Asset UPNP with Naim App and tagging Questions
Posted by: dikkiedirk on 25 September 2017
I run Asset UPNP 6 in a Windows Server. All works well, mostly. I have a problem with compilation albums where every track has a different artist. When I only set ALBUM ARTIST or ALBUMARTIST to Various or VA or whatever on every track and the COMPILATION tag to 1 the artists on the album all show up under the Artist list in the Naim App with one track.
Is it possible to configure the App or Asset UPNP in a way that this doesn't happen and the compilation album shows under Various Artists?
If you search by album you will see the whole album under its title. If you search by artist/album you will see just their tracks. I’ve just got used to it.
There may be a way to add album artist to the Asset browse tree but I’ve not tried to do it.
Have you considered just using the Compilation Browse view which was introduced into the Browse Tree options in R6 of Asset ?

No, I have not yet. Do you use R6 in Windows? Where is this option hidden? Are there settings that make Asset work even better with the Naim app? Should I add a container under Compilation? If so, which one?
I'm using R6 on a QNAP TS451 NAS. However, if you click on the "Edit Advanced Settings" button in the Windows R6 version you will see the Browse Tree on the Left Hand side. If you open the "Additional" group you should see the Compilations option. It should have "Album" listed as a subcategory and leave "No Track listing" unticked.
Yes i saw it, but what should I do with it? Album is listed underneath, should I add Artist or something else too?
Hi Dikkie,
I thought you just wanted to see all the tracks on a compilation album without them being further split by artist. If that's the case, then you don't need to add a further "artist" subdivision.
I have added Album Artist / Album to my browse tree, it's the main way I access my tunes. You have to add it in manually though, it's not there by default unless you browse under Advanced Search.
You need to add 2 entries.
1. Album Artist / Album: Options A-Z No Track List checked
2. +\Album: Options A-Z No Track List Unchecked
These are as seen in the QNAP version, I know the WIndows version uses similar terminology so you should be able to work it it from above.
For compilations I set the Album Artist tag to 'Various Artists' and leave the Artist tag as is. You can then browse by Album Artist and see your compilations all in one place under 'Various Artists' but it also allows you to search for the Artist in the Artist tree to locate albums where that Artist appears.
Not quite on topic but if you update to the latest version of Asset UPNP for QNAP will your current settings be saved or will you have to redo the whole "tree"
thx
I seem to recall having to redo the Browse Tree when installing the beta version of R6 which might be because some of the Browse options had changed e.g. the new "Additional" category being introduced.
Incidentally, there is an option to "Edit Browse Tree as plain text" which will bring up a dialog box with the tree in text format which you could copy and save as a text file as reference or to copy and paste into the config when you update your version of Asset.
great thanks

Should this be applied in the root of the Browse Tree or under Compilation? My original question was about Compilation Albums.
Apply it to the root, then you can browse by Album Artist and go to Various Artists to see your compilations.
What program do you use for tagging purposes?
DBPoweramp has a check box for compilation discs, check it and it adds that tag to the album and each track. Compilations are then displayed in the correct order.
I also use a free Tagging programme (MP3 Tag) which woks for flac and wav files. Leave album title blank, insert =1 in compilation tag and again the albums / tracks are correctly tagged. Works in my AssetNas unit through to my nd5xs streamer. DBPoweramp also have a programme called perfect tunes, which is another excellent tagging solution.

what tag is dbpoweramp adding, ist compilation = 1? i have many cds ripped by myself without using dbpoweramp. i have no intention to rip them again with dbpoweramps ripper. the tag en rename program will also add the compilation tag and set it to 1.
DBpoweramp works for me in an asset nas system as does MP3 tag,
a free programme, can bulk scan all your compilations / various artists and correct in one go.

If you use mp3tag you can simply add the compilation tag to your compilation albums by highlighting all the tracks and pressing Alt + T for Exrended Tags option. From the icons on the right select Add a New Tag and Type Compilation in the Tag Field box and 1 in the Tag value box then Save.
Why does an album with the title The Pop Years show up under Album-All Albums but NOT under Album-T in the Naim App?
Look under album P. You may have set it to put the 'the' at the end.

Where can you set that? I don't recall ever changing it.
And yes, they appear P .
It's one of the options in Asset. The first under 'General Settings'.
