Naim Qb a Win Win Situation!!

Posted by: wenger2015 on 09 September 2017

Just purchased a Qb, it was all set up very easily.

I must say I am pleasantly surprised at just how good it sounds.

SWMBO.... also seems hugely impressed....So I have earned a few brownie points........ plus I have just noticed if a Qb  is purchased between September 1st and 2nd October, you can claim £50 cash back from Naim, and more if you purchase a Muso.

So if anyone is thinking of making a purchase, nows a very good time.

Congratulations [@mention:50422349809511500]. I was mighty impressed by the sound that little box makes too. I may have to get in touch with our dealer myself

I was thinking it would sound ok, but certainly not expecting it to sound as good as it does.

I think my morning coffee, before leaving for work  is going to be even more enjoyable.....and the Roberts radio will be demoted to the shed.

I could leave the Roberts radio on and it might deter burglars....from helping themselves to the contents of the shed.

I just got myself a Qb and am very impressed.

For a larf, after it had warmed up a bit from box opening, I stuck on 'Drum and Bass Intro' from the Nils Lofgren Band Live album and whacked up the volume. This is unashamedly a huge sounding, close miked track of just Drum and...err...Bass.

I wasn't expecting too much but after a couple of seconds in our jaws dropped and we then began to giggle. Very stupid, very juvenile, but a lot of fun. Go on, give it a go, you know you want to (ssshhhh, its on Tidal).

How Naim have managed to get such a huge sound out of such a tiny box I simply don't know.

It just goes to show, you don't need to spend many thousands of pounds to enjoy music on a Naim system and the Qb is a system in its own right. The team at Naim are very smart because the Qb should temp many music lovers into the fold. Or just enjoy th Qb for what it is.

Great bit of kit for very little money.

I'm another fan. I got one for the kitchen last year so that I could listen while cooking, I've ended up with three scattered around the house, I multiroom happily as I leave the main room.

They really play music, yes for sustained concentrating listening I want the main system (and when it's delivered for the upstairs lounge the new Nova/PMC system),  but for the bedroom/kitchen short-term listening I am amazed how good they are.

As Nigel suggests above, the bass is amazing for such a tiny box, possibly a bit fuller than I'd like, but genuinely quick. And it does go loud, surprisingly loud.

The 300W claim amuses me, I'm sure the amps do sum to 300W, and for part of their target market that probably helps, but it's very un-old-Naim in my mind. I use 135s, the fact that even into 4ohms they don't do 300W isn't a problem, I understand the reasons why they say it, but it's a different world for Naim.

On your recommendation, the First track of the morning, is going to be 'Drum and Bass '..... Just hope I don't have a couple of brownie points withdrawn from SWMBO.......

Wenger, to really appreciate this track, it needs to be veerrry loud, so best wait until SWMBO leaves the house and preserve those brownie points.

The single Mu-so box contains 5 drivers and 5 amplifiers (4 x 50, 1 x 100) so is fully active.  The reason the box can play so loud is that is has drivers capable of handling a lot of power and it has amplifiers capable of delivering a total of 300 watts. To be fair to Naim,  I'm not sure how you'd express that any other way, given its a single box.   Recognising its an entry level product, how many customers are going to understand the concept of fully active and multiple amps?

Bass can be tuned in a number of ways. Via the inbuilt equalisation based on wall proximity and via speaker position. Placed near 1 room boundary  (the middle of a wall), 2 room boundaries I.e in a corner or well away from any walls will strongly affect the bass balance relative to other frequencies.

Most speakers of Mu-so dimensions will produce bass when properly positioned, but the few I've heard its typically just a foundation rather than actual musical bass. Mu-so is able to play bass tunes, getting the pitch right and with sufficient timbre to clearly differentiate between different types of instruments. That is quite a feat considering both dimensions and price.

In typical Naim fashion, they have been able to compromise on the hi-fi performance while strongly preserving and emphasizing the fun elements of music. IMO, they got the balance just right. MuSo doesn't do a lot of things but that absolutely doesn't matter when its making you dance around the kitchen.  Mu-so also does one trick that your main hi-fi can't and that's to sound good and balanced in almost any room position.

Yes, good point.

Depending how long I'm in the shed, I may have to look into multi room options....

Umm…that doesn't sound like it is sorted at all.

Wives can be hard….I have the scars to prove it. Might I suggest that you do actually buy her some shoes of her own choosing. Umm….nah, that will only remind her of the 'issue'.

Best lie low in the shed for a bit.

Just looked at the spec. 3.5mm coax analgue input. Presumably it will work with a chord Mojo?

If so, anybody used it with a high quality dac.

Good question, I have wondered the same thing. The internal DAC in the Qb will certainly be one of its limiting factors. My NDS analogue output (in addition to the usual DIN) is a twin RCA (red & white) but the Qb analogue input is 3.5mm single coax which leaves me wondering what analog cable is used to connect the two and if this advisable.
