552/NAP500/nSats

Overkill? Unbalanced? Perhaps...

But, while waiting for a replacement tweeter for my SL2s from Naim i am using a pair of nSats on wall brackets. These little beauties punch well above their weight! and have this explosive percussion characteristic that can be frightening but very engaging at the same time. Vocals have this utterly beguiling characteristic.

Of course, they lack the 'ultimate' bass -- but what is there is very tuneful and well timed.  And in any case, not sure more bass in my office would work. Bass from active SL2s is about the limit i reckon.

My daughter made a worrying comment when she listened to them over the weekend. "Not a million miles between these nSats and my SL2s" !!! Wot!! Perhaps the tweeter has been deteriorating over time and the nSats is making this obvious? Whatever...

Normal service (active SL2s) will be resumed when i have got the errant tweeter and other issues, sorted. Hopefully soon.

Always good to hear of someone getting n-Satisfaction. Thanks Ken. I love these stories of supposed overkill systems on the little wonders.

I remember hearing a 552/200/ Nsats combination and really enjoying it Ken, I can imagine with a 500 its even better!

N-sats are surprisingly good on such a system, as I once discovered at the Top audio Show in Milan after the SL2s arrived there damaged beyond on-site repair.

i ran 552/250/nSats, uh, about 10 years ago -- the nSats were on their floor stands then. and i was astonished how good they sounded then.

but the 500 seems to be  taking them a musical step further. Seems they take on a with "wild abandon" characteristic -- as if the musicians were enjoying themselves so much they didn't have a care in the world...  I guess you can almost say the SL2s bring a bit of "order" and "discipline" to the proceedings ???...  Hmmm...

I ran mine with a 300 and they liked that up 'em. A fun speaker that unfortunately was considered more of an AV component as it formed part of the n-System (with n-Vi). Nicely made too.

That reminds me that it'll soon be time to retrieve my poor N-Sats from a long hibernation in the loft for a second system I've been planning. No chance of them seeing a 500, but this makes me wonder just how much power they really need to make them sing - I was thinking more of an Atom!

NAP S1 !!! Kidding of course! (though this ridiculous suggestion arouses my curiosity ... :-) )

The NAP500 (DR) seems to bring something special out of them -- but i know for sure that they still work extremely well even with lower Naim amplification.

You say that, I enjoyed the NAPS1 driving a pair of Neat IOTA Alpha speakers and a pair of PMC twenty5.21 speakers... the Neats really sounded rather special especially in the upper mids and treble.

Hmmmmm, seems like I need to start buying some lottery tickets!

I run pmc 20.21 on full 500 system they sound great....

It's a good job Max has gone dormant, or is busy playing with his teddy.

lucky you Simon -- i haven't heard the NAP S1 before -- i sense it would simply be 'naughty' to drive nSats with such a beast but hey -- who knows? i'd have said that about NAP500 before i tried it...

I heard the Neat Iota Alpha speakers earlier this year & was really taken back on what such a small box was capable of.  The ribbon treble unit was very smooth & impressively impressive with a clarity & instrument positioning I had not heard before,  Mid down to bass was also outstanding, dynamic & realistic all in spades.  Soundstage - considering such a little box - was massive,  it projected well higher than its knee high box,  they seemed to be six foot tall.  They are on my short list of speakers to consider for a future room change.   The only downside (my OCD) is in the detail in the finish,  I've never been that impressed with Neat.

Funny enough Neat seem  to crop up on a few dealers sites with slight factory seconds offered from time to time, which I thought seemed odd to let out sub standard finishes on your product. Have not seen other brands do that?

Reading this thread reminds me that, being old school, we spend far too much on 'speakers and usually too little on the front end. I know there are loads of source first vs balanced system threads so no wish to start a new debate. However, just saying....

good point Stuart -- in fact a hifi friend made the same point in email communication today.

As it happens -- i still have to secure the studs on the wall brackets to the wall -- so i expect that there is still some additional performance to come when i do this.

I'm presently waiting for a pair of nSats to arrive from southern Ontario. They should be here on Sept. 26, and after reading a lot of threads on the little guys I can hardly wait. I'm going to be using them with an LP12/52/250/Fraim/Rel S3 setup in a near field arrangement. I am using es-14s right now, and it should be interesting to compare the two presentations. I really love the Epos, but a nice deal came up on the nSats and I couldn't resist. Should be interesting...

Invisible stands - very neat Ken

I use two pair of Sats at the moment. The former has been bought from me new in 2010 and served me up  up to the SL2 arrival at end of 2013.  They are now residing into this large basement room along my winning Nait XS  ( a DVD5 will join these soon)  i confess this is probably one of the systems i like more. Working with so much space around, they have never sounded so good.

I also tryed UnitLite here, (now into the other room) with equally good result. They have a freshness, a clarity, speed a ridicolous  sense of scale (in this context) relly really hard to beat.

The other pair into the other room, is a recent acquisition from our fellow member Max B. driven by UnitiLite

Regards

Roberto

I almost bought those as a back-up pair...ended up getting a nice, preloved NAP200 instead.
