How Do You Get Your SuperLumina DIN/XLR Off The Floor?

Posted by: nigelb on 14 September 2017

I am getting  a SL DIN/XLR tomorrow and at 1.5m it is way too long for those of us with a single stack of Fraim to be off the floor when fitted. My Supercap and 250 are on the bottom two shelves of my Fraim (where they will stay), so much of the SL DIN/XLR's length will be resting on the floor which I am led to believe will be rather detrimental to SQ.

I know HH has successfully tied a very loose knot in his SL DIN/XLR and that keeps his off the floor because his 272 is towards the top of his rack. Even with a loose tie, I am pretty sure mine will still be on the floor. I currently have my Witch Hat DIN/XLR resting on a foam pad. However I was wondering if others with the same issue have found a solution which is optimal from an SQ point of view.

My din to XLR is only 1m long. I suggest you get them to send you a shorter one. You could also try putting a nail in the wall at a suitable height where it would remain hidden, and suspending the wire with a bit of cotton. But get a shorter one first. And prepare for it to sound really weird for a couple of weeks.

You can rest the cable on some sort of foam (the one that looks like an egg-box), which is placed on the floor behind your rack. Tried and tested solution.

Unfortunately this is pre loved one so not able to exchange it. Good idea about the nail and cotton.

Ah, ok. Try to get it off the floor. Mine sounded better completely suspended rather than resting on foam.

Hi Adam, that sounds like some kind of acoustic foam. I'll have a look on the river.

I have some of my cables lifted off the floor using foam pipe insulation, so may try that too if I am unable to suspend it off the floor as HH suggests.

Makes absolutely no difference to the sound if it's touching the floor ( unless the floor is suspended and can be felt to vibrate) - try it and hear if there's a difference you can detect in a blind A/B comparison.

I Googled 'cable suspension' and got this:

I didn't realise simply getting yer DIN/XLR off the floor would be so exhausting.

There must be an easier way!

HH is commonly recognized as almighty, but these are the two best solutions.

Just buy more expensive foam, it'll be fine!

I have bought some very posh wavy acoustic foam off the river for 59p. That's the jobby for me!

Worth it I think to see if it makes any difference considering how much I have just spent on a bit of wire!

Do they turn black only when sufficiently shaken?

Posted on: 14 September 2017 by ChrisSU

That's a bit racist, isn't it? Oh.....sorry, you meant the Snaics

Posted on: 14 September 2017 by nigelb

I have actually seen the Snaic shaker in action at the factory, and a fine piece of engineering it is too.

Makes you proud to be British (and eccentric), doesn't it?

I sense this thread is ever so slightly going off-piste and will end up in that place (The Padded Cell).

So be it!

keen to know if the SL makes a big improvement compared to the Witch Hats.

Posted on: 16 September 2017 by nigelb

SL DIN/XLR is a big improvement on the Witch Hat and so it should be considering the price differential. I have only had time for one serious listening session but the improvement is clear. I suspect the improvement is not just down to the addition of this one cable but rather due to the fact that it completes a full SL loom, with all the added synergy I believe that brings.

I will try to update with more detail when I have had some more listening time and the cable has bedded in a bit more.

But so far, so very good!

Two loose knots will work

I am afraid that won't work for me as my Supercap and 250 occupy the bottom two shelves of my Fraim and my DIN/XLR is 1.5m long. My only option is to hang it off the wall behind the Fraim or rest the cable on something to keep it off the floor. At the moment I am using foam pipe insulation to suspend the cable off the floor but might play around with other solutions if I get time and if I can be a*s*d
