Windows 10 rev1709
Posted by: Mike-B on 18 October 2017
The so called "Fall" feature update to Windows 10 version 1709 has arrived. Its a big one & its long install. Maybe best to leave it until you don't need your Laptop/PC such as overnight. As for me, I pressed the go button & now all all I can do is wait.
Please let us know if it works afterwards.
Or whether you get blue screen. Black screen. Wake up from sleep problems. Random crashing. Loss of start menu. Loss of access to Store. Loss of icons on Desktop...Have I missed anything?
Cheers...

............ are you hinting all these come with this new 1709 revision ???? or is it something you've had with the current 1706 rev
I have just spent the best part of today reverting back to windows 7 on my laptop as I cannot suffer window 10 anymore. i now think windows 7 is wonderful, my laptop is back to a reasonable speed and life is so much easier.
Good luck with the latest version of Windows 10.
Both of my systems updated in the last week or so (from 1703 - there wasn't a 1706).
Everything works.
Download to both took about 30 mins. Upgrade took about 30 mins. (so 30 mins unable to use).
Thats a shame KenD, Win-10 has been faultless for me. OK I've turned a lot of the unwanted (by me) media twitface fluffy stuff off, but that does not prevent it working as you seem to be describing. I guess its down to processor features, speed & memory.

... oh yes there was Version 1706 (Build 8229.2041)
Well, that just demonstrates how consistent Windows 10 is!
(Actually I don't have any problem with it on my laptop, but it consistently blue-screens my desktop soon after starting the updates - it does a mandatory update to the NIC driver, replacing the correct and stable Atheros driver with an 'improved' Microsoft driver causes a blue-screen on boot. As this is a Microsoft supplied device driver it's impossible to refuse the update, and it's not possible to permanently replace the defective driver even if you start it in safe mode - the next restart with updates enabled puts the defective driver back in.)

No. That was Office 365.

Windows 10 has been relatively faultless for me as well on both my high spec desktop and (by now) low spec laptop.
My one issue has been that a Windows update appeared to wipe my Internet favourites in Microsoft Edge beyond restoration. Strangely, the problem did not occur on my laptop, which unfortunately had only a very small subset of my PC located favourites. Not good, but I have learned my lesson and will now ensure that I backup my favourites regularly to a remote (on my network) location.

1706 was what I had & I don't have Office
I've been on 1709 for about 3 weeks now as I'm on the insider build preview. It's as stable as anything on both laptop and desktop. Talking about processor speed and memory etc, the desktop is a ten year old Dell with an AMD Athlon Dual Core 3600+ and runs Win 10 just fine. It was a slow XP desktop until a couple of years ago but Win 10 revived it and it's now in daily use. Also, it's worth checking your privacy settings after an update as Microsoft have been known to reset them.

And I have a pet unicorn.
Seriously though, do some research and provide a link or two

You must be very special.
Warning.
I've just had the Update below and it gave me the Blue Screen of Death for many minutes post Start - I just left the lap top alone. Thankfully, it seems to have loaded OK (seems to have massive list of bug fixes?).
2017-10 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1703 for x64-based Systems (KB4041676)
Hello Happy
That is the October fix pack for the 1703 release. I only put it on one of my machines and it did seem to be quite buggy - machine would kind of hang - would do some things but not others.
But the 1709 release seems stable - although there has already been a fix release for it. (taking the point release from 15 to 19)
Different people get different access to the build server. You can get daily builds internally, for example
Similarly with Naim.

1706 is also an update of System Centre Configuration Manager.
Any Win10 installs installed via the ADK, may get updated to 1706; as may any individual installs where any component in the SCCM has been installed manually for any reason.
It's possible to get 1706 via these routes, but it's not guaranteed - it depends on the exact configuration of the OS.

Sorry for the late reply. I was running on a Toshiba ultra book with i5 quad core processor, 6GB of memory and 128GB ssd. I had many instances of lock up and also a reduce download speed from the internet of about 75%. Since going back to windows 7 everything is wonderful, I had removed a lot of the non essential software supplied with windows 10 but with my limited knowledge i could not resolve the issues. The slow internet speed is well documented and is down to microsoft being a little bit naughty.
We also use windows 10, and indeed I run Windows 10 on my Mac, and it works a dream... I don’t think I have ever had any issues with internet or TCP/IP throughput and not once has it crashed... all in all more reliable than OSX in my opinion at this time which I also use a lot...
i suggest if you have crashes, especially with blue screen of death, you should seek redress from your hardware supplier, as almost certainly they will have issues with their drivers, which if so there is not much the OS can do about... apart from disabling hardware features.

Both my laptop and desktop have had large automatic updates in the past 2 days but they are still both showing Windows 10 version as 1703 - not that I'm that bothered.
I agree with Simon about Windows 10 - best ever version and rock solid!

Your spec's are remarkably similar to mine; Dell Quad core i5 CPU & 8GB RAM (1TB SSD buts nothing to do with it). Not sure what you mean about internet speed slow & it's down to MS. I get the 76Mb/s service I pay for via the Dell's installed Intel Dual Band & that has little to do with MS other than than integrating with it.
I suspect the answer is contained in Simon's post
Just updated the main PC. All well, except I lost sound - the Soundblaster Z was operational and the latest drivers installed, so I re-installed those latest drivers and the thing works again. Hooray!
Have the update and had no issues with any installed programmes.
No significant problems with the update.
PC appeared to hang for a while with a black screen but sorted itself out.
iTunes needed reinstallation after updating Win10. No biggy.
