Corrupt Track Listings on App
Posted by: Harry0 on 14 August 2017
My music is stored on a Seagate NAS drive, played through a UnitiLite and "controlled" through my Ipad or Android apps. I have been struggling for a while with some variations between the tracks shown on the NAS drive and those shown on the app. For example, some album listings on the app have imported tracks from other albums. When this happens, the display within the app has changed from a simple listing of the tracks to one where the tracks show the (sometimes incorrect) album cover. I have re-ripped the CDs and updated the apps with no success. Would anyone be able to advise, please? To be honest, I'm not sure whether it is a WiFi problem (slow at 6mbps) or something else. Not all albums are affected in this way. Thank you
You need to correct your metadata. What the files are called and what the metadata says the track is called are not the same. Something like dbpoweramp is what you need. Install it and then if you right click on the track you can edit the metadata, including album art.
Grateful for your reply. I forgot to say that I had only ever used dbpoweramp- the correct album art appears during the rip and,as far as I can see, the metadata is ok. Despite this, and in one case at least, the album cover relating to the erroneous track (if you see what I mean) seems to have displaced the correct cover as shown on the app. But I'll try reripping both albums again. Thanks
I wouldn't try re-ripping. If there is an issue with the metadata the same thing is likely to happen again. Just look at the metadata for a track that the app is showing incorrectly and see what the embedded data is saying.
I will, thank you. I must admit that I couldn't really see that re-ripping would solve it and, on reflection, I suppose that it must be an element of incorrect metadata that causes the corruption - if it was otherwise then more/all albums would be affected.
Just a follow up. I used Perfect Tunes to have a look at the files and lo! there were lots of apparent duplications - some of which were in M4A format (goodness knows how) so I have carried out a purification exercise and am more confident that this will resolve the issue. Anyway, HH, you have probably saved me lots of time in needless re-ripping and I am very grateful for your wisdom.
What server are you using? As you use dbPoweramp, I'm guessing maybe Asset, rather than some flaky thing bundled with your NAS? Anyway, it looks from your last post like you have identified the problem, hopefully. You may find it helps to rescan your music library, then empty the UPnP and image cache on the app, and restart everything.
The server is Seagate/Personal Cloud but I did have the same problem with it's predecessor (WD/Twonky) before it gave up on me. Maybe that has been part of the problem which seems to have got worse but I will carry out the cleaning up and resetting you suggest. Fingers crossed! Thank you very much for this.
I'm so pleased that's helped. If you can run Asset, I'd recommend it as a great upnp server; solid and reliable and easy to configure to let you search as you want.
Thank you. I hadn't really thought of that before but I will look into Asset. Silly question-would that simply replace the existing NAS drive, please?
Asset is simply the server software - it still needs to live somewhere, be it a nas or a computer. You need to look at the Asset website (Google db poweramp) and that will say what can be used. For what it's worth, I use a Qnap, which is one of the best makes. Synology don't (readily) run Asset.
I think it would be worth considering a better NAS: QNAP, Synology, and Netgear Readynas are tried and tested options, as are Asset or Minimserver UPnP servers to run on them. You may be able to use your existing NAS as a backup device.
That's really helpful advice to a novice like me so thank you both Hungry Halibut and Chrissu. Am now looking at the procurement of a better NAS and server.....
.... well it seems that Asset is the server to go for and I take your points about QNAP being a better drive. All QNAPs are Assets-compatible so the next problem is which one and does it really matter? I am thinking about the QNAP TS253A, 4GB one (about £300) for no other reason that it looks like a mid range one but does that sound reasonable to you? If yes then I'll just go for it but if not and I am eg looking at the wrong price range then it's better to know now. On the other hand, if I am asking for too much info then I would quite understand. Thanks
I'm sure the QNAP you mention would work well. Now is obviously the time to consider how many drives you need, and what size - as downloads become an increasingly widespread alternative to CDs and are often in a hi-res format with larger file sizes. Western Digital Red drives are a tried and tested choice for such a NAS, so probably worth choosing these. Be prepared for a bit of head scratching when you set it up - if you get stuck, a phonecall to Naim support is usually the best option.
We have a 253A and it's fine. Nice and speedy, and has a button on the front to press to do a backup to a USB drive. We got ours from ebuyer with 3TB WD red drives installed, which can be a bit cheaper than buying them separately.
These last two replies are really great and helpful. I will get on and do it now. Sorry to be a pain and asking so many questions and many thanks for your advice over the last few days
