If I talked about my antiquated system I wouldn't get even enough views to fill up a tiny 727 jet..
Blimey, the 272 is even better than I thought it was...

I’ve been using my beloved 272 since June 2015, with the addition of an XPSDR in autumn that year. Yesterday I installed a brand new 555 PS DR, with a new S-XPS Burndy. Rather like when I bought the XPS two years ago I didn’t try the 555 first, and when I picked it up from the shop Dan from Naim was there for a Uniti open day. All Dan said was ‘you’ll love it, even straight out of the box’. And he was right, and then some. I thought the system was sounding great before, but the 555 has moved it to a different level. The music is so much more real, leaping out of the speakers in a much more lifelike way. Everything is clearer, so you get more into the music. The speakers sound a lot bigger too, which I imagine is the impact of the power supply on the preamp. Five hours later to was sounding better still, and of course things will improve further over the coming weeks.
It’s bloody expensive, it weighs a ton, but blimey it’s good. The idea of a £6,500 power supply on a £3,500 streaming preamp is perhaps bit odd, but the combination is just incredible. I know there are a few others using this combination, and that they have said how much better the 555 makes the 272, and perhaps I underestimated how much difference it would make: now I have one at home I am very much over rather than underwhelmed, which is always good.
I think compared with some of the personal references in this very enjoyable thread, yours was mild indeed!

Don't worry Totoro is quite benign, at least compared to my avatar - he attempted to commit an act of terrorism (and failed!).
On the other hand, it's also been said that Guy Fawkes was the only man ever to enter Parliament with honest intent!

Coming off at a service area for a burger only made things worse. So we got to a place where we agreed that one of us could play a CD track of their choice on the car stereo and then the other could do the same.
She chose something I have completely forgotten that lasted the usual 3 minutes or so and then I had my go and put on "Inside Out" the title track from an excellent Keith Jarrett album. It lasts 21 mins which I thought was a result, but she has regarded as unfair in a mild background sort of way ever since....

NottinghamIS in the South, isn't it ?
No fireplaces allowed in signal boxes south of Doncaster, so Nottingham must be in the South
Well it's north of Watford, so that's northern by my book!

When you start a thread with a BLIMEY all rules are off. It is mind boggling that a combo of a Blimey and a 272 could produce 15, 872 views and 577 replies (which are about to go up another notch the minute I click on the Reply).

Top end is sweeter and bass more refined, less cluttered. The whole sound is more detailed, smoother and silkier. I thought my system sounded pretty good without the XPS, but now I realise it was a tad coarse and unrefined in comparison.
Next is to upgrade the amp to a 250DR, then my upgrade itch will have been well and truy scratched.
Excellent hear your satisfied with the XPDDR.
The 250DR will stun you, its a leap forward. After the 250DR your next step is to avoid tbis forum as you will be considering a 300DR lol

Goodness me. The 272/XPS/250 is wonderful, and I lived with it more than happily for over two years. Anyone who thinks it’s inadequate needs their bumps feeling.

Perhaps it shows that some of the other threads aren’t that interesting, who knows. Feel free to start one and try to beat this one for views and replies.

Poor Totoro, how can you compare a mythical Japanese sprite to pregnant penguins? Where will it end?
We’ve been to the funeral of my lovely sister in law this afternoon, who died from dementia aged only 73. These things put stuff in perspective - we must enjoy life and if that means buying a bit of hifi just because one feels like it, then why not? Nobody should ever, ever feel that what they have is inadequate, or feel under any pressure to upgrade. But if you want to and have the spare cash, and it will make you happy, go for it. You might get mown down by a half blind 89 year old tomorrow, so got for what you want.

Indeed. Off to the funeral of a friend of ours tomorrow who, at 50, moved to rural Italy a couple of years ago to enjoy a good life, only to be diagnosed with lung cancer after a year.
She was a non-smoking healthy vegetarian and a true force of nature.
Sorry for your loss too HH.

My condolences to both Graeme and HH; reminds me why I switched to a 3 day week almost exactly 3 years ago to avoid the stresses which seemed to be causing my colleagues and friends of a similar age to retire early due to sickness plus 2 funerals of colleagues younger than me. Having the time to enjoy a great piece of music on equipment that brings genuine pleasure while appreciating a decent glass of wine does seem to be a good exchange. Now just got to finish digging the tunnel completely.... And if that means I keep the 200DR for longer - so be it! I have my 272 and XPSDR so I can enjoy SQ of a level I would not have imagined a few years ago,
My cousin in his 60s was fine on Saturday. He didn’t answer a call from his sister on Sunday. She was worried, called the police, they broke in and found him dead. We don’t know what happened yet. Life really is precarious. We must treasure it.
never a truer word; I have just lost two of my oldest friends within five days of each other after lengthy battles with cancer.....the reality of this & the adjustment has knocked me sideways. Seize the moment in every day, enjoy spending time with the people in your life and obviously immerse in the music on whatever medium you have - for me, the 272/555PS is immense.
My mother phoned me to say she was not feeling well on the 1st Oct. By the 5th she was told suspect lung/liver cancer and a week or so later we were told it was terminal. She died 1st November.
We did at least have some time to say our goodbyes. It does put things into perspective so perhaps having an empty shelf on your Fraim or the routing of your Powerline seems not so important now.

All .., my sincerest condolences and my thoughts are with you all. And thanks for sharing. We forget to often that good times or even poor times but still alive can quickly come to and end by either tragedies like divorce, redundancy or serious health issues or by our own death. So let’s remind ourselves and truly enjoy the wonders and black boxes of our lives.....
THEBIGFREDC and everyone else who has had a bereavement my condolences I too have had similar situation and on both occasions was later very pleased that the illness was not a long drawn out affair. We all have a different attitude to death and it brings out different emotions but I agree with the sentiments above life is indeed to short and to fragile as I approach 50 years I fully intend to spend less time working and worrying and more time living!
Thanks Bob and Burt.
I’m retiring at the end of the year and really looking forward to it. But equally I know some people who really want to carry on working until considerably later in life.
Each to make their own choices.

Yes. It's certainly a big benefit to be able to make the choice. The folk I feel sorry for are those forced to continue to work into their old age because they cannot afford to live on their State and (if they have one) private pension, and others who are forced to retire because their health no longer enables them to work. I know some will argue that too few people prepare early enough for their eventual retirement but many will feel that fate has removed any choice they might have had.
XPS-DR now fully settled in and, wow, what a transformation to the 272. I know this thread kicked off with HH ditching his XPS for a 555 but, pound for sound, I think adding the XPS has been extra-ordinary value for money, especially as mine was 'pre-loved'.

Oh stop it...again...please...I’m not listening. La la la la la.

Those who have not died of boredom may recall mention of a get together at Naim in the new year. I’ve mailed Trevor and he has asked what I’d be looking for. My idea is for a bit of social time, either at Naim or the pub, and time to discuss future directions - something a bit different to the usual factory tour. And a listen of course.
A number of you expressed an interest and I think those were:
Nigel B, Gazza, Huge, Lindsay, Simon B, Mike B
With me that’s seven, so a few more could be added I’m sure: the maximum for a visit is 12 I believe.
If anyone is interested and if there are any ideas as to what you’d like to do while there, please add your interest and ideas here, and I’ll get back to Trevor over the weekend. I’m sure someone at Naim could then sort out a date. I was thinking late January or early February.
Thanks.

I'd be very interested in coming along if possible. Nothing more than that suggested above but i'd like to visit the factory and put a few faces to names too.
