Unitilite showing folder as (Empty), PC shows files are in there.

Posted by: coachpotato on 08 September 2017

I recently copied 2 cd's of .wav files to my ReadyNAS 102 storage from my PC using Exact Audio Copy. To keep things in order, I made a folder of the named CD, with subfolders called Disc 1 and Disc 2. After EAC had finished copying, I checked the files were there on the NAS, which they were. I restarted the NAS and, later on, accessed the folder(s) through the menu system on my Unitilite. It showed the files listed for Disc 1, but the Disc 2 folder as (Empty).

I rechecked the folders through my PC, both folders showed the existence of the files and in numerical order. I tried using EAC again to copy the files for Disc 2, same result. The discs are not copies, also further discs are also producing the same result.

Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

What UPnP server are you running on your NAS - it's this that is serving music to your streamer. Maybe try getting it to rescan your music folder for starters.

The file structure you use for your music is irrelevant, as the server/streamer ignores this and reads the metadata tags for each album/track? Have you tried using a metadata editor to look at these?

Hello ChrisSU,

Thanks for your very swift reply!

I have Asset UPnP running my home system and, at the risk of sounding a newbie (which I am!) I hope I'm right in believing this is what you mean by a server.

The NAS is a Netgear unit, as I expect you'll know, which I've only got in the last few weeks when my previous NAS decided to stop working. I was able to get the drive in that repaired to allow me to get all the data (music files) off and transfer to the new NAS, which has a mirror drive (RAID?) as a backup.

I have an authorised copy of Magic ID3 Tagger from the MusicBrainz people stored on a USB backup drive which I'll reinstall on my PC and run to see if that'll do the trick regarding the metadata. I hadn't thought to do that (obviously!) so thanks for the good advice.

I'll let you know how I get on, but again, cheers for the reply.

Dave.

It might make sense to get dbpoweramp, from the people who make Asset. It's very good for metadata, and to rip CDs. If you rip to the PC you can simply copy them to your nas with Explorer. If you map the drive it makes things easier, as the nas will show up as if it's part of the computer itself. Once dbpoweramp is installed, you just right click on the file or files and you will see 'edit ID' in the drop down. Remember that you need to do all tracks in an album. It's really easy once you've done it a few times. Even I can do it, so it must be simple.

Yes, Asset is a UPnP server. I don't use it myself, but I'm sure there will be an option to rescan your music folder in it somewhere. No guarantees that this will solve anything, but worth a try just to make sure it's looking at your whole library, including any recent changes to it.

Worth a look at your metadata tags just in case anything didn't copy over correctly from your old drive.

By the way, RAID is not really a backup. I would strongly recommend that you back up to at least one other hard drive, which could be another NAS, or just a USB drive.

Thanks for the replies Hungryhalibut & ChrisSU.

I've thought about trying dbPoweramp for a while now. Might make sense to get a copy of that and try it out.

I have MusicBrainz, which has a tagger included, and I have their Magic MP3 Tagger program but both are for MP3 files, and, while I could convert to 320K MP3, I think I'd rather keep the files as .wav straight from the CD.

Once again, I appreciate the great advice, I'll get onto this when I have more time in the next few days and report back!!

Thanks again.

Dave

Use dBpoweramp, easy to use

download music from your preferred music site, I tend to use Qobuz, store on NAS as FLAC files, for the car save as MP3 with apple on IPod

metadata is a breeze to amend

Right , a successful conclusion !!

As suggested, I installed dbPoweramp package on my PC, including Asset cd ripping software.

I ripped the disks that weren't being recognised to a separate folder (changing the saved file format to Track> Title) and once the rip had finished, I opened up the readyNAS in explorer, deleted the existing files and then copied over the newly ripped files from the PC.

When I went into the Unitise and accessed the folders, the tracks were there as listed.

One thing I did notice was that one of the discs, a compilation, had queries on 3 tracks by the ripping software, this was cleared by running the rip again and selecting just the tracks with faults noted against them.

The tracks "passed" second time around.

So thanks to you all for the advice and knowledge, it is appreciated!

Cheers.

That should read Unitilite of course!

Hurrah! Well done. It's great to get these problems sorted out. Dbpoweramp is very good.
