Nait 3 Popping when changing inputs....

Posted by: skip0327 on 28 August 2017

When I change inputs on my Nait 3, no matter which inputs, I hear a pop from the speakers. Has anyone had issues with this? If so, is there a solution. Thanks....

Hi,

Does this happen when the volume is turned all the way up or when the volume is on zero?

If the volume is on zero and you hear a loud click when the input button is pressed then this may suggest a fault, however if the volume is up high and you hear a 'faint' click when input is selected then I think this is normal...

Maybe others here with a more technical knowledge can be more helpful.

P.S. For this kind of thing i'll suggest contacting Naim direct.

Cheers

Exactly right Mr. Steven Tate.

When the volume control is on normal listening level. I've used the mute button, but I don't think that should be necessary when changing inputs. I think you're right, I'll contact Naim. Thanks....

Skip, does it happen if there are no sources connected to the amp?  I'm just wondering whether a floating source is causing the problem.

Let me add detail to my original question. I had this Nait 3 for eight years. I sold it last week and shipped the amp across the US. The buyer of the amp has reported to me two issues. The first is the popping sounds switching inputs. The second issue is the phono-stage isn't working. Using his turntable plugged to input 1, no sound. When he connects his turntable through an external phono amp with a DIN connection, the turntable plays fine. My original thought was the AUX input switch has failed. Although I'm not sure that would cause the popping noises. When I shipped the amp, all was working fine. I packed the amp well for shipping, but the amp could have been damaged in transit. The buyer has indicated he likes the amp and doesn't wish to return it, he seems like a stand-up guy to me. I won't be able to respond to questions from this forum until the buyer has reported back to me.

They should check the phono cards (it does have phono cards fitted doesn't it?) - they may have come loose if the box took a whack in transit.  If the buyer is worried they should take it to a Naim dealer who can open it up and check what's what and confirm whether it's all OK or not.

Yes, the phono cards are installed. I advised him to make sure the boards are seated properly. Also, there is an authorized Naim dealer in his hometown. Hopefully, he can have those guys have a look and see if it's an easy fix.

I heard good news from the new owner this morning. He pulled the phono boards out and reinstalled. That action resolved the problem, his turntable works fine and the mysterious pops have disappeared. Appreciate your help!

Glad to hear it is resolved.

The two most powerful repair techniques for anything electronic:

1) Turn it off, wait briefly and turn it on again.

2) Turn it off. Waggle and/or unplug and replug everything. Turn it on again.

The rule is to try 1) first if it's digital and 2) first if it's analogue.

It's reassuring that this worked for you in this potentially tricky situation!

best

Great news for a great amp!
