Cable suggestion HiFiBerry Digi+ Pro -> nDAC

Posted by: michael1702 on 30 August 2017

Hello,

I am looking for a digital coaxial audio cable between a HiFiBerry Digi+ Pro running Roon bridge and a nDAC with XPS into NAC282, NAP250, SuperCap.

In the future I might upgrade to a NDX (if it supports Roon and Qobuz) or Auralic Aries.

Thanks a lot for your suggestions!

Kind regards,
Michael

Hi Michael,

That's interesting, I upgraded from an NDX to a Hifiberry Digi+ Pro!

I'm afraid I can't help you with the coax cable but I can say that I obtained very good results with the Digi+ using a simple optical cable.

The Digi+ can be a bit noisy with coax; for an immediate low-cost upgrade I strongly recommend checking out Allo's DigiOne which has BNC and RCA connections. I ordered my DigiOne with a BNC cable.

Totally agree about Roon. Any streamer that doesn't have it is just not an option anymore.

All the best, William

Hi William,

thanks a lot for your reply!

You switched from NDX to a Hifiberry Digi+ Pro? I thought I should go the other way round. Was the reason Roon? How is the sound different?

I have a cheap, borrowed coax cable because I didn't get any sound with the toslink cable. But that was before I installed Roon bridge. May be it would work now.

Do you prefer the Hifiberry Digi+ Pro or the Allo DigiOne? What is the difference?

Is Allo's DigiOne also supported by Roon? Can you adjust volume from Roon with it?

Kind regards,
Michael

Michael, yes the main reason was Roon.

Initially I had a bare NDX, which is a very good piece of kit. Then I added a low-cost DAC and preferred the sound.

Now the NDX was only providing the transport so when I got the Hifiberry and gave Roon a go, there was no going back. I invested in a beautiful Pavane DAC and eventually settled for Allo's USBridge which is their equivalent of the DigiOne but with USB output.

I still can't believe the sound through the 252/300 DR. I even compared the NDX and XPS DR and still preferred the SQ from the tiny USBridge into my DAC. I'm not going to try to describe the sound difference between NDX and DigiOne/DAC, it's a totally different character and my opinion won't be relevant unless you get a Pavane. Better you try it out with your nDAC and hear for yourself.

i prefer the DigiOne to the Hifiberry. The sound is clearer, the bass is punchier, the soundstage is bigger. I suggest you head over to the Roon Community, there's quite a bit of stuff to read there on the DigiOne. I prefer the USBridge to DigiOne with my DAC.

Yes it supports Roon. For volume control I use my old-fashioned remote, so I can't say for sure if it's adjustable, but I hear fixed volume is usually preferred for both DigiOne and Hifiberry anyway.

Also the support team at Allo is excellent and you'll also find them in the Roon Community.

Hope this helps, looking forward to hearing how you get on...

William, due to your feedback I read a little bit more about the Allo DigiOne - and ordered one yesterday.

So I am very curious (and still think about the right cable).

Do you use your USBridge over LAN or WLAN?

Hi Michael, good to hear.

I use LAN.
