Network (again) - router recommendation

Morning all

up until say a few months ago all was well with my Uniti2, Mu-so and Qb. On the app always had all three up and available, not even a drop out on Tidal. Now almost every time I fire up the app (iphone or iPad) it searches for rooms, often without success - even if I had used it only say 5 minutes prior! Only way to fix is a reboot of app.

I am not an expert with this sort of thing, I have loaded net analyser but am not sure about what it is saying.

Uniti2 is wired and the other two are via wifi. Network is BT fibre in (Huawei EchoLife) - Zyxel NBG 4604 router/wifi, then remote wired switch for Uniti2, NAS (Synology) and Mac mini (ripping)

Seeing other threads that state a firmware upgrade to the router/wifi access has fixed issues, I tried, unfortunately my ISP (Zen) do not carry any and said it was an old model anyway. The Zyxel site has nothing for the model either.

Therefore I am looking for recommendations on either a fix or a good modern router (middle ground please, not looking to spend a fortune).

I've had an Apple Airport Extreme for some time now, and it's been very good, and also very easy to set up. Maybe not the most up to date technology, but it has 802.11ac wifi, and does what I need it to do. Rather than replacing my ISP supplied router, I just disable wifi on it, and connect the AE to one of its ports.

Before giving up on your current setup, have you tried a full network restart? Shut down your router and every device that connects to it. Then restart the router, and leave it for a few minutes. Then restart everything else, one device at a time.

This same approach is what I've done and it's been extremely reliable for going on years now.

Same approach here and very reliable. I disabled wifi on my BT hub and also use a couple of airport express to extend the wifi across the house.

I replaced the ISP cable modem with NETGEAR Nighthawk X4S DOCSIS 3.1, a bit pricy but it is very good, I'm getting ~ 900-950Mbps download and 40-42Mbps upload speeds on my desktops on a wired connection.

Not sure if it works in the UK.

I have a Zyxel from Zen too which I now run as a modem only in bridged mode to a Ubiquiti router.

I've found this router to be excellent and it has very good throughput and has stabilised by network.

It's not a particularly user friendly device though and if you wanted to manually set it up it'd probably be daunting (I've just gone with a preset as I've not had time to get to grips with the documentation plus it needs Java for the details in the interface).

Just thought I'd mention it as it's pretty transparent in operation and just works though is wired only.

My setup is:

Zyxel (Modem) ---bridged mode--> Ubiquiti  ---> Ethernet subnet 1------> Netgear 8 port switch

Ubiquiti ---> Ethernet Subnet 2 ----> Work PC

Netgear switch ----> Ethernet in rooms + Apple Airport Express for wi-fi duties

Subnet 1 and 2 cannot see each other (I think they can be configured to do so possibly with a performsnce hit).

It has excellent reviews at Amazon but I'm daunted by the interface but apart from updating shipping firmware and setting it to use a preset it just works.
