Planar 6 quandary

Posted by: Smithfire on 02 August 2017

Looks like I chose the wrong time to decide to buy a rp6!....none left in stock and the new planar 6 on the sleves in a week or 2. The new planar 6 has been designed around the aria mc cart, but I have learnt that my nait 3 is not the best when handling mc carts!. So should I buy the new planar 6 and put a good mm cart in and risk a poorly matched combo or try and find a second hand rp6 on the bay?....gulp!

Wait for the new P6 - based on Rega's past form, it will be better than the RP6.

I can't see why a decent MM cart shouldn't work, either. Not personally keen on Rega's cheaper ones, but the Exact is decent and has the advantage of being easy to fit and no VTA issues.

The Rega Aria is a phono stage, adjustable to both MC and MM carts.

I'd wouldn't get overly concerned with designer's intent, rather how a particular piece of gear performs in your room. This might be a good opportunity for you to grab a s/h RP6 for a good price. It's a great performer.

I think it was a simple spelling mistake - the new Ania is their £500 MC. The MMs will work fine with the new deck. It is likely to be better than the current one but if that doesn't matter dealers will surely be selling old stock at good prices. It's entirely up to you. Pay more for the new deck, or save on the old one.

Thanks Hungryhalibut. You're bang on the money. Cant seem to track any rp6 stock anywhere though!.

I can see one of the two big UK chain dealers has 2 clearance ones available at the moment, I'm not sure if I can say which one, but look at the websites of the obvious big ones.

Will check. Thanks.

In the US the price sheet lists the RP6 with the new MC or the Exact MM. I think you can get it fitted either way.

Just ordered a planar 6 with mm exact cart. Seems like the best compromise!

not sure where you got this statement from.  I had a nait 3 for years with the naim mc board NA523S fitted-had no problems at all.

If you have the correct board fitted then you should have no problems with the new RP6 and arai mc cartridge

Apparently its all down to the particular boards and how low your output is.

The NAIT 3 was never really recommended by Naim with MC boards mainly because performance of the boards could be somewhat impaired by such close proximity to the transformer.  There was a special mu-metal kit that could be fitted for anyone who insisted on using MC boards, but it wasn't ideal.
