Triggered by a performance of one of his songs at a gig I've just got back from, Stephen Foster.  Oh Susanna, Camptown Races, Jeanie with the light brown hair, Hard Topimes Come Again No More, Swanee River...

Never read such a hackneyed and cliche ridden dismissal of a great songwriter, anyone who's followed Costellos career will struggle to recognise him from your assessment of his talent.

Check out Trust, Imperial Bedroom and This years model and you'll see what a shallow lazy comment this was.

Only my opinion.

I presume that comment is aimed at me, Unc. I really can't be bothered to follow Costello's career - life's too short, after all - but last time I heard Trust, Imperial Bedroom and TYM, they were shit, and I see no reason to alter that assessment, unless they have magically less rubbish over the intervening years.

They're OK if you're a fan of adenoidal pap posing as something edgier, executed by a chancer who fancies himself as Blighty's Dylan, accompanied by fingernails-on-the-blackboard keys and the worst rhythm section this side of U2; but not for me I'm afraid.

Anyway, you are Elvis' mum and I claim my £5. I accept PayPal.
