Nac 72 Question
Posted by: mikeybaby on 19 August 2017
My 72 has a decal showing the various inputs and outputs on the rear panel with serial number on the bottom right corner on the decal. All other 72s that I have owned or seen have that information printed right on the metal casing with the serial no. in the upper right corner. The serial no is 56038 (1989 run). Has this 72 been converted?
Can you post some pirctures? Some people here might be able to help you or better still get in touch with Naim Service Dept and, if it was serviced by them, they'll probably have records of the work they carried out.
Not sure how.
I have a NAP 110 converted to a 140 by Naim some years ago the serial number is top right hand side looking at rear & is hand written in blue ink/pen - if that helps.
Too complicated to post photos here. tx
Converted to what ??!

Was this 72 a 62 at one time? It is not the same as other 72s.
As far as I know, the 72 was never anything else, and no conversions were ever done. Have you asked Naim yet, as speculation won't find the answer?
I will check with Naim HQ. Its very strange though because I dont see any other 72s that look like this.
Mikeybaby. It's really simple to post pics. See the FAQ thread on how to do it. All you need is to host the image somewhere like imgur, flikr etc..
FWIW, you couldn't convert a NAC62 to a NAC72. However, I'd be curious to see it.
Ok I will follow the thread and post some pics.Stay tuned.Thank you
If I may be so bold...
The 72 was my first Naim preamp, but for the life of me I cannot recall where the S/N was...
This is how my previous 72 looked. Why the variation? Both are early 72s.
I suspect it's one that was put together in New Zealand.
But I could be wrong of course.
I think the 72 was the greatest of all of the older preamps.
Have you seen an example of one that was assembled there?
No, I have not seen one, but here in Australia we see some differences and the NZ explanation and a few past dealers who's own opinions were a little different to Naim's often explain the differences.
The important thing is that the interior is correct. Even the wire ties can make a difference. The rust on the screws is interesting, though.
I suppose you are aware that there are people that sell non genuine front panels etc, to help rejuvenate the older models?
No... I had no idea that there were clones so accurate. So would you say the inside looks correct? I took out the phono boards the 328s and replaced the 729s with 324s. I like the sound better.
I spy SBLs Mikeybaby.....

Thanks for posting the picture - the NAC72 with the smaller rear label is a very early one. If you contact Naim with the serial number then they can give you the factory history for the unit.
AFAIK there were no NAC72s built in NZ. The NZ assembled units were the NAC225 and NAP125.
Hmm...Please note the serial no. in photo 3. It is an early model as well. Yet no decal..very odd.
It's not odd at all. Yours, and the similar one in the picture, are 66xxx. The one with the serial number at the top right is 57xxx. They are about three months apart, which indicates that the rear panels were changed in that three month period. You could always ask Naim to double check if you are worried, but I'd suggest it's a non-issue.
The earliest NAC72 rear labels were basically just a quick update to those that were on the preceding NAC32.5 (take a look at a late NAc32.5 and you'll see) - don't forget that the NAC72 was basically just a development from the NAC32.5. It was something of an interim solution and was soon replaced by a full rear stick on panel as shown in the lower picture.
When you first described it I thought it might something quite different. Ah well, at least it puts your mind at rest...
Excellent! Thanks Everyone.
