Cisco 2960 set up

Posted by: RICHYH on 18 September 2017

I have acquired a Cisco 2960 ttl with bespoke 48v linear power supply to get a definitive appraisal for myself vs Paul Pang Zyxel tcxo and ocxo switches. Please could the forum (Simon in Suffolk particularly) tell me how to set up a cisco 2960. I have factory reset it, I am only using it as my hifi switch, so which 2 Ethernet inputs do I use and to get sound from it. so far I have to press the little tab on the front to the 3rd LED. Is this the best setting for it and is there a way to automatically go to this setting when turned on?

thanks

I just wired it up, did not work, then held the little tab until the all lights lit up, all lights flashed left it for a while and e voila was up and working - probably a fluke

If you have factory reset it then all ports will be in the same VLAN and set to auto auto for speed and duplex. The ports might take a little.longer to come up than you expect but you should be getting link lights within 10-15 seconds I'd have thought.

Use any of the main group of ports rather than any set off to the side, these are intended for uplinks rather than end-points.

There is a whole load of config that can be done but isn't needed to use it as a basic layer two switch.

Many thanks. Maybe it is not factory reset then. How is it done?

Hi, if in factory default mode you can use the switch plug and play... so it sounds like it isn't or the previous owner didn't reset it and so is probably locked down with security passwords etc.. this is going to be a little involved to reset it...

You will need the blue serial console lead (again should have come with switch.. or simply got from regular online auction sites / rain forests etc.. and connect to a serial terminal such as putty on a PC or  serial console on a Mac
