Blimey, the 272 is even better than I thought it was...
Posted by: hungryhalibut on 19 October 2017
I’ve been using my beloved 272 since June 2015, with the addition of an XPSDR in autumn that year. Yesterday I installed a brand new 555 PS DR, with a new S-XPS Burndy. Rather like when I bought the XPS two years ago I didn’t try the 555 first, and when I picked it up from the shop Dan from Naim was there for a Uniti open day. All Dan said was ‘you’ll love it, even straight out of the box’. And he was right, and then some. I thought the system was sounding great before, but the 555 has moved it to a different level. The music is so much more real, leaping out of the speakers in a much more lifelike way. Everything is clearer, so you get more into the music. The speakers sound a lot bigger too, which I imagine is the impact of the power supply on the preamp. Five hours later to was sounding better still, and of course things will improve further over the coming weeks.
It’s bloody expensive, it weighs a ton, but blimey it’s good. The idea of a £6,500 power supply on a £3,500 streaming preamp is perhaps bit odd, but the combination is just incredible. I know there are a few others using this combination, and that they have said how much better the 555 makes the 272, and perhaps I underestimated how much difference it would make: now I have one at home I am very much over rather than underwhelmed, which is always good.

My idea is for a bit of social time, either at Naim or the pub, and time to discuss future directions - something a bit different to the usual factory tour. And a listen of course.
A number of you expressed an interest and I think those were:
Nigel B, Gazza, Huge, Lindsay, Simon B, Mike B
With me that’s seven, so a few more could be added I’m sure: the maximum for a visit is 12 I believe.
If anyone is interested and if there are any ideas as to what you’d like to do while there, please add your interest and ideas here, and I’ll get back to Trevor over the weekend. I’m sure someone at Naim could then sort out a date. I was thinking late January or early February.
Thanks.
Yes, please - I thought I expressed interest earlier.
Clive
No thanks I would rather stick pins in my eyes.
It's a bit of a rambling thread but what a mine of information. The Brush Mate is going to save me a lot of time
Keep it going chaps !
This thread has saved me from 'distressing' my new Burndies and subsequently blowing myself up from a loose fitting connections.
Well worth the read!
I have never understood why people complain about threads. It is not as if there is a shortage of other threads to read. Personally I quite like threads with twists and turns, occasionally leading to the bizarre.

Tim, I’m not sure why you are so keen to have this moved to the Padded Cell. Surely that’s for the Moderator to decide. If you don’t like the thread, don’t read it. And I did say above that there are only so many ways to enthuse about the black boxes and that my ability to say it has run its course. I’ll endeavour to arrange the Naim trip then perhaps leave this thread to wither in the vine. I’ve rather enjoyed it though.
Simply because it no longer has relevance to a Hi-Fi Corner thread. I can appreciate it’s diverse ramblings may be of interest / amusement to some, but in a place better suited to discussion of decorating / jollies etc.
Can’t be having one rule for some and one for the rest, don’t you know!

I don't seem to be on your list, although I think I was the first to suggest a meeting of Forumites at HQ a few pages back (page 11). So yes please for me. Please let me know when you have a date.

Absolutely, 100% couldn't have said it better myself.
I find reading the thread, irrelevancies and all, very enjoyable. Let the moderator decide, but I suspect it will, as HH states, wither on the vine of its own accord. I also think, that in my experience the "humble"272/555DR/250DR is a revelation, and it has cured me up upgradeitis for years to come, even with A5 cables!
By the way, my cat has polydactaly, as did our new Prime Minister JAcinda Aderns cat, sadly killed in a car accident. Very sad.

If I lived within reasonable reach I'd express an interest if Not displacing genuine Naimophiles, as it would be interesting to put some real characters to the online personas, and at the same time have a chance to discover more about Naim - maybe even find out if I like the Naim sound! However the practicality and cost probably rules it out until a few years time when I might live on the same island.
As for this thread, as with so many it makes for interesting reading.

We had a cat - Vinnie - who had the extra thumb. His party piece was grabbing flies out of the air.
I have an Italian friend - Vinnie - he refers to suppositories as innuendos.
One of our dogs is called Vinnie, he's a Lab/Pointer cross.
What a small world we live in.

Don't tempt me! Unfortunately 'Life On Mars' tactics would, I fear, be frowned upon today.
I'm now closing this thread, as requested by the OP.
