Nac 72 Question

Posted by: mikeybaby on 19 August 2017

My 72 has a decal showing the various inputs and outputs on the rear panel with serial number on the bottom right corner on the decal. All other 72s that I have owned or seen have that information printed right on the metal casing with the serial no. in the upper right corner. The serial no is 56038 (1989 run). Has this 72 been converted?

Just looked at rear of my CB NAC62 circa 1988 the serial number plate looks exactly the same, except for the number

Question Richard. So if the early run of the 72 is just a continuation of the 32.5 why the difference in sound? 72 with 324 cards in place of the 729s  is fuller and smoother with more punch--the 32.5 seems to have a slightly wider soundstage with more treble.

The NAC72 introduced the time aligned circuitry with the 729 boards.  It also lost the mono switch of the NAC32.5, which to my mind was something of a backward step for anyone still interested in vinyl replay.

All else being the same, any differences will come down to sample variation (higher back then than now, but big improvements made from '88 onwards), age, need of servicing etc..
