Max B, trust me, it was the first time I heard of a Bell curve also. And I felt the exact way you expressed yourself above.
But in any event, here's the thread:
""{Is my Cdx2, headed to Avoptions!}
Hi guys,
I own a 7 years old CDX2.2 and it is still fine without any problem. I ask you if you know if Naim suggest to do a checking/recapping of some component inside the player after a suitable period or not? I read some opinions about people that recapped thei black boxes and when they get back eveything sounded better than before ![]()
Thank you in advance for your support!
If it's all still working ok - I.e. The mech is working fine then leave well alone. Only service when the mech is failing or it's sounding obviously sick.
Thank you Richard for your feedback!
Yes DAMY79, if it ain't broke, leave well enough alone!
I have a 2008 Mk I, without the digital out.
If I'm not mistaken it was three major changes, I know someone will correct me, but:
1250 VAM~ rubber o rings~2002 model
1202 VAM ~ plastic magnetic cap~ 2005??
Cdx2.2 MK I ~ Digital out~ 2009 model
But DAMY79, the Bell Curve is 9 years, mine went out exactly the 9th year!
Had it serviced this February!
She was skipping, and not cueing properly!
But smooth as silk now!
So Mr. Richard Dane is point on, as usual!

I have little plastic which secures the discs part broken, it shows error sometimes and require carefull placing and couple of trials, will i need to change all transport for a 1 cent plastic?
Emre, do you mean the little platter, or the clamp? If the platter, then yes - it's all one replaceable unit. If the transport mech is coming out, even if it were possible to take it apart and change the platter, it would be better and easier (and possibly cheaper due to the labour) to change the entire mech. If the clamp, then no, just buy a new clamp.
Thanks Richard it is the little platter only, the part that the disc sits in, now it is partially broke but still able to read disks after a little effort, i hope that is can be fixed in Turkey by distributor
almost 10 years and very happy with my cd2x
As a temporary measure it could be worth trying to glue it with plastic glue - the risk being it would need a new mech if it goes badly.
Ah yes, I had the same thing happen to a CD5i a few years back (1202 mech?), a tiny plastic segment had broken off the main platter or hub?
The CD would sit on the platter uneven or very loosely with a tiny bit of play and it was touch or go if the laser would read the CD or not. After some thought, I managed to very delicately (using tweezers) to superglue that little segment back (after a couple of 'dry' goes beforehand) and that did the trick.
Of course one might like to get into the habit of placing the puck onto the hub as gently as possible so the magnetic force does not snatch the puck from one's fingers. ![]()
The broken plastic segment seems to be a common problem with the players that use that mechanism. My old CDX2 had it but it did not add much to the off-centre wobble & seemed to play OK. I promised myself a new mech if a 2nd segment broke, which would probably make playing impossible. I did not not check out the price of a new drive myself but heard of something like £250 & that was 2012 (ish)

Hi,
it's the first time I hear of the existence of a Bell Curve. On the other hand, I know a number of people who have non-Naim CD players that are working fine since 20/25 years. I can only plaude the diligence and sense of time of your CDP!

When I was researching CD Mech mean time before failure rates, it was interesting to see the bell curves - IIRC Philips data showed that apart from a spike in the first year it really began to shoot up around the 5th or 6th year, and they were above the average. Quite a long gently sloping tail though, which I guess explains all those mechs that are still working day in day out after 30 years or more.

@ Adam, if I had your money, I would have a 552, instead of this measly 282!!!LOL...
But seriously, antonio forcine, is really sounding good, the fingers on the strings APPEAR, to stand out more, who knows.
But as my Father used to say, if you like it, I love it!!!!
