Upgrade options
Posted by: diggygun on 29 August 2017
Hi All
I have the following set up;
Naim NAC 152 XS / NAP 155 XS / FlatCap and a Linn LP12 Sondek, Akurate spec with an Akurate Radikal power supply and a Urika phono stage amp. The phono cables, at the moment, are fitted with phono plugs, but I want to change these to Din at the next upgrade
Which leads me onto my next question. Looking now to upgrade the amplification and keeping with Naim and what would my options be. I know that Linn has an upgrade path and does Naim have an upgrade path?
My taste in music is varied from Jazz / Rock / Punk / Blues / 80s
Suggestions and guidance would be welcome
Thanks in advance
Does Naim have an upgrade path??? Well of course they do !!
Personally I would save for a significant step - 282/250 would fit the bill. After that you can look back to upgrading your source- arm, phono, etc
Happy to see that you are a vinyl man!
ATB,
Mark
OOPS, sorry I missed the Urika above...That will take you all the way to the 500 series no problem Keel, arm, cartridge ..
Don't forget the Hi Cap with the 282,250.
Karl
If speakers are easy or room small, your current amp is fine
No idea if Krystal is part of Akurate level otherwise this should be considered too
282/HiCap DR the 155x will stand up well to test until you are ready or able to go up to either 200 or 250.
The Krystal is a Linn MC cartridge

Sure but is that a part of your Akurate level ?
Thanks for the responses so far, but this gas now led to other questions
Am I correct in that the FlatCap XS could be used with the 282 as a start to the upgrade path. Then get the HiCap DR. Then get either 200 or 250
The CD player that I have is the CD5XS which also is upgraded by the FlatCap XS. If and when I change to the HiCap DR will this also power the CD player or do I need to keep the FlatCap as well
How good is the pre-owned market for the 282?
May I ask what speakers do you use ?

A Hicap can only power a preamp, so if you want to continue using an external PSU for your CD player, you'll need to keep the Flatcap.
The speakers are PMC Twenty 23s
Yes. The LP12 Akurate spec is: Deck / Kore sub-chassis / Akita Tonearn / Krystal MC cartridge / Lingo 3 power supply / Trampolin baseboard / Uphorik phono amp
Mine is as above, but I have the Akurate Radikal power supply and the Urika phono amp

What is the significant improvement with the 282 over the 152 if used with the FlatCap and 155
I've just found out how to respond to an answer

Ok
Thanks
I believe a bigger amp such as a 250 or 135 will match, I don't like the 250.2 version and can't comment on DR.
Another preamp is then needed as well, I'd choose a serviced 52/psu if possible
Next a recent 82/SC, guess this is better than 282/hc
Use your FC on CD5xs, better yet upgrade source now the amp is much more revealing.. EDIT, not if your primarily a vinyl user

95% vinyl, so not looking to do anything to the CD, just the amps

Ok, Personally I would purchase s/h or wait,
With new Uniti range launched or about to be, I'd expect a revamp of entire Nac/Nap range apart from Statement
New boxes to match Uniti range
New Volume knop arrangements with digits to show
Larger trafos to fit into higher cabinets
Perhaps some pretty new Naits or Statement level intg.
They need to do something
