Supernait 2.
Posted by: tonycurran1 on 10 August 2017
my supernait 2 all of a sudden has stopped working on its left channel
I have tried removing HC and put jumper back in
tried a reset
and tested all the leads but still no luck.
How many source components? Is it a broken interconnect?
Regards,
Lindsay
Hi not working on any source
I have changed all interconnects.
I have also swapped the speaker connection around and its deffo the SN2.
And the bias is still centred?
Have you tried
1 Using different inputs.
2 Using a different source component.
3 Swapping speaker leads (to rule out speaker / speaker cable faults).

Does the left channel work through the HP-out? If so are the volume and balance controls working via HP?
Either way, a service trip seems inevitable. You said you removed the HC and have the SN2 link-plug (jumper) in place and changed ICs. Little else to contemplate is there?
It may be the link plug. Switch off. Remove and refit the link plug. Switch back on.
- Hi thanks for all your great replies
- took the SN back to my dealer this morning
- and ended up coming away with a ex dem 282 and 250dr
- knew I should not have stopped for a tea
- but they know me well so I can pay off the difference over 6.months
- That's one way to fix it
that's what I call a Win-win outcome. Everyone happy

Any major difference between the SN2 and 282/250DR. I presume you have a Hicap (and NAPSC) connected to the amps.
Hi yes I had a HC already and the 282 comes with the Naspc
a lot more power to drive my B&W 804
i will have a good listen tonight.

Those pesky dealers eh!
Will be interested to know your thoughts
Nice one Tony but a very expensive left channel fix
Also very interested in your opinion in the differences between SN2 and your current new toys.
ive been running a SN2 for almost 2 years now and have to admit I absolutely love what it does. If I wanted to change my amplification I would probably demo you're new combo.
Give it a good thrashing and please report back!
Oh, question for 282 owners, do you always have to use the napsc no matter what power supply option you choose?
thanks folks.

Yes. It powers the control section and won't work without one.

Yes, it's mandatory for 282 operation..
Hi Antond yes I was very pleased with the supernait 2 when using it with MA silver 8
but I got the B&W 804d a few weeks ago I knew I would have to get a 250 dr as they need the current to make them sing
the 282 was a ex dem that my dealer was holding for me
i have the NDS with 555 unity core so one more upgrade later this year will be to replace the Hi cap with a Supercap and that will be as far as I will go ( as long as I stay away from my lovely dealer)
That's an impressive setup you've built.
My dealer highly commends your new speakers.
The rest of your kit too. Must produce wonderful music.
Ran my setup for 11 hours straight today and enjoyed every minute.
Do you now have a very different sound or is it similar?
thanks.

Interesting about the sense of power. The SN2 and 250 both have 400 VA transformers. Using the SN2 with a HC would seem to free-up power to the amp.

Yes but the 250 is regulated and the sn2 is not.
Question regarding the possible diffrance between Supernait 2 and Nait 5i2.
A friend wrote in one of the HiFI forums the following:
"Looking at these two amplifiers in quantitative terms, the NAIT 5i-2 appears to offer 50 WRMS into 8 ohms, while the SUPERNAIT 2 appears to offer 80 WRMS into 8 ohms (130 watts per channel into 4 ohms). From this simple assessment, the SUPERNAIT 2 will be able to drive a set of speakers to higher sound pressure levels before clipping occurs. How much of a bearing this difference in power output has on sound quality will depend on the maximum loudness level that will be used. I would expect that there wouldn't be any audible difference between these two amplifiers if they were both played at a power output level of 45 WRMS into 8 ohms".
The Speakers are : Harbeth 7E3.
What is your opinion on this matter ?
I liked the sound of the Naim 5i 2 driving my ATCs... it really was a very bouncy and enjoyable presentation, perhaps just a smidgen soft for my tastes..
What I would say regarding the quote you reference... amp power with speaker is not all about loudness level you listen too, in fact I would say in domestic settings it has little to do with that... it's about control, and that was probably why there was softness with 5i 2 on my ATCs as it it might have benefitted with some more control/power for those speakers if wanting a crisper tighter sound.
Simon, the situation is quite the reverse. Amp power is just about loudness; amp quality is about how well it controls the speakers.
Better quality amps are usually more powerful, but this is not always the case.
Compare a NAP300DR (90W) to some of the cheaper Japanese amps that are 100W+ and you can easily see the point (for instance the Yamaha AS701 is 100W but costs less than £500, or the Onkyo A-9070 which is 140W for <£800); at their price points, they may be thought of as OK, but they just won't compete with a NAP300DR.
