It's like the musicians are in the room!

How many times do we hear that when people make an upgrade? Of course I know what they are getting at - things are more involving and 'real'. I had an interesting experience yesterday when my son asked if his band could practice. They have done it before but just playing unamplified, but when we returned from the beach we found them in full flight with the drums and amps. What a sound! No Hifi I've ever heard comes anywhere close in capturing the dynamics and sheer energy. Any Hifi is really just a pale facsimile of the real thing, with sound fiddled about in the studio, compressed and then reproduced by the system. I'm currently listening to chamber music, and that does sound remarkably like the real thing, but a rock band, no. Of course, listening to rock music on the system is great, and highly enjoyable. I've been to many concerts over the years and enjoyed them immensely, but it's the first time I've had a band in my house. And here they are...

Looks like a lot of fun. Are they any good? Probably not the best question to ask dad - my dad used to say we were crap when he heard us but what did he know?! We could have been Morrissey and Johnny Marr and he would have said the same thing. Do they attempt to write their own material?

The closest I've heard a hifi speaker sound like a real guitar amp, bass amp, and drums is atc scm40a.

Yes, they are very good and have won various youth competitions, and have played in a couple of venues in Portsmouth with a full professional sound system. They hadn't played for a year because our Henry has been at Uni, so it's now very much a fun thing. But that said, to hear them in full flight is really something - the sheer exuberance is something you just can't get from a recording.

It is great that youngsters are still making good music and having fun doing so.

Some great bands have emerged from bedrooms and garages. If there's one export that will remain strong whatever Brexit brings it will be music made in Britain.

I guess the objective for Naim and the like is to reproduce live acoustic music so you won't be able to tell the difference. Who knows, perhaps one day this might be achieved.

Live music - I've long suspected that final gap from the hi-fi to live music was due to source shortcomings.

Vertere say it is the cables....

and then I heard Chord Dave playing DSD files through 552DR/300DR with Sonus Faber Futura speakers (Superlumina full loom) - and there is was - live music !!!! it was amazing, the best hi-fi I ever heard ever in my life.

Although It wasn't hi-fi anymore, just real music.

Anyway back to reality. I am at 282/250DR level.

I've been lucky to see Metallica live, and play the black album on Vinyl - honestly the Naim kit does capture the energy of the band very well. Add some fancy wires - in my case a Vertere DFI RCA to DIN and Pulse B DIN/XLR (for Nap 250) and - I enjoy the songs as much as I did on the live show ! Have to say that Dynaudio speakers have long been known for capturing the energy of a live rock show, so maybe it's the Naim/Dynaudio combination too.

Hmm, I'm not convinced. I wouldn't see Metallica is you paid me, but I've never heard a system that could portray the sheer energy of a live rock gig, and I've been to some good ones. Which is not to say that music at home is not great, it's just different. I remember seeing Theatre of Hate at the Wedgewood Rooms - fantastic sound that pinned you to the wall, but I wouldn't want it at home. Whereas I've been to the Village Vanguard, and a well recorded live album from there does sound pretty much like the real thing.

I've been a shed load of concerts, been going since I was 17 and I still go to probably a dozen a year, and I've watched lots of groups in lots of different venues, including most rock bands  and I have never heard any system anywhere that comes remotely close to a rock band in full flow at a gig.  I've heard some fine systems and I like listening to music at home but you can't reproduce a rock concert in your living room imho.  I often listen to a gig and try to work out what is different from the sound I get at home and it's difficult to place but just the sheer energy and impact of the music stands out at a gig

Of course you don't get the chest pounding bass, bit I find Metallica at home just as engaging as the live concert I attended

I dont like very high volumes you get at concerts anyway
