Blimey, the 272 is even better than I thought it was...

Posted by: hungryhalibut on 19 October 2017

I’ve been using my beloved 272 since June 2015, with the addition of an XPSDR in autumn that year. Yesterday I installed a brand new 555 PS DR, with a new S-XPS Burndy. Rather like when I bought the XPS two years ago I didn’t try the 555 first, and when I picked it up from the shop Dan from Naim was there for a Uniti open day. All Dan said was ‘you’ll love it, even straight out of the box’. And he was right, and then some. I thought the system was sounding great before, but the 555 has moved it to a different level. The music is so much more real, leaping out of the speakers in a much more lifelike way. Everything is clearer, so you get more into the music. The speakers sound a lot bigger too, which I imagine is the impact of the power supply on the preamp. Five hours later to was sounding better still, and of course things will improve further over the coming weeks.

It’s bloody expensive, it weighs a ton, but blimey it’s good. The idea of a £6,500 power supply on a £3,500 streaming preamp is perhaps bit odd, but the combination is just incredible. I know there are a few others using this combination, and that they have said how much better the 555 makes the 272, and perhaps I underestimated how much difference it would make: now I have one at home I am very much over rather than underwhelmed, which is always good.

I'm sure a factory tour would be welcome by those who had not been before.   Plus I would welcome a structured discussion to make up a two hour(ish) meeting on whatever any/all would like to include.  Keeping in mind some are not on the beta test team,   I'm sure all would benefit with some discussion on app & software problems that we have all experienced, especially with the new platform products;  so people from the R&D need to be included.   And yes 100% for a demo room listen.

I vote to avoid 'The Pub',  I love beer & I love most pubs (of the real ale type)  but I just hate going to pubs when I'm driving.  Naim canteen does a pretty good job.

And thanks Nigel for taking up the organising on this,  if you need a little helper,  just call.

Nigel

Thanks for the update.

I’d be very interested in making the trip to Naim HQ early 2018.  Please count me in.

Happy to offer a lift to others if reasonably within striking distance en route from N London.

Topic of interest to me at the moment is digital music and how best to integrate with my stereo having made a very half hearted attempt thus far!

Those who have not died of boredom may recall mention of a get together at Naim in the new year. I’ve mailed Trevor and he has asked what I’d be looking for. My idea is for a bit of social time, either at Naim or the pub, and time to discuss future directions - something a bit different to the usual factory tour. And a listen of course.

A number of you expressed an interest and I think those were:

Nigel B, Gazza, Huge, Lindsay, Simon B, Mike B

With me that’s seven, so a few more could be added I’m sure: the maximum for a visit is 12 I believe.

If anyone is interested and if there are any ideas as to what you’d like to do while there, please add your interest and ideas here, and I’ll get back to Trevor over the weekend. I’m sure someone at Naim could then sort out a date. I was thinking late January or early February.

Thanks.

Yes please HH if I can get down from Cheshire. Would be my first time to Salisbury so definitely appreciate the chance to learn more.

Thanks HH I think your ideas are spot on, we should not get into the usual forum arguments on speakers cables etc and try to get a “feel” on what they see the future, and our feedback. I had a Linn demo of their Katalyst system recently, not to my taste, but if you look at their website they are trying to recruit FPGA gate software experts( the Chord) way. Discussions like this would be inciteful.  Also their lovely speakers......I had SBL,s

I would intend to stay overnight, so my offer of collection and delivering you home, still stands. If you you have a more convenient offer, I will not be offended.

I would like to go, but living near Bristol I could easily attend a get together based around the Show in February and as I've had a factory visit just a year ago I would not want to squeeze out a more deserving person. Put me down as first reserve if there is room please.

I’d be interested if there is space.

Wonderful, I wasn’t sure anyone would see my post and I don’t have many people’s email addresses. I’ll let the numbers rise a bit and then let Trevor know.

Nigel - all else being = I’m good for it.  I’ve done the factory tour but I’m up for a discussion and of course listening session.

Lindsay

Nigel, I would be interested if there is space, it sounds like an interesting get together.

Yep, also interested.

Nigel, I have been following this thread with interest and would like to come along if places permit.

The Pub seems like a good idea as well as the factory tour and a listening session, especially if the listening sessions starts with your 272 set-up and moves upwards !!!!! (you'll be bankrupt, again, before the end of the tour ). We don't have to drink the pub dry, so MikeB shouldn't need to worry !

Cheers, Don

Me too, if there’s space. I’d be interested in hearing Statement in a proper setting...or would I?

HH - I am extremely interested in the visit, and anyone wishing a lift from Bournemouth general area welcome

HH, I’d be interested if any places still available?

Ok, that’s more than enough. The list is closed. I’ll stop there and work it all out with Trevor. Please don’t expect to hear anything for a while!! I may have to resort to the ‘anyone who likes prog or dislikes The Smiths’ sorting system.

I was just writing in an email to my friend Trickydickie that the new system is just so much better than the previous one. It’s just so much more musical, it’s like it isn’t there anymore. That may sound silly, but I can’t think of a better description.

I really like the idea of a demonstration that goes from 272/555/300 to NDS/552/500 to NDS/Statement. I’ve not heard Statement before to that would be really interesting, so long as Naim are willing to use decent speakers, and not Sopras.

I’m on the case.

Thank you Nigel.

I would like to reiterate my interest in the Naim visit. I did a factory tour a little while ago so not too bothered about that but would welcome a social session with forumites (down the pub or in the canteen, I'm easy) a listening session and discussion about where Naim see the future lies at the factory. But I don't want to impose, I would just really welcome a meet up with you guys and a blast in the Naim dem room.

BTW, I hate prog and love The Smiths - I assume that secures me a ticket.

Thank you Nigel for organising this.

Back to the subject in hand, I have organised a home demo of a 555DR to power my NDS to see what all the fuss is about.

Posted on: 22 November 2017 by hungryhalibut

You are already on the list. No more though. It’s like a Taylor Swift concert.

Posted on: 22 November 2017 by Gazza

Sounds a good plan...... every Naim external demo at the moment is Uniti based, your journey seems more appropriate for the Forum to my mind. Thanks for your efforts on this.

Perhaps I can be added as a reserve? I've owned Naim for more than 3 decades but never been to the factory. Had I not been tied up with work until just now I might have looked at the forum earlier this evening and got into the 'first team'!  I fully understand it's first come, first served and that there's a limit to the number that can be accommodated on the factory tour. C'est la vie!

Posted on: 22 November 2017 by hungryhalibut

This isn’t about a factory tour, rather something that came about because I invited people to my house and it then seemed that going to Naim was easier, better, more convenient or whatever. Please don’t anyone think that it’s a standard factory tour, should it ever happen. Standard factory tours can be arranged via your dealer. This is something different that I’m trying to sort out. There are already too many people and I’m not going to stress about it, or consider more requests. I’ll work out a list and people will hear in due course. Going by the speed of getting the new firmware out, that might mean you’ll hear in January ‘19.

This new setup is really annoying. I’ve bought six albums today.

I would suggest drawing straws or tickets of some sort would be the fairest way to work out who would go on this factory forum get together surely everyone who wants to go would agree this has to be the fairest way. But please be sure I'm not sticking my own name forward as I could't take the time off at the moment.

Anyone who doesn’t like The Smiths, has never been to Milano and who doesn’t own at least two pairs of Diesel jeans is out. Being a paid up member of the Labour Party will help, and being a vegetarian Guardian reader is always good.

Oh dear, might have to give my place up then.

Only kidding. Already mentioned I like The Smiths, been to Milan (on business if that counts), got diesel on my jeans, I own a red tie and last night my chips were wrapped in the Guardian. What are the chances?

Posted on: 22 November 2017 by Don Atkinson

I love our neighbours, ie The Smiths (Viv and Rhona), I used to visit Milan every time I went to La Spezia on Military Business, I have two diesel cars (my Jeans are therefore covered in diesel), I've worked all my life so must be a paid up member of some sort of working Party given all the tax i've paid (but not Jeremy's). However, I draw the line at being a vegetarian Guardian reader simply because i'm not very good at reading, but I do like vegetables, especially with roast beef. Looks like i'm in !

oops, just seen Nigel B's qualifications, looks like i'm out
