.  Does it have a sleep function, can you set it to switch off after say 1 or 2 hours?

Thanks in advance.

In answer to your questions (from what i can see and have experianced with my Atom)

The Atom knows the time of day.

1. No alarm function, however this could be suggested to Naim as a future feature, with an 'on' duration.

2. The Atom has a setting for 'Auto Standby time' - this is triggered when the Atom has been idle (as in not playing), the settings are Never, 5 min, 10 min, 20 min (default), 30 min, 1 hour or 2 hours.

From your question, I suspect you wish to use the Atom like a radio alarm clock, currently this functionality is not avaiable.

You could use you iphone for the alarm and then trigger the Atom from the app, when you have finished listening then turn off Atom from your iPhone.

I hope this helps

Simon

I'm trying my hardest to move away from my Sonos but Naim aren't making it easy are they?

Looks like I'm buying an old skool hi-fi timer to trigger my amplifier on and off and keep the Atom constantly playing.

We received our store demo Atom today. The first thing we did was play from a Core music store and connect the Atom to a pair of ATC SCM7s. These speakers are interesting as they only go so loud, even with NAP500 and I wondered if the Atom would be able to drive them at all. Even though very new there is something very right and beautiful about the way the Atom sounds, all the usual Naim strengths but with style, finesse and detail I didn't hear before at this price point, and surprising weight and drive as well. I'm very excited, for current Naim owners the sound of the Atom may not break new ground, but I think it will attract new customers to Naim for whom it will be a revelation.

Can't wait to try it tomorrow for the ultimate mullet test - with S-800s.

I believe the front panel display and other lights on the Atom cannot be turned off, which might be a deal breaker for anyone wanting it in a bedroom.

Chris, from what I gleaned from the guys over the weekend, a facility to fully switch off the display may be in the works for a future firmware release.
