Uniti Nova technical questions

Posted by: debaard on 28 September 2017

dear Naim Support and/or forum members,

being the happy new owner of a lovely Uniti Nova, I am still hoping to figure out some technical points to determine a best use-case. would you be able to answer these questions for me?

(1) does Airplay streaming on the Nova entail downsampling (e.g., to 16bit/44.1kHz?) or entail other obvious downsides with respect to audio quality (not including wifi issues)?

(2) does WiFi connectivity as opposed to Ethernet connectivity entail downsampling or otherwise affect audio quality (not including wifi issues)? E.g., does the Nova compensate for possibly limited bandwidth or fluctuations therein in a manner that affects audio quality?

(3) the specified maximum 'music sample rates' are slightly lower than those listed under 'supported audio formats', e.g., ALAC is supported up to 24/384K, whereas the maximum specified music sample rates for ALAC are 24/96K. Am I correct in assuming that if an audio file with a sampling rate beyond the max specifications is offered, that it will be downsampled to the specified maximums automatically?

(4) i am not clear on this sentence in the FAQ, could you possibly elaborate somewhat?

"High Res Streaming
Up to 6 x 32bit / 384kHz or 10 x 16bit / 44kHz on above formats."
(are we talking about internet streaming services or local-network streaming, what does the 'or' depend on, what does the 'up to 6x / 10x...' refer to?)

many many thanks for thinking along!

1) AirPlay is always limited to 24/41.1 and 24/48 (maybe 16bit not 24bit can’t remember)... it’s an Apple limitation not Naim.

2) WiFi doesn’t affect the bit rates supported, but higher bit rates are not recommended due to unreliability of WiFi.

3) The contradiction is probably a typo

4) I believe refers to using a Nova as a server to stream to other (UPnP) streamers

PS. On a completely random observation... did you know Naim Nova is an Albanian director, producer and former actor...
