I'll play. One per post?
Miles of Aisles ... Joni, is right up there. Try it on vinyl.

I'm happy to see you caught the notion of "best" as a superlative Skip .
We'll see how many post multiple albums as their best ....
My best is Nirvana Live at Reading. A raw energy captured both from the band and audience that makes for an especially musical and magical performance.
Live Dead - Grateful Dead of course!

Try Joni's album 'Shadows and Light' for a superb live recording of what I consider to be her best period. Pastorius, Metheny, Mays, Brecker, Allias too - not a bad backing band!
Jerry Garcia Band, Live at Keane College
The live album of the 1969 Floydian double Ummagumma. Simply brilliant.

I have "Shadows and Light" on vinyl, too. I will clean it and play it this weekend. Thanks for the tip.

On a music site, when you ask for the best, you usually get the five best or the ten best. I have heard of the best, but never the one best. At least not on a music site. I grew up reading Rolling Stone, Downbeat, and Playboy where the best was a list. Perhaps we should say the better. As in "The better restaurants of Chelsea." Instead of the "8 Best..."
Horowitz in Moscow. Electric!
Dire Straits - Alchemy (1983). A masterclass in how to extend 'normal' rock songs to 10 minutes and beyond without them getting dull for a moment. Although I knew Brothers in Arms well, when I first listened to Alchemy I was hearing those songs for the first time. When I later listened to the original versions on Love Over Gold etc., I was mightily disappointed. To my ears, the live versions are still the best.

Yessongs. Not a great recording but utterly superb given that Alan White had just joined up at the last minute after Bruford left. Every song betters the studio versions for energy. Grew up listening to this on headphones late into the night rather than revising for my O levels....

I haven't been through this whole thread, but if this has been already included (and I can easily imagine it might) then sorry for the redundancy.
for me these are my choices
The Who live in Leeds
Neil Young Un plugged
Nivarana MTV Unpugged
Supertramp Paris
Fleetwood Mac - The Dance
but for me the album which just takes the top place is Roger Waters The Wall Live - stunning recording
John Coltrane Live at the Village Vanguard 1961.
Mother's Finest Live.
BB
Townes van Zandt - Live at the Old Quarter

can't think of one that's head and shoulders above the rest -- so how about:
Ahmad Jamal -- At the Pershing
Who -- Live at Leeds
Sam Cooke -- Live at the Harlem Square Club
Cure -- Show
Sinatra at the Sands is pretty good, too!
James Brown - Live at the Apollo
Nick Cave - Live at the Royal Albert Hall
Neil Young - Live at Massey Hall 1971, Live Rust
Velvet Underground - The Quine Tapes
One more:
Art Ensemble of Chicago - The Complete Live in Japan
Alot of what has been mentioned would be in my 'top' list but the one I listen to most often is probably Marianne Faithfull - Blazing Away
Beautiful recording from a 1989 concert at St. Anne's Cathedral, Brooklyn
She is in top form - gravelly voice and all. The songs, arrangements and band are absolutely stellar. Play loud !!
Dr Feelgood - Stupidity
Allmans - Fillmore East
Van Morrison - Too Late
Thin Lizzy- Live and Dangerous
Rory Gallagher - Irish Tour
The Who -Live at Leeds
