Anyone ever experienced electrostatic shock from NAC552 case...?

Posted by: ken c on 27 September 2017

had a frightening experience a few months ago when i experienced a huge shock when the 552 discharged the electrostatic buildup on its case -- all the buttons on the 552 panel lit up -- no sound. Power cycle -- and then the lights were normal again.

has anyone else ever experienced this? did you find the cause? how did you fix it? etc etc...

Blimey! I was considering a Lycra onesie. No chance after reading this!

You could borrow Tony's just to check the results (electrically) aren't too shocking.

What Mrs B would think though....

Mrs B is a very understanding woman, but she has her limits which the Lycra onesie could test. Funny, there is no mention of Lycra onesies on the GQ website. Maybe they have had their time. Tony, where do you buy yours?

I am sure this problem can be solved if owners are told to play this track before each listening session:

I certainly hope Mr Hammer doesn't own a 552. Although he himself is not wearing Lycra in the video, most of the female dancers seem to be writhing furiously around him, clad head to toe in Lycra. Add to this that stationary foot-sliding dance thing Mr Hammer seems so keen on, the potential for the build up of a significant static charge should at least be looked at by the Health and Safety boys. I would personally suggest that Mr Hammer might consider dancing in welly boots to reduce the danger. Or would that increase the danger? Many years have passed since my O level Physics.

It is possible of course that Mr Hammer has installed a discharge mechanism in this baggy pants (that is electrical rather than bodily discharge you understand). If so, this would allow him to do all those sliding dance moves without fear of spontaneously combusting. It would also allow him to move with the times and get into some Lycra, although I accept the discharge mechanism might be more difficult to conceal in Lycra.

All this is of course is conjecture on my part but thanks to Claus for raising such an electrifying topic.

I have developed the habit of touching the top spike socket of the Fraim before any 552 controls.   I figured the Fraim spikes reach down to the floor (earth) and are a cheaper option when it comes to discharging myself than the 552 is.   This 'behaviour' is a direct result of several eye watering discharges when adjusting the volume on my 552 in the early days of ownership.

I'm still not sure where the charge builds - we have a carpeted room, I wear a wool cardigan and M&S lycra undies on a warm day... if this mind's eye picture distresses you then you will understand why SWMBO rarely ventures into my listening room when the music is playing.

This is exactly what I do also to prevent getting a belt off the 552. Seems to work and has become second nature.

Quick war story involving an ES discharge.

Years ago I was in a team negotiating a tax stability agreement with a government of a smallish country. My employer wanted to invest billions of dollars in a large mining project, and wanted some assurance that the investment was not subject to undue sovereign risk. Anyway, at one meeting the minister for mines was lecturing us on how we "westerners" were not going to get away with exploiting his country etc. He was giving us a hell of a dressing down, setting the scene for some tough negotiating. Hevery theatrically paced back and forward for some minutes, pounding his fist into his palm, pointing at us, yelling at us, and telling us exactly how it would be. We were suitably contrite and listened patiently. At one stage he wandered to the corner of the room and went to lean on an air-conditioning unit there. I swear the spark that jumped across was a metre long. It certainly changed the mood. All that were present, including the "zapee" laughed long and loud. I guess the contractor who laid the carpet at the parliament building was paid for wool, laid nylon and pocketed the difference.

I've noticed this with iphones and ipads etc, when they're on charge if you run your finger along the rear (oo err) you'll feel it almost vibrating from the electrical charge passing into the device.  Odd.

Glad to hear that the mighty active 'set' is sorted; back up and running and singing again Ken.

Enjoy - at the risk of stealing your sign-off salutation.

Note to self: always use the remote control and don't touch any of the buttons, even the mute when turning vinyl.
