Uniti Atom Speakers

Posted by: Fredbred on 20 September 2017

Total newbie to quality hifi taking my first tentative steps and I’ve just purchased a Uniti Atom. It’s currently paired with Zensor 1’s (previously paired with a Denon CEOL), and although it sounds ok, I want the best from my new system. I’m now looking to upgrade my speakers, but they MUST be bookshelf size or thereabouts. So far, I’ve listened to Totem Mites and Kef LS50’s but just didn’t feel either was a good pairing. I have Dynaudio Emit M10’s on my list to listen to next, but was wondering if anyone can suggest other options. I can probably stretch to about £1000. Thanks

Neat Iota? Especially if they need to actually go on bookshelves.

Remember that most 'bookshelf' speakers perform better on dedicated stands with some space around them, rather than actually sitting on a shelf with their backs up against the wall. Also, for speakers to work at their best, they really need to match your room acoustics as much as the system that's driving them, and the only way to establish this is to try them at home. A good dealer (or two) can be very useful in helping with this. Good luck!

Thanks - appreciated.

Dealer has been great and will arrange a home listening session once I have a few ideas to work with. I could maybe stretch to stands by rearranging the room a bit - it depends how much the divorce would cost. I should also have said that my tase is eclectic, ranging from prog rock right through to Vivaldi and everything in between, so I basically need a miracle speaker that can handle anything thrown at it.

I have a pair of PMC Twenty 21's on my Qute 2 - worth a try, there my be some end of line bargains to be had and they sound terrific, well to me anyway. Tried Neat Iota's and if you're really strapped for space, they're very good, just a little 'insubstantial', so I opted for the PMC's. Of course YMMV, so home trial is always best.

Good luck and post some comments on the Atom in due course.

I’ll add the PMC 21’s to my list of possibles - thanks. Once I decide I’ll update and hopefully help out someone else new to this like me.

I really like the look of the new ProAc Tablette 10, though I've not heard it. My dealer was very complimentary about the smallest of the Russell K range; they are certainly small and beautifully made. A couple of ideas anyway.

I really enjoy my Dali Zensor 3 with my Qute. I even have a couple other pairs of more expensive speakers/better speakers. The synergy between Naim/Dali is really good. For me this combo is fun, not as refined as others, but fun is what I want when listening to music.

The small Russel K50 is bookshelf size but will not work very well in such placement close to boundaries

In fact if you intend to put your speakers in a bookshelf chances are they pretty much won't perform best

Even the Tablette 10 which is designed to work close to rear wall, will perform much better free standing on dedicated stands. (But close to wall)

You might get away with bookshelf placement using Iota's, great little box

Intended placement is important, "Bookshelfs" are not allways suitable playing in there

Iotas work really well when placed on shelf against back and/or side walls. They produce terrific bass for their size, with no boom or muddiness - well worth a demo. For those wanting more bass many owners suggest using a sub with them.

Can't agree more especially where space is at a premium If you are going the subwoofer route, have a look at the neat alpha

as for speakers like kef ls50, make sure you use them on a proper stand or they are far from good. They also take a long time to break in...

the important is that you keep listening in different configuration until you hear the sound you "like". I heard a gazillion speakers from budget to silly prices. The one that I loved was the one everyone told me to avoid !!! Go wonder

Overwhelmed by all the good advice here. I’m not going to rush and make the wrong decision, so I’ll pester the local dealers until I find what’s right for me - that’s what they’re there for. I’ll report back with my final choice and why.

Try demo a pair of PSB Imagine mini if you can, they sound FULL!

Fred, with a grand to spend the Proac Tab 10 should be on your audition list, easy to drive and will sound great on the end of the Atom.

The Rega bookshelfs work surpricingly well in strange placements even they're backported

The old RS1 beeing a bit livelier than the most recent (and better imo) RX1

They are an easy load so its like double the Atom power or just

I haven't had a chance to hear the Proac Tablette 10 but the Anniversary Tablette -- with an Unitiqute and an XS2. And I thought the Anniversary Tablette was rather impressive, especially considering the size. In the audition with the Unitiqute I also heard Neat's SX3, which I actually preferred because of SX3's exceptional treble. Allegri's Miserere is my reference piece for treble -- SX3 were really, really good. In the end, I settled for PMC -- used or ex-demo 20.21 should be well within budget. The new 25 series is a bit pricier, but gorgeous...

I've heard Naim Atom and Neat Iota today for the second time, it is, indeed, an extraordinarily happy mating.

Love my Uniti Atom with the Neat Motive SX2 ...

In my view, the Audiovector QR1 is a bargain

I recently heard the atom with the neat iota and thought it was a special pairing - some real synergy there

I had Zensor1s, which I upgraded to Zensor3s to give a fuller sound - Zensors are fine speakers. But this was before getting my Qute. With this, I started with B&W 685s, which I thought sounded ok until I was seduced by the rave reviews people were giving the LS50s. So I went in that direction - they certainly look stunning and to my ears have a nice sound ( I listen to dance music - house, garage etc). Before choosing these, I home trialed some Emit20s. In my room, with my set up, the bass was far too much out of control. I did consider trialing the Emit10s, but decided against.

Curiously, when I went in to my supplying dealer to discuss my new Naim order, he had the Atom paired with Emit10s and it sounded just lovely! Perhaps I should have trialed them after all....

None of the above ramblings will help you much, as it is your ears and your room which will decide your choice. It does however  confirm that for a lot of us, choosing speakers is not an easy process!

Afternoon all,

First post here, forgive any glaring etiquette faux pas!

Many years ago, I bought myself an Arcam amp and CD player and asked the chap in the shop if a bit more money would make that much difference. He pulled over a Naim CD player that looked like something Fisher Price would sell. All big buttons and not much subtlety. He plugged it in and I heard things I'd never heard before on my favourite CD at the time. So, I resolved, that one day I'd own a bit of Naim kit. I think that time has come,

Having gone round the houses a little on this, I think I'm settling on a Star. I like proper, physical CDs, rather than just files which sit somewhere. Mrs MPR has granted permission in our new house for a way to play music in the living room (I've got a Mu-So Qb ready to go for another part and a NAS also prepared- a WD MyCloud). The room is a decent size but the house is very old and the ceiling quite low. It's an odd shape as well which doesn't lend itself well to having big speakers (it doesn't really need them), nor a book case where the Star is likely to go . Mrs MPR is also "quite keen" (i.e. "no, we're not having them") that they're not big, intrusive things either. Having reach umpteen reviews and googled and re-googled, I got it down to the Neart Iota and the Eclipse TD307MK2A. Her viewpoint is based entirely on how they look and the Eclipse were immediately given the thumbs up so it looks like my decision is made. Are there any alternatives with "alternative" designs? Does anyone own any of their products? There are a few comments from a few years back including one which implied they can't make a piano sound like a piano. I can convince myself to spend a decent sum on the speakers, but probably not into 4 figures. We have a toddler and a chatty dog (she's a good girl, 14/10) and so evening spent listening to the minutiae aren't on the cards, I just need something that will sound decent and be unobstrusive.

Thanks!
