It's like the musicians are in the room!

How many times do we hear that when people make an upgrade? Of course I know what they are getting at - things are more involving and 'real'. I had an interesting experience yesterday when my son asked if his band could practice. They have done it before but just playing unamplified, but when we returned from the beach we found them in full flight with the drums and amps. What a sound! No Hifi I've ever heard comes anywhere close in capturing the dynamics and sheer energy. Any Hifi is really just a pale facsimile of the real thing, with sound fiddled about in the studio, compressed and then reproduced by the system. I'm currently listening to chamber music, and that does sound remarkably like the real thing, but a rock band, no. Of course, listening to rock music on the system is great, and highly enjoyable. I've been to many concerts over the years and enjoyed them immensely, but it's the first time I've had a band in my house. And here they are...

Another try to post socks on this forum, HH?

Nothing beats live music! Look forward to see a string quartet in your room (given that you seem to listen this often) ...

You see the socks but not the 100W Orange bass amp and a similarly powerful guitar amp out of shot.... I like the idea of a string quartet though!

I had similar a few years too many years ago.     It wasn't so much like the musicians are in the room,  but I wish they were not in the room.     My son went off to form a soul band called Out to Lunch & oblivion,  others went to eventually start a band called Supergrass,  I often wonder what happened to them

You are quite right, of course, no system is truly like having a live band in the room, but would you really want that? So much recorded music is studio produced, and I'm not sure it's even intended to sound like a live performance, and it was never really that to start with. Live music is great, but sometimes you just want to relax on the sofa, and a live rock band would be way too intense.

The closest to a live experience I've heard was an NDS/Statement system, playing some pretty loud, complex music, no doubt chosen to show off it's talents. It was a vert impressive setup, but no way would I want that in my house either. To be fair, the monster Focal speakers used were probably not helping.

you are correct with lesser systems but not so with active DBLs

I have a Steinway grand piano in the next room. and yes I have the studio grade equipment to record it with, and then playback via the big naim system. It can happily handle the transient  requirement

I fully understand what HH means - I'm in a rehearsal studio with my band several times a week.
Nothing comes close to the sound during rehearsals.

Even a live band (as heard from FOH speakers) will already be compressed / gated / reverbed etc etc.

Mike B,

You son may not have achieved the money and fame of Supergrass but I for one much prefer the name of Out to Lunch & Oblivion.

Image result for avantgarde trio

You want dynamics and energy, then you need horns!  Avantgarde Trios plus 6 horn-loaded active subs will certainly do the trick.  Haven't heard such a system for a while but demos in Frankfurt and Munich always ended with a round of applause.   Horn loaded drivers play into a huge acoustic impedence so can by quite small and don't need to move very much to produce high SPLs. A Naim Nait would have more than enough power to drive this system to concert level SPLs in a very large room, while sounding completely natural and unstrained

I see no issue with embracing both the real event experience and the experience of enjoying the event in my home, I think there is room for both experiences which appeal to two types of enthusiasts, but we’re all music enthusiasts at the end of the day. Is there anything wrong with saying that I, for example, don’t like the sound of most auditoriums, I don’t like the crowds, the bad parking and the poor sound (I tend to listen to mostly amplified music), yet I still consider myself a music lover, I just happen to prefer to listen at home to a finely tuned system setup for me. I think the world has room for more than one way of enjoying music, as long as we take the time to actually enjoy the music.

One thing with rock guitar is that sometimes you have to crank your amp to get the tubes cooking - that's when the sound really gets its character. Difficult to recreate that with recorded music I think. You also don't get the spontaneous dynamic shifts between instruments etc. Got a gig tomorrow night, small cramped venue, but great atmosphere and always a great audience - can't wait.

We were once listening to Quadrophenia and I commented that the system was so good it was like Keith Moon was in the room and Mrs Strat said "Oh my God - does that mean the TV will soon go hurling through the window?"!!!!

I don't have Jon Honeyball's System, and can't pluck a guitar like Adam.

But I have been to Concerts, and enjoyable they were, but when I came home and fired up the Briks, I was Good!

Now, the quaint Night Club Live Entertainment, that's really nice!

The Briks can't compare to that, but pretty close, after a couple of Martinis!

Oh - you'd be surprised how much instruments and amps / effects cost.

Very true. Hifi upgrade funds wiped out 4 years ago when I started gigging again, been saving back up again since then. New guitars, amps, it gets addictive like Hifi upgrades. Great fun though. Could think of worse things to spend money on.

So much for new guitars, but things get very serious indeed when you start considering secondhand (vintage) instruments! I'm sure it's really just conspicuous consumption, but is an original 'burst Les Paul from 1958-1960 really worth six figures? And don't get me started on the absurdity of 'relic' instruments!

True but some people still pay these prices. We had best be careful or will be sent to padded cell.

Just had a couple of hours serious listening to my system - yes not the same as live- but sounds bloody fantastic!

"bloody" sounds good!

Looks like a lot of fun. Are they any good? Probably not the best question to ask dad - my dad used to say we were crap when he heard us but what did he know?! We could have been Morrissey and Johnny Marr and he would have said the same thing. Do they attempt to write their own material?

The closest I've heard a hifi speaker sound like a real guitar amp, bass amp, and drums is atc scm40a.

My mates play in a pretty decent band and I've had them jam at home a few times, almost impossible for a to replicate the live sound imo even though they use rubbish cables
