Blimey, the 272 is even better than I thought it was...

Posted by: hungryhalibut on 19 October 2017

I’ve been using my beloved 272 since June 2015, with the addition of an XPSDR in autumn that year. Yesterday I installed a brand new 555 PS DR, with a new S-XPS Burndy. Rather like when I bought the XPS two years ago I didn’t try the 555 first, and when I picked it up from the shop Dan from Naim was there for a Uniti open day. All Dan said was ‘you’ll love it, even straight out of the box’. And he was right, and then some. I thought the system was sounding great before, but the 555 has moved it to a different level. The music is so much more real, leaping out of the speakers in a much more lifelike way. Everything is clearer, so you get more into the music. The speakers sound a lot bigger too, which I imagine is the impact of the power supply on the preamp. Five hours later to was sounding better still, and of course things will improve further over the coming weeks.

It’s bloody expensive, it weighs a ton, but blimey it’s good. The idea of a £6,500 power supply on a £3,500 streaming preamp is perhaps bit odd, but the combination is just incredible. I know there are a few others using this combination, and that they have said how much better the 555 makes the 272, and perhaps I underestimated how much difference it would make: now I have one at home I am very much over rather than underwhelmed, which is always good.

So long as I can have a quiet room for 30 minutes sleep, I’m in. With my zippy new car it’ll be less of a challenge.

If there's a forum get together, how wide is the invitation?  I realise I'm a newcomer here and certainly don't expect an invitation.  If one is offered I'd be delighted to accept (and that'll give you a surprise!).

I’d be happy to host, so long as you are happy to travel to sunny Emsworth. Or happy to travel to M40, so long as I can have a sleep before returning home. I’d rather people came here though.

Hi FatCat,  the standard Naim internal power system provides three voltages of 10v, 15v & 22v.   The XPS powers the same internal circuits from separate independent regulators & the three voltages each become dual rail  (effectively six but with a difference)   The two 15v rails are a simple +15v/0v.  The 10v & 22v rails are asymmetric - this means dual polarity - positive and negative on either side of a common 0v.   So we have 2x +15/0v &  +/-10/0v  &  +/-22/0v..   Finally there is a case GND (Earth) that connects the player to mains earth.

.......................................................

The +/- 22v and +/- 10v regs aren’t a problem, only the 15v regs (supplying the digital circuits) are a problem in the olive xps. They overheat due to the high voltage drop (25v) and the higher current demand of the 272. They don’t overheat in the XPS2 because the voltage drop is less.

Perhaps Naim could host, hint, hint, would love to meet everyone and have a listen in the Naim demo room and a tour? Just a suggestion

Posted on: 09 November 2017 by Huge

Salisbury's even easier for me than Emsworth, but that would mean HH having to travel.

Posted on: 09 November 2017 by Gazza

I am sure one of us could pick H H up, I would volunteer.

I think Naim should host and put HungryHalibut up over night in the swankiest hotel in Salisbury the amount of 555ps and 300DR's they are going to sell due to this thread.

I like to have a nap in the afternoon, can somebody pick me up from Wigan.

Posted on: 09 November 2017 by hungryhalibut

Hmm, Wigan is slightly off course. I’m very happy to do something in January, after the C word and when everything’s quiet. The SL leads should be run in by then. If anyone is up for it - Lindsay, Huge, Bob, Gazza, Mike, and I can contact Richard and Phil we would go for it. My e Mail is my Forum name at gmail. Hopefully the decorating will be done (ish) by January, so things won’t be quite so shabby. Or we could do the M40, though that’s a strange place I don’t understand.

I thinks this all kicked off with listening to Kudos S20  at a location a few miles from J10 M40

However in the spirit of a wider forum meet-up,  I'm OK for Elmswell or Salisbury if it can be arranged

As interest in a get together has suddenly grown from me going to Lindsay's, to a full on forum bash, it might be a little impractical to all descend on an individual's home. It would be great if Naim would host such a get together. As Nigel (HH) has volunteered to contact Naim, should he manage to get them to host this, I would certainly like to go and it appears several others would too. Gazza has also volunteered to pick HH up so he could attend.

I am still frustrated that I failed to meet any forumites at the Audio Show East because I didn't know what they looked like and there were no name badges. It would be great to have an opportunity to meet you all.

Thank you FatCat and Mike-B for your helpful responses.

HH - probably hard to answer, but do you have any comments on the running in of the NAP300 after DR upgrade.  I got mine back late Wednesday and like you have done other upgrades.  I've also for various reasons had only a couple of hours listening. Would like to have attended any gathering but rainy Lanarkshire is probably too far away!

Posted on: 10 November 2017 by Huge

If mine is anything to go by, HH's 300DR is still in the early stages of development - probably a toddler by now!

I got mine after it was DR upgraded, I didn't know it before and it was a huge upgrade step for me so I can't comment on the 300 to non run-in 300DR.

It improved a bit over the first hour or two then stabilised, but what I can say is that I never noticed it get any worse at any time during run in period.  About three months later I suddenly realised that it was noticeably improved (about 1/4 - 1/3 of a box upgrade's worth).  I think the improvement had been gradual so I hadn't noticed it happening until I played something where I noticed a part of the music I hadn't previously heard.  I then realised that the improvements were not just resolution, but all aspects of musicality - just 'more magic' from the box.

It’s had a few ups and downs but I don’t analyse it. As the 555 and the wires are running in at the same time I’ve no idea what is going on, but what I do know is that it sounds great, and much, much better than it did before.

I really enjoyed meeting some other forumites at the beta testers' factory visit - must be nearly a year ago now as I remember the lovely home made mince pies. I agree a meet up would be great and a factory visit would be ideal.

Due to distance issues it seems to me there would also be scope for smallish more regionalised gatherings;  for instance I believe there are quite a few of us in the Somerset/Bristol/Wiltshire area. One way to kick this off might be to have a gathering linked to the Bristol Show. It would not necessarily have to take place at the show itself (there wouldn't be room!) but somewhere in Bristol over the same period, which would offer the possibilty of Naim people such as Phil to join in if they wish. The drawback would be that there would be no opportunity to listen to each others' systems but maybe organising that could be facilitated face to face at the gathering?

Excellent idea I'm not far from you myself worth looking at nearer show time.

I’d be happy to have four or five people round to mine in January. It would give me an incentive to get the painting finished.

I'm in North Wiltshire, but don't have room to host a shindig at my house (and I'm too chaotic to organise it!).

I'm also up for a meeting around the time of the Bristol show.

(Pev, looking at your profile, your system looks to be rather an interesting combination !)

I'll arrange a small do - up to 4 first come first served - at my place in the NY.

I'm okay for a trip to HH's pad.   Bristol I don't do any more, Too crowded, rooms too small etc.

Regards,

Lindsay

Living in West Wales, I too would be interested in a Bristol event.

Posted on: 10 November 2017 by The Strat (Fender)

For the record I don't live at J10 on the M40 rather in the very pleasant market town of Buckingham some 7 miles east.

Regards,

Lindsay

As it is first come first served, I'll stick my name down for a visit to Lindsay's and/or a visit to Nigel's HH. I would like to meet you both and you both have systems and components I would like to get to know also! As it could be more than me, I will be flexible over the day/date.

Huge - you (and anyone else interested)  would be welcome to visit for a listen - I am on the A38 three miles south of Bristol Airport and mostly retired, so flexible about timing.

I suggested the Bristol Show because some of us wil be going anyway and if you (understandably) don't like shows then Bristol is still very easy to get to and has many other attractions to make it worth a trip. I'm sure there must be a suitable venue (not sure what "suitable" would involve yet) - ideally Naim could organise as they will be there in force (bit of a works outing I believe) but if not, I'm sure our collective wisdom could sort something out. Hopefully an @Naim will get their attention if they are among the few people not following this highly enjoyable thread.
