Album track sequence

Posted by: Dazzer on 13 October 2017

I'm new to Mu-so and to streaming (yeah, OK, I'm old!). I've successfully managed to play albums via my Mu-so Qb's that were ripped onto my desktop PC's hard drive using dBpoweramp to create FLAC files. The tracks are faithfully listed in order in dBpoweramp itself and subsequently in Windows Media Player. Indeed, they also then appear in their original sequence in Windows Explorer. But on the Naim app they stubbornly appear, and play, in alphabetical order. This is frustrating, particularly on "concept" albums or soundtracks where the track sequence is important.

I've read threads on the forum that talk about similar issues on other UpnP devices. Any suggestions as to how to overcome my specific issue using the PC hard drive? I'm no expert on metadata etc., but if that's the problem any advice on how to fix it would be very helpful. Thanks.

The issue is not the metadata, but rather the UPnP server, which one are you using?

I'm simply using my desktop PC, connected to the same network as the Mu-so Qbs. Connection OK. Qbs play the tracks OK , but alphabetically only. Windows Media Player plays them in the correct, original sequence.

Are you using a 'folder' view rather than a tag view? Some UPnP servers allow both, but tag view is what you want, and hopefully, this should show the correct order.

Try putting Asset on your pc. Or getting a Qnap nas, and putting it on that.

You might also want to configure dBpoweramp so that it automatically adds the track No. to the individual track filenames when it rips your CDs.

Thanks all. Don't know what "Asset"  for PC is. Is it a bit of downloadable software? Sjbabbey: do yo know how to configure dBpoweramp in the way you suggest?

It's strange that Windows Explorer and Window Media Player both show the tracks in the correct sequence, displaying the individual (correct) track numbers. It's as if the Naim app is sorting the data alphabetically. But IF it is, I can't find how to alter it.

Asset is a server developed by the same people as dbPoweramp, and MrSpoon who posted above is the main man there, so you should listen to him.

If the tracks are listed by default in Explorer then you do not need to change the naming in CD Ripper, it already has the track number first.

Dazzer,

In the bottom left corner of dBpoweramp you will see a profile/configuration panel. In the box titled "Naming" you should have the naming structure for how your files will be named e.g.

"[IFVALUE]album artist,[album artist],[IFCOMP]Various Artists[][IF!COMP][artist][][]\[album]\[track] - [title]"

the very last part i.e. "[track] - [title]" is the important bit. This ensures that the track number will be part of the filename and that the files will be sorted in numeric/alpha order in windows and therefore in the correct tracklisting order.

I don't know whether you have customised your folders' properties e.g. for music files (which show the tag data e.g. title, track number etc.) as opposed to the default general items format (i.e. filename, file type, size and date). If so, this might explain why the files might seem to be in the correct order in Windows Explorer (assuming you've sorted/ordered the files by track number) whereas they are being played in filename order.

I should have added that you should ensure that the track field is set to 2 digits (otherwise track 11 will be shown after track 1).

To set this, click on the "Options" button (the button not the little arrow next to it) and scroll down to the Meta Data Section. Click on Meta Data & ID Tag "Options" button then scroll down to and tick the box named "Pack track number to 2 digits (eg 02)"

Again, thanks to all for the help and advice to date..

I've checked everything that you mention, sjbabbey, and it all seems to be in order. Many thanks. I note mrspoon's comment which implies (authoritatively, thanks to chrissu's recommendation) that, as the tracks are listed correctly in Explorer, the CDRipper's file-naming is working OK. Although all this again makes me wonder if the problem is in the Naim App,  that theory is discredited somewhat by the fact that no-one else appears to have the identical problem. Surely, I couldn't be the first.

Mmmm. I'll keep looking/trying. Any more thoughts/ideas anyone?

As I said above, try putting Asset on your PC. You can download a 30 day trial version for free. If you search for ‘Asset upnp server’ you will find it.

Thanks hungryhalibut. I've found the website and will take a look at it today.

Let us know how you get on. Hopefully it will sort out the problem - dbpoweramp and Asset are literally made for each other.

hungryhalibut: Well, well - Asset has indeed sorted it (no pun intended). I installed Asset, linked to it in the Naim app and, abracadabra, all the album tracks were listed in their correct sequence (whilst still listed alphabetically-only via the Desktop PC UPnP. server). I don't understand what's happened or why - I'm sure you/someone knows the technical reason for this. But for me, I'm just happy that it seems to have solved the problem. You're a star - very many thanks.

That’s great. You must be relieved to be able to play your albums in the right order!
