Muso Qb Airplay Connection Issues..

Posted by: Burgy100 on 28 July 2017

So we have gone to Cornwall for a few weeks holiday and have taken our Qb with us, I've downloaded my music collection on a 2 gig HD and tested it at home..perfect. Now the wifi in the cottage isn't blisteringly fast but I manage to stream and write this plea without an issue, but for the love of me I cannot connect the blasted thing to the network and therefore cannot use the app to use the HD! I go through the motions iof connecting via the app, get to the purple flashing light which picks up the Qb with its identity hit next and wait and wait and wait, in the meantime the light has gone to solid white and then the app gives me failed to connect with an unexpected error and therefore fails to pick up any room, ironically it is connected to internet because it will play all of the presets in iRadio. I have tried it with my iPad and iPhone to no avail. I have tried and died to use its built in Wifi and connect to itself but can surmise this only available on muso and not muso-Qb as it does not seem to emit it's on wifi! So right now I'm stuck using Bluetooth to stream with intermittent dropouts any clues or help would be most appreciated please.

NB each cottage has its own wireless and is governed by the owner with stuff to stop large downloads and stuff could they have some firewall or security that prevents it completing its airplay task?

When I installed mine at home I had to move the Qb physically closer (the same room) to the router in order for it to do the initial connection. Once I moved it back to the planned location it continued to connect and work fine.

In a similar vein, have you got an ethernet cable that you could connect up to allow it to do that initial set-up?

If the Qb has a solid white, it's obviously connected to the Internet by wifi and anyway you say the iradio settings all work, so what you should do now is forget AirPlay and just put your iPhone onto the Cottage's wifi. It should now find the Qb when you open the app. If it doesn't you can set it up in the app as a new Qb if necessary and when the app asks you what colour the light is, you tap white and it will come back with a message to the effect "job done then".

The built in wifi is only used during setup. Once you've got a white light you are no longer in setup.....

Hmmm ok guys, thanks for that. Gonna have to see the owner regarding Ethernet! And regarding the white light showing connected, I have tried that but will give it a go again.

There is no problem plugging an Ethernet cable into the back of a wifi router. They are designed for that and you won't hurt it! You will need to buy a cable but they are cheap as chips on eBay from any number of suppliers and I have found they mail them really fast.

The other thing is that once your phone is on the cottage's wifi and you start the app (I suggest you stop the app by swiping up and then start it again), if it doesn't find your Qb you should have a screen with two links on it "set up new product" and "find my rooms". Turn on your Qb so that you have the white light at the back and then select "find my rooms" on the app. It should immediately find the Qb and give you the icon to select.

Thankyou so much David and Gavin for your advice. Will talk to the cottage owner and see if I can plug an Ethernet direct in and take it from there, but I must say this is not as expected for such a high end product in its class.

If you are worried about using Ethernet,  put the Qb a yard or so from the router and it should be fine to set up using wifi. Then once it's all working you will be able to move the Qb to where you want it.

But if you have a white light and can play stuff from the radio presets on the Qb, it is already connected to the Internet and the Ethernet cable wouldn't help at all. You just have to get the app to see the Qb. For the first time I think you shiuld have the Qb actually on and connected to the Internet.

if you can't get it working then ring Naim technical support and they will talk you through it. They are there throughout the day during the weekend.

It has been sorted by connecting the unit via Ethernet. Now the issue appears to be that the owner has set up 3 separate phantom wifi SSID's via a single WAP! So in essence it would connect the real wifi but would be unable to pick up an IP address with the cottage name!

That doesn't sound quite right ... unless the owner has separate ADSL modems all with the same SSID for neighbouring holiday properties and so you didn't know which SSID you had connected to ... which if the case is clueless by the owner... but at least you have working.

I suspect the owner has one modem and then one wifi access point per cottage, with different SSIDs. But that shouldn't stop the Qb connecting to the same wifi as the iPhone...
