Core App problems

Posted by: Ian Brown on 22 September 2017

I have not seen a recent thread for Core problems and since the app was recently updated I thought a new topic wouldn't hurt.

Ihave had my Core since early this Spring.  My plan was to use it at my office, load up music and then bring it home for Christmas this year.  For me it solved the dilemma of wanting the convenience of digital music and avoid the mountain of CDs I have collected.

I soon discovered the glitches and meta data problems others have experienced and documented and so my plan evolved to "wait for Naim to fix the app" and then bring home the Core.

After sending reports to Naim, upgrading my operating devices (I have the app on an Apple se and a current Samsung phone along with my ipad mini 4), downloading the current software from Naim - the problems remain.

I experience the following:

  1.  Album art is slow to load on any / all of the devices (It's better on the Apple se but very slow on the ipad).

  2. In Albums, on the Samsung, when I touch albums on the right hand side of the screen, the app either crashes or sends      me somewhere else in the album menu, as if I have swiped the screen instead of tapping an album.

  3. Some albums (cover or tribute albums confuse the app) show up as being for different artists.

  4. The app falls asleep when an album finishes and becomes non-functioning.  The app needs to be closed and reopened before it works again (That may be a setting on the actual unit?).

  4. Deleting the app and reinstalling it does not fix the problems nor does rebooting the Core.

Right now the App is simply not good enough to bring home to house full of music loving teenagers.

Any help with the above would be appreciated!

This sounds a lot worse than I see with the current IOS app and my Core.

1) I don't see any slowness at loading album art on my iPhone SE or my iPad Air. How good is your office wifi?

2) I don't use the Android app so can't comment, but there is a new release of the Android app imminent so hopefully that will be fixed.

3) This is a function of the online databases that the Core consults. You will need to edit the metadata. There is a limitation at the moment that the Core can't correctly handle multiple artists in compilation-type albums.

4) That's what I would expect given the issues are those you mention.

I know this isn't at all helpful, but anyway for what it's worth it is my reaction.

Ian,David, I recently switched from Android to IOS using a IPad Pro the difference in the IOS speed over the Android is quite staggering.

I still have and Android phone and tablet but rarely use theset as the IOS device is much better particularly when using my Core to be quite truthful the Core is a different machine to use with IOS so much better.

Can't comment on item three.

Hi Ian, I use Android (via my Vodafone Smart Ultra 6 phone) and experience the same when selecting albums from the App. (I don't have a Core).

I presume you have the display set in Grid View like me. The screen on the right hand side of the grid is quite sensitive when selecting albums. Until this gets updated/fixed I am a little more careful about where on the album art I click. I aim to tap on the left of the cover when selecting an album from the right hand column and this avoids the jumping of the screen to a different position in the grid. Tapping on the RHS of the cover leads to the issue you mention.

Hope this helps.

CHRISH - Yes - I do use the Grid display on my android phone.  And since you mentioned it - tapping carefully on the left side of the album art avoids the problem.

DAVID - I thought my office wifi was good - but not sure how to measure that other than the bars on my phone.  Good point.

PCD - My new iphone se does perform significantly better than my ipad - which is three years old.

Thanks for the very helpful comments and replies.

I continue to have problems with the app freezing after not being used for more than a few minutes.  The latest glitch was only resolved when I reset the Core by hand.  The Core was playing but the app was not functional.  So after a typical album plays roughly 40 - 50% percent of the time the app is frozen.  Still not teenager-ready...

Ian, are you still in touch with Naim support?

I've flagged this for Phil to take a look at, but it as it's the weekend he may not be able to get on it until next week.

Hi Ian,

As this is an issue that isn't being widely reported then I think it would be a good idea to get your unit back to your dealer and onto their network to see if the issue can be recreated there - it sounds like it happens fairly quickly so should be easy enough to prove out one way or the other plus of course the dealer should also have a portable device that they can use to test with too.
