Atom + Mu-so multi room problems

Posted by: Hemmendorff on 09 August 2017

So, after 9 months of waiting i finally recieved my pre-ordered Naim Uniti Atom. Setup has been fine and all network, updates and services seem to be in place.

However something is weird about the multiroom functionality when i'm trying to pair it with my Mu-so. Using the naim app on my iphone, both devices show up as "rooms" in the app start page. But when i'm playing from spotify/radio/etc, and click the little symbol beside the volume bar, i can't find the Mu-so. However if i go out to the Rooms page in the app and select the Mu-so as the active device, i can play on the Mu-so AND find the Atom in the multiroom menu.
To try to clarify:
- The app finds both devices when looking in the Rooms screen
- When the mu-so is the active device, the Atom pops up in the multiroom menu
- When the Atom is the active device, it cannot find the Mu-so in the multiroom menu

But yeah, i CAN play on the mu-so and select the Atom as an additional speaker in the multiroom menu. But it's still wonky. It usually doesn't work directly (it says 'Room Atom did not respond') but on the second attempt it usually works.  Then they're playing together nicely but after 1 minute or so the Atom just shuts off. I haven't timed it but it's very consistent, it loses the connection every time and it's always after around 1 minute of multiroom playing.

So, any advice? Both machines are running the latest firmware, have been restarted numerous times and are on the same wifi.

Would love to have this resolved since the multiroom possibility were key when going with naim's streaming stuff in the first place.

Thanks!

I think from other threads that multiroom for Atom needs a firmware update from NAim tbd. Suggest you email Naim

The Muso is not yet ready for multiroom and will be able once Naim release a firmware update for it.

It is the Atom awaiting multiroom functionality, not the Mu-so.

I Maybe phrased the answer poorly. The Atom doesn't require a firmware update. The Muso needs the update to work with the Atom, I'm in the Beta group and own an Atom and have Multiroom working.

Thank you! Guess i'll have to wait for an update.

Another (less severe) multi-room bug is related to "mute": on starting multiroom, when the remote room is muted, the app does not indicate same but toggling mute on app (ie turning the slave room mute on then back off) resets status correctly and both master and slave units play. Not sure if this relates to your issue with Atom / MuSo (as I'm using Super / Qute) but I'm sure Naim support would like to know if the two are related.

Haven't experienced that i think since i don't really use mute.

But something weird is going on when using multiroom with the Mu-so as "master". Upon connecting the Atom is sometimes shown in the app on zero volume, allthough it's clearly playing at it's previous volume. And sometimes it's shown with the right volume but does not play at all, and you'll have to manually lower the volume (going up doesnt work for whatever reason) for it to wake up.

I'm guessing these are all related to the Mu-so running an older multiroom protocol than the Atom though so will hopefully be resolved with the firmware update people have mentioned above.

Good strategy, for sure best to have the two units on same version when available. I had seen the volume "out of sync" issue you mention in early beta testing some while ago; resolved on update. This is likely all being fixed at Naim right now, their development team is making steady progress to implement more and fix things as the get found. Best wishes.

Is the On/Off separate to Mute on the Atom and Muso?  I have a Qute (which doesn't have an on/off function as such other than the hardware power switch on the rear)  and am considering getting a Muso for another room.

I can speak for the Qb and I expect the muso is the same.

On the Qb you can put it into standby by tapping the power icon on the volume knob or by selecting standby in the settings menu in the app. You can also mute it from the app. I haven't noticed a way of muting it from the unit itself other than turning the volume down of course, which is very easy to do.

There is no power off switch as such. The units are intended to be left in standby, from which condition they can be woken by the app (or from the unit itself of course).

There is a mute or pause function you just press in the middle of the wheel on the mu-so. It will mute radio, but pause the other sources.

That is a pause function on radio too as radio is streamed. But would it mute, for example, something going into the muso via analogue? I don't think so?

With respect to Atom and muso multiroom problems, see the new uniti progress update from Naim in Hifu corner, which gives an update on this issue.
