Blimey, the 272 is even better than I thought it was...

I’ve been using my beloved 272 since June 2015, with the addition of an XPSDR in autumn that year. Yesterday I installed a brand new 555 PS DR, with a new S-XPS Burndy. Rather like when I bought the XPS two years ago I didn’t try the 555 first, and when I picked it up from the shop Dan from Naim was there for a Uniti open day. All Dan said was ‘you’ll love it, even straight out of the box’. And he was right, and then some. I thought the system was sounding great before, but the 555 has moved it to a different level. The music is so much more real, leaping out of the speakers in a much more lifelike way. Everything is clearer, so you get more into the music. The speakers sound a lot bigger too, which I imagine is the impact of the power supply on the preamp. Five hours later to was sounding better still, and of course things will improve further over the coming weeks.
It’s bloody expensive, it weighs a ton, but blimey it’s good. The idea of a £6,500 power supply on a £3,500 streaming preamp is perhaps bit odd, but the combination is just incredible. I know there are a few others using this combination, and that they have said how much better the 555 makes the 272, and perhaps I underestimated how much difference it would make: now I have one at home I am very much over rather than underwhelmed, which is always good.

Is it still recommended to tighten the collars and then loosen a quarter of a turn? And any advice on distressing (the burndies that is) gratefully received.
Nigel, I think you may be confusing the locking collar rings - which should always be done up and never loosened unless the PSU is switched off and you're in the process of removing the Burndy lead - and the strain relief, which needs to allow a small mount of movement when the connector is twisted. If you don't know what you're doing then just leave well alone otherwise you could end up damaging the Burndy lead and facing a costly repair bill.

To be honest I'm not sure that I would recognise the Smiths if I heard them...
So let's put that down as agnostic..

You are someone in need of a visit to Emsworth.
That sounds suspiciously like an invitation HH! Thank you. My wife says I've got to finish the bathroom first...

Sometimes, often in fact, I wonder why we have replaced nine doors. That’s primer round the edges, two coats of undercoat, two coats of oil based eggshell.... It’s a bloody good thing I’ve retired. I’ve nearly finished two. We are doing our bathroom in February. I say ‘we’ but we are staying in a cottage in Yorkshire and leaving the builders the keys.
Try using water based paint rather than oil based. It will reduce the duration of work significantly. Farrow & Ball water based paint (eggshell) is of excellent quality and the finish is as good as the old oil based equivalent.

Is that the acrylic stuff? I've used that in past where I've needed very quick drying times (a dog in the house) but have always felt the finish disappointing compared to oil-based under-coat and gloss.
Ah, I’ve bought a vapour pot, used by all painters it seems. You just stick the brush in and get it out again the next day. You never need to clean them, it’s great. I might investigate the F&B though, thanks for the tip. I bet they don’t do boring brilliant white though. We always use F&B on the walls.
Apart from costing a relative fortune (ignoring hi-fi pricing levels of course!), the thing I found with Farrow & Ball paint is that it doesn't pong anywhere near as strongly as the Dulux gloss equivalent. That to me is a very real benefit.
Peter
No it’s not acrylic. Eggshell is a matt finish so completely different to gloss although F&B do a range of finishes in every colour including full gloss if that’s what you are after.
Thanks S3. I'll explore F&B.
By the way, HH, this thread of yours seems to have become a Padded Cell all of its own.
If you want brilliant white then go for F&B All White in exterior eggshell which is slightly harder wearing than its interior counterpart.

I think that’s the finish on my Proacs!

I’ve been listening to music all day on the new and improved system, while painting upstairs, other than when out for the daily constitutional and obligatory nap. Even using the old fashioned multiroom (turn it up and open the doors in need of paint) it’s sounding wonderful. But there are only so many ways to say that the 272/555/300 is a lot better than the 272/XPS/250 that preceded it.
Actually, I was reflecting while walking beside the sea in the sunshine earlier, how it’s just so incredibly musical, like I found the 552/300 setup to be, back in the day. I always said about that system that it lets the music flood out - the hifi equivalent of a Tetley tea bag, in a way that the 252/300 just didn’t. Well, the 272 setup does exactly the same. I play music and it’s just there in the room, totally natural and unignorable. I never thought I’d hear such a sound in my house again, but through a strange and unwanted twist of fate, I’ve got it back. And it’s fantastic.
See - hifi stuff.

Thanks S3. I've made a note of that. A fair bit of redecorating is in prospect

Good tip, thanks. I’m currently using Brewer’s own brand Albany paint, which is really cheap, and incredibly good.
As long as we're so far off topic we can't even see it from here I have to say as a Yank I've always admired how on your Brit TV shows and movies just how wonderful the painted doors, window and baseboard trims, etc. look; the way such items should look, IMO, and very seldom do here in the States.

See - hifi stuff.
But I thought it was meant to be the PG Tips pyramid bags which let the flavour flood out owing to the space in the bag.
See - tea stuff.
Thoroughly enjoying my new XPS-DR -> 272 combo. Just been listening to Diana Krall's Turn up the Quiet album. Oh my word, her rendition of Sway bowls me over.

Do you mean a Brush Mate? They are brilliant, I once forgot that I'd left a brush in mine, and when I discovered it a few months later, it was perfectly OK. You won't need one for F&B paint, though, as it is all water based.
Time for the Padded Cell I think. This thread has run its course, there’s a limit to how many times we need telling just how good the 272/555/300 combo is.

No, it was Tetley, with the 2,000 perforations in every bag, which let the flavour flood out.

That’s it, the Brush Mate. As you say, they are brilliant.

Tim, I’m not sure why you are so keen to have this moved to the Padded Cell. Surely that’s for the Moderator to decide. If you don’t like the thread, don’t read it. And I did say above that there are only so many ways to enthuse about the black boxes and that my ability to say it has run its course. I’ll endeavour to arrange the Naim trip then perhaps leave this thread to wither in the vine. I’ve rather enjoyed it though.

Thank you Timmo1341 and I wholeheartedly agree, apparently it is even comparable to both a 552 and a Tetley tea bag now.
Hungryhalibut posted:Those who have not died of boredom may recall mention of a get together at Naim in the new year. I’ve mailed Trevor and he has asked what I’d be looking for. My idea is for a bit of social time, either at Naim or the pub, and time to discuss future directions - something a bit different to the usual factory tour. And a listen of course.
A number of you expressed an interest and I think those were:
Nigel B, Gazza, Huge, Lindsay, Simon B, Mike B
With me that’s seven, so a few more could be added I’m sure: the maximum for a visit is 12 I believe.
If anyone is interested and if there are any ideas as to what you’d like to do while there, please add your interest and ideas here, and I’ll get back to Trevor over the weekend. I’m sure someone at Naim could then sort out a date. I was thinking late January or early February.
Thanks.
Yes, please - I thought I expressed interest earlier.
