Naim Uniti Atom without wifi
Posted by: Imis on 03 August 2017
Hi,
I am considering buying an atom, but I do not have a wireless lan. Will I be able to use the Atom with Internet only from cable? Do I have to use my smartphone/tablet to control the Atom?
Regards
Christoffer
To control the Atom using your smartphone / tablet you need a WiFi access point. If you already have internet access, this is very easily arranged.
Thanks for answer, but the case is that I do not want WiFi in my house. Will I be able to use the atom with just the remote and internet through cable?
Hi Christoffer,
I can't be absolutely certain as I don't use an Atom (I use a 272), but I believe you'll be able to do everything with the remote and the front display on the Atom.
This is definitely the case for all the older series of streamers. I'd be exceptionally surprised if Naim removed this ability from the new Uniti series.
BTW, if you're worried about EM effects of WiFi, don't use Ethernet 'Power Line Adapters', they can emit even higher EM field strengths.
Could the Atom be controlled using a desk top client on a wired computer/laptop? I know I can do this using n-Serve for my HDX player.
Using these products without the Naim app is a painful experience. If you won't get the wifi to enable you to use the app, I would not buy an Atom.
I believe basic DLNA functions can be controlled by some applications (Kinksy, Bubble UPnP, etc) but the Naim specific functions won't be available.
However I can't test this.

Yes all the above is correct; you get basic one level control for streaming from NAS but none of the Naim app specific functions such as now playing screen & any of the touch screen effects. You don't get any of the Naim players embedded features such as iRadio, USB, Tidal etc..
I use a Windoze 10 laptop running an Android emulator called 'Nox'. And run the NAIM App in Nox to control my UnitiQute. Works prefect.
Actually you could probably use it without any WiFi at all and still use an iPad (and probably an Android tablet alternatively) to control it.
An iPad can be connected to a wired network using a combination of the Lightning to USB3 "camera connection kit" and the Apple USB Ethernet adaptor. You can probably do similar with Android tablets using an on the go USB cable and suitable USB Ethernet adaptor.
No idea if this would cause any issues with the Naim App; but it should work.
Though I would recommend a tin hat and getting a wireless access point!
I can connect to my Qute using the Linn Kinsky program running on an iMac (presumably it is also availabe for windoze?) Its not the most user friendly approach, but it should work with the Atom.
What is it about WiFi that you wish to avoid? The Atom will work without it, using the remote, but for full control of all it's features, you really want the Naim app on a phone/tablet.
Fries yer brain.
D'yer wont fries wiv yer fried brain?

I have an Atom, whilst the remote allows some functions, you need the app on a Phone/Tablet to make the Atom work.
I would take a trip to your local Naim dealer and have an audition, then try and use the Atom with just the remote.
As for other suggestions about using a client to host the Naim app - I have never experainced this or had the need to try.
Clearly you will have to wear your tin hat and Faraday suit to limit the exposure to wifi signals whilst auditioning

Less frying than mobile phones or DECT and possibly less than a less than ideally shielded microwave you might have... and the Naim remote control on the new Uniti series I understand uses Zigbee which is wireless that coresides with 802.11 based wifi on the 2.4GHz ISM band
Odd thread is odd.

No - the Atom cannot be controlled by the Desktop Client App and that is only for HDX / UnitiServe and NS0x servers.

Hi,
Your control of the Atom will be very restricted if you are unable to use the Naim app - you will not be able to browse UPnP or TIDAL / Spotify etc.

he can always connect a cd player
