i pad UPnP settings question

Posted by: Odd Time Jon on 28 September 2017

Hi all

I have an Sony Xperia Z1 Compact and despite everything I have read about the android app not being as stable (maybe?) as the iOS app, it seems to be working fairly well for me.  In the inputs settings for my NAC 272 under UPnP I had to check the box "UPnP compatibility mode" to make the folders that are on my Synology DS216 NAS show up.

I then went to set up the latest iOS app version on our i Pad (I am an android man but we happen to have a shared i Pad!) and without checking the UPnP compatibility mode  box it recognised my DS216 but when I clicked on it to view the music folders, it just hung and hung with a constant spinning circle in the middle of the screen.  No folders came up.  Then I thought I'd check the UPnP compatibility mode box, but an message saying "Enabling UPnP compatibility mode uses a slower UPnP user interface without play queue or playlist support.  The settings menu will be cleared when this settings is changed.  Do you wish to continue?"  Does anyone know what this means?  The fact is that despite this message, I had to enable the compatibility mode (as I had on my Android) to make all my music folders on the NAS appear.   And ten the app works pretty well (so far!).  Am I losing out on any functionality by checking the UpnP compatibility mode box?  I can see playlist folders etc (even though I haven't created playlists to date).

For info, all my network is ethernet wired.  Thanks in advance.

Hi again Jon,  I guess I need to apologise to David;  I've been in a bad place over the last week, lost sleep/days leading up to & finally today the passing of my mother,   I should has just left the laptop closed, my bad, but moving on.

This is so frustrating for me because I've installed a number of Synology's for people & have never had issues,  so this is new territory for me & more frustrating as I can't get my hands & eyes on the problem.    Yes its clear the DSM has not installed correctly or at least not installed in part(s).   I'm not sure how you get out of this other than follow the screen prompts that you've seen &  "install Synology Assistant to help complete the installation of DSM" which I believe is a step by step process.  On the odd rare occasion I've needed to use the 'help' functions, they do seem to be effective so have confidence & best of luck.      The fact that you have a web page & you can log in & see the DSM means it knows you are there.

From what you say it seems you are OK with DHCP, so good to go.

I am so sorry to hear your news Mike and the tough time you've been having. My problem is the last thing you should probably be dealing with. I know how difficult it can be to stay off line though. And it is really hard for you not being able to see the problem.

i can't exactly remember the sequence of events when I first set up the NAS but I recall it went pretty smoothly, finding it on the network  etc. I think it might only be on some occasions, when I go into find.synology, that the message comes up saying it can't be found. I will try a few more times but am out tonight. It's probably worth restating that my original post was purely about the Naim App. It sees the 272 under rooms but wIth compatibility box not checked, although I see the DS216 on the network as a blue box after clicking the UPnP icon in the app, I cannot load my music files when I then click on DS216. But as soon as I check the compatibility box, everything automatically appears and works, at least for me at the moment (without playlist etc functionality apparently). So surely I do have a functioning NAS (fully? Maybe not in terms of the interaction with the naim App?). I have seen comments in the DS216 UI stating that it is working properly etc. and no reported problems, although last night it was flagging that an update needed to be installed and so maybe I should do that.

Is it worth sending a ticket to synology?

Hi Jon,  the update released on 1/10/17 is 6.1.3-15152-6,  its just a security fix/patch & nothing to do with your problem.  But yes go ahead & install it.

I am not yet convinced the DSM is setup correctly  (re my post 1/10/17)  comparing my Synology settings vs yours:     Control Panel > Network > General  -&-  Control Panel > Network > Network Interface  ....  LAN = Connected  .... My LAN shows 'Connected'   you said yours shows its not connected,  that is a problem & we need to drill down on that.

If you are agreeable I can send you a string of .jpg screen shots of my DSM settings over e-mail,  this might be a way for you to compare visually rather than a lot of words & potential misunderstandings.    Let me know.

Hi Jon, I have looked at the Control Panel > Network > Network Interface  page, and in my case it also shows LAN = Connected.

Mike I think you're right, that's a very strong indicator of the problem.

Jon,  I need one thing confirmed, have you got DNS server configured ??      Go to Control Panel > Network > General  ....  do you have entries in Server Name (your NAS name),  Default gateway  (your broadband hub IP address),   Manually configure DNS server   (your broadband hub IP address)

OK back on line.

Mike - I would be very happy and very grateful to you if you do email me some screenshots thanks .  Firstly though some answers to your questions above.

  1. I can still get into the DS216 interface by double clicking in the DS216 device shown under "Network"/"Other Devices" in windows explorer, and from there go into control panel, file station etc.  But when I type find.synology.com into my web browser it comes up with the blue web assistant screen saying No Diskstation found within LAN, and prompts me to install Synology Assistant to complete installation of DSM.
  2. When I said that LAN was disabled (my posts on 1st and 2nd October) you'll see I was referring to the Control Panel >DCHP server section (which is not enabled and which says LAN disabled)  and not the Control Panel > Network > General section, as mentioned before, where I do have all the entries to which you refer above (i.e. NAS name, broadband hub IP address etc).

  3. I have today installed the patch update and as a result it says DSM version  DSM 6.1.3-15152 Update 6

Oh and I have never tried to use the Android and iOS app simultaneously.

OK Jon I will get going on that tomorrow,  but I'm needed to go on a hunter gathering expedition so it might not be until a day or so.

Please let me have your e-mail address on a single line post,   spell out the words -at- & -dot-   & whan I've grabbed it I'll let you know then you must delete that post

Do you read ,pdf files, ??   Its better (stable pic & word location) to convert to .pdf for transmitting.

The 'normal' way to open your Synology webpage is via URL of your Synology's IP address followed by :5000/index.cgi    e.g.  http://192.168.1.7:5000/index.cgi

Wow that sounds amazing Mike.  No worries about time and understood about the email address etc.  Will do in a moment.

Yes I read pdf files and can convert to pdf.

Using exactly the URL (followed by :5000) that you state above is indeed the way that I am able to open up the login page for my DS216 and then go in.  But the find.synology.com URL doesn't find it although I am sure in the past it sometimes did.  I seem to remember it being a bit hit and miss though.

Thanks again
