Uniti nova
Posted by: Nordberg on 20 September 2017
Hi all I'm new to the forum and would welcome some feedback on this particular issue. I took delivery of a uniti nova last week and am mostly happy although some minor issues have arose and I wondered if anyone else had the same experience. I use tidal for all my listening and have found that occasionally when pressing play on playlist or album it will either only play the first song or play the first song and then skip forward several tracks ( I made sure I hadn't pressed shuffle) . Sometimes when accessing tidal through naim app it can't find my music so I have to exit and go back in a few times until it sorts itself out also the control bar will sometimes say 'not playing' when there is a track playing or may even display previous track, again resulting in me having to exit and re- enter app which seems to work more often than not. Is this an issue with tidal? A software issue or a faulty unit? I will point out that I was previously using a uniti 2 without any problems so I don't think it's my setup. Any thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated.
Nordberg, I've moved this thread to the Streaming Audio room which is probably more appropriate for it. I'm not a Tidal user so cannot help you here but if you're having issues then do get in touch with Naim support either via e-mail or by phone.
Welcome Nordberg -
I recommend you contact Naim and join the beta test team. Issues like this are under firmware development, and very few forum members have the newest systems, so your experience and feedback would be valuable I'm sure. You would also have the best pipeline to the newest (not ready for prime time) builds of both the app and the firmware.
The Tidal "first track only" was an identified bug in the app; it has received attention, although I'm not sure it is fully fixed.

Ok thanks for that. To be honest I have been in contact with naim and they advised me to send it back to the dealer and have them test it to see if it is a faulty unit or if it's an external issue. I would prefer to avoid doing that for the moment and see if things improve. This is why I've decided to see if anyone else has had similar problems, if not then I will look to return it for testing.
On a sidenote, I am also considering moving from my Uniti2 to the Nova. What are your experiences so far apart from the Tidal-issue?
I did have a couple of occasions where I have the screen stuck showing an album cover, even though I have I have played several other albums after the stuck screen album. In the end I de-powered the Nova and that sorted it, though it did recur a few days later. This was playing Uniti Core with upnp. Naim informed, no response as yet?
Hi all thanks for the replies so far. Regarding uniti 2 v nova sound wise I feel it to be more muscular with better control of low frequencies and an overall more detailed midrange and sweeter treble. As much as I loved my uniti 2 there was the odd occasion I had to dial back the volume a bit, with the nova you want to turn it up. Functionality wise I only use tidal at the moment so I couldn't comment on the other inputs.
Try downloading a few high res albums, then you’ll find out what your rather expensive new box is really capable of.

Nordberg, best to uninstall and do a clean Tidal install, that worked for me.
That said if you are on IOS and moved to v11 could be a new issue with the Naim app.
In short you are probably pressing once, getting nothing, pressing again, again, app catches up and you end up skipping.

If, like me, you prefer to use the remote control of the Uniti you might find the new range frustrating. As it does not allow uPNP access or search functionality with the remote, only with the Naim App (which was a bit buggy when I used it with the Atom)
In my room which is quite large I am sitting 10 or 12 feet from my Nova. With my eyesight the input selection from screen would be impossible from the remote as I cannot see the Icons and description I have given the inputs. I have suggested to Naim is it possible to user define the colour code the inputs?, no answer on that. So with the above, the remote is only good for volume and switching to standby.
Putting all that to one side, it’s a great, musical amp, another a Naim classic.

...and a very quick way of muting the music if you receive a phone call!

I'm sure many of us have different requirements and ways in which we use our systems. I find the screen on the SU just about right, but then I sit about 2.5m away. Any further and I'd probably need to open up the App. The nice thing about having a remote is that my wife and kids can also use the hi-fi when I (and my smartphone) are not home.
Hi all, so naim have again recommended I return the nova to dealer so they can test it which to be honest I'd like to avoid due to the hassle of repacking, arranging for collection etc plus being without music for an unknown period of time. Also it's worked without incident for the last 48 hrs. The only niggle being when listening to an eagles album on tidal it displayed a different album cover on front screen to what was on app although this appeared to be an issue purely with that group as every other album/artist I tried was fine. Therefore I'm tending towards keeping it for the time being. Hopefully it might work properly now. We shall see.
Nordberg - i've had my Nova for over a month+, prior to that the Atom, both are superb, so keep the Nova.
That said keep it on the basis there will be occasional app issues, i still regularly get them but kinda got to to the overlook and bear with it.
Best solution is everytime Naim or Tidal update the app, totally uninstall them all and reinstall IF you have an issue.
Question for NAIM guru. Is the DAC section of the Atom is the same as the one in the Nova ? No speculation please here, fact, need fact.

No Guru on my behalf but...
The streaming boards itself may be quite the same, but the amp as well as the preamp sections differ.
So I've had my nova for nearly 2 weeks now and despite uninstalling and reinstalling both tidal and naim apps issues still persist. Today I was playing track 15 on a tidal playlist and it then decided to play track 6 and 7 instead of 16. This skipping of/playing random tracks seems to be a near daily occurrence now. Unfortunately it looks like I may have to return it for testing to see if I've been unfortunate enough to have a faulty unit as naim said that these issues don't appear to be widespread so I may just very unlucky!

Sorry, I can't move specific replies around from thread to thread.
I believe the new Unitis use the same DAC chips - Burr Brown PCM1791As as found in the NDX, NAC-N272, DAC-V1 etc.. However, I don't know the details of how they differ in their application.
It's interesting reading Paul Miller's Lab report of the Hifi News review of the Nova that just came out today. It concludes that jitter at <10psec is the lowest he's measured of this DAC chip and he concludes "this deeply impressive result pays testament to the rigours of Naim's digital engineering."
Hopefully that helps towards answering your query.
