Speaker connections - Nova

Posted by: snes on 28 August 2017

Okay, I must confess my noobness here. And perhaps I should go hang my head in shame. You see,  my new Nova came with some lovely matching black speaker plugs. Gorgeous to look at - but I haven't a clue how to wire them up!

On my Qute, I simply used banana plugs, but felt it was time to do things a "bit more proper". The Nova plugs are different to the Qute ones - they have a single screw in the base, and the banana-y bits have a slot at the top, viewable through the cable entry point. I couldn't work out whether I should undo the screw and pull the plug apart or try and feed my wire into the slots and turn the pins to help grip. (I use the previous generation Naim cable)

I accessed the Nova support page, but it simply said that the unit is supplied with speaker plugs, but no hint as to how to connect them.

Am I really that stupid? Am I the only person to scratch his head over these things?

I am using my banana plugs at the mo - if I succeed in wiring the Naim plugs, is it worth the effort?

Being a bank holiday, I can't easily go back to ask my supplying dealer.

Definitely worth using the supplied Naim Speaker Connectors.  They are a solder connection so need to be properly fitted - best done by your dealer.  If you're up for soldering then check out the FAQ or one of a number of previous threads on the subject.

An interesting and helpful answer Richard, thank you.

In my defence, I did read the forum rules re faq checks before posting, but didn't find anything! (Forum/Directory/faq)

I bought some NACA5 from a French Naim Uniti dealer a while ago and asked for Naim plugs on the amp end with bananas on the speaker end. He disappeared round the back and was gone for ages, he came back cursing Naim plugs and the cable had bananas on both ends, he handed me the plugs. The soldering technique has been demonstrated to me by my English dealer but it is specific to Naim plugs with NACA5 as the untinned wire is a tight fit to start with, the cable is stiff and the plastic can melt if you're too slow about it. Not all overseas dealers get the training it seems but if you're in the UK I'd expect a proper job.
