Hi res music to my superuniti

Posted by: Skinnypuppy71 on 23 August 2017

Hi guy's.......I've recently moved on to the superuniti from a nait xs /Cd5i Italic and various other bits n bobs....I have been ripping my cd's and storing them on a synology ds216j 6tb nas via plex server which is all working pretty well but the other day I thought I'd try some hi res music and downloaded a album from hd tracks and another from qobuuz...both 24/96 khz all seems well until I play them through the SU.....the streaming  info says it's only still the same as my ripped cd's at 44.1 khz..I managed to up it a little by casting the album from my pc to the SU...then it's up to 48khz but still showing a 16 bit depth....anybody have an idea how to get the full fat hi res to the SU...Thanks.

I don't know your particular UPnP software - typically there is a setting in playback settings: native. What your server may be doing is transcoding the high res files down to a cd-quality levels (sampling rate and bit-depth).

Thanks Adam that could be the issue...do you know of any upnp servers that can handle hi res music?

Asset and Minimserver are the two most popular choices among the forum members.

Easy answer is dump Plex,  its a video server,  not best for audio.   First a question,  how is your network connected?   wired or part wireless,  wired is 100% prefered as wireless can have issues with 24 bit higher sample rates.  Whatever UPnP you use its important to get the network basics right first.   The UPnP you need is the Synology included package 'Media Server'  it's purpose made for music streaming by Synology,  then with a correctly wired network, that's you set to go with 24/192kHz audio.    There are other items to discuss but first get that set up & have a play,  then we can go to the next step.

Final question;  what packages have you got installed on the Synology DSM?  All you need for audio streaming from NAS to SU is Media Server;  File Station & Search are mandatory,  so them & Media Server is all you need.  But just to be sure you are good in this area, what have you got installed.

Asset cannot be installed on Synology without some IT expertise & its not Synology supported,  Minimserver is an included Synology 3rd party package but has extra's such as Java needed to get it working.    The simplest solution by a long way - per my previous post - is the Synology's Media Server,  press install & its all set.

I already have minim installed along with the plex serve...I like the way the plex organisation system..it's a lot better than what I've came across.I wasn't happy with the way synology organised my music files..nothing was in order....track listings were alphabetical which I just can't deal with..I found minim had duplicated stuff all over the place and again was very messy but I think this was also to do with the fact I had started ripping cd's using the wmp and then I was advised by my naim dealer to stop right away and download db power amp and start again..which I did but the minim server still saw the deleted files and I ended up with lots of doubles.....why is anything never easy.....but minim seems to have settled down after rescans etc...but I haven't tried said server as yet with the hi res music.....so I'll give it a bash...thanks for the help people and I'll get back to you.

Track listings alphabetical ???  do you actually mean albums listed alphabetically ???    OK but I don't see whats hard to handle with that.   Let us all know how you get on sorting it out.

OK...it's a no...the minim server is playing a 44.1 khz file and I've checked the music file in the folder markserve (my folder name that's the path to the synology nas)and that is also a 44.1 khz file...so somewhere in the conversion from the download to my music something has went a bit pear-shaped . I'm going to download the file from qobuuz again and start again I think.....I am downloading it as flac 24 bit 96khz.

Hi Mike...erm no the track listings on every album were in alphabetical order via the synology server, which is unacceptable to me.

That means you've either ripped the albums incorrectly such as with missing metadata or something I'm at a loss over.  Each track on a CD or download has a track number to control the order the tracks are played in,  that should have been included in the dBpoweramp rip.  If you are saying its the same with bought in downloads,  I'm really struggling as I've not come up against this problem before,    & I've ripped & downloaded onto my  Synology which is now only used with Media Server,  plus in the past Minimserver & Asset for a few years now.    I need to have a think,  but this is very unusual & it has to be something at your end.

All cd's have been ripped fine and are very accurate....I have since deleted the synology server a few weeks back and I'm not sure how to go about getting it back on line as I was very happy with the plex serve which works extremely well until that is...you have some hi res files.lol.Anyway I have downloaded the tar file in qobuuz and am in the process of xtracting it via winrar into my markserve folder.....then I will rescan minim server and hopefully that should be it.....fingers x

Oh and I am in no way an expert on this stuff so if I'm doing something very wrong give me a wee shout out.lol.

Go to your PC/Mac Syn webpage > Main Menu > Package Centre > MultiMedia  & touch the Media Server 'Install' button.     But if you have Minimserver then I would stay with that.

I still can't workout why Synology gives album tracks in alphabetical order.

That's it...have 96khz coming through on both minim and synology server now.....plex needs to sort it's sh#t out.lol.thanks guys for the help. And all the alphabetical issues seems to have sorted itself out.Althogh various artists albums such as soundtracks and RnB (rap)albums are poorly dealt with

ah-h-h so-o sad,    we will never know  ............  enjoy the toones

Once you've got familiar & happy with whatever works best for you in a month or two,  you will be able to uninstall all but one of the UPnP media servers.

Oh excellent.just checked the plex sever and is also now playing the 96khz full fat hi res file....I must have mucked up the transfer from download to my markserve folder. It is the best at organising music I have encountered as yet.....but it does have a small charge of £3.99 per month.which I'll gladly pay for with it's features.

You don't really need to organise the music on your Synology, other than having a folder for each artist with their albums sitting beneath. How the app sees the files is entirely down to the metadata, unless you choose to use folder view, which always seems rather inflexible.

Posted on: 23 August 2017 by Skinnypuppy71

Hi there HH..It's  not too bad..just that various artists albums don't stay together when you search via the artist folder...which is my default search setting.lol.I really do prefer the way plex does it and it can also deal with most other media if I want it to.

Looks like some metadata is missing on the tracks.

As HH wrote - good metadata hygiene is essential. It is this infirmation that enables easy browsing, searching and cataloguing. Not the folder view. It's like viewing a database - you can look at raw data which is a bit difficult or you can have it sorted and organised in fields.

Not every file is as advertisied.... Some were upsampled during FLAC conversions or simply mislabeled when placed on-line.
