Dedicated Mains Spur

Posted by: Blackmorec on 12 October 2017

Much discussed topic, I have recently upgraded the mains spur for my hi-fi room, changing both the cable and the wall sockets. The difference it made was not subtle. Anyone who is suffering from grainy or harsh sound should IMHO look at their mains supply before changing or upgrading other aspects of their system.

I spent quite a bit on money on this latest upgrade but I’m absolutely certain that the same amount of money spent elsewhere in my system would not bring anything like the same degree of fundamental improvement.

My latest mains supply comprises the following:

The first thing you notice is how tightly the wall socket grips the plugs...the next is the huge improvement wrought even before any burn-in. Depth, focus, purity, grainlessness, intensity, impact, detail, dynamics and micro-dynamics, naturalness, transparency. I’ve yet to buy any new component that brings so many fundamental, across the board improvements.  I  believe that conductor composition is far, far more important than gauge. The cable I had installed is rated 50A....more than enough for any hi-fi. Bog standard T&E, even in heavier gauges will not give you anything like the same results....again IMHO (and my experience).

Happy it's worked out so well for you.

I suppose much depends on where you live, ect ect

In my own case, my Son in law fitted my dedicated supply, and I would put it in the bracket of a black box upgrade, it makes such a difference, just as you have so eloquently described....

Very true! I had heard of the benefits of a dedicated supply but I was quite surprised to hear the difference. I found the size of cable made quite a difference too. I’m using standard twin and earth and when my system was on the long wall, firing across the room, I preferred 6mm. It sounded very well balanced to me. The bass with 10mm was boomy to my ears. Now my system is on the sort wall firing down the length of the room, 10mm sounds better. It’s deeper, smoother and a more enjoyable listen. A lot has to do with the room I’m sure.

Looks very interesting as I'm looking to do an almost identical install in my new home.  Could I ask what consumer unit you fitted the AHP Klangmodul fuse holders into?

Documented before but arguably the best upgrade I have ever done.
