Blimey, the 272 is even better than I thought it was...

Posted by: hungryhalibut on 19 October 2017

I’ve been using my beloved 272 since June 2015, with the addition of an XPSDR in autumn that year. Yesterday I installed a brand new 555 PS DR, with a new S-XPS Burndy. Rather like when I bought the XPS two years ago I didn’t try the 555 first, and when I picked it up from the shop Dan from Naim was there for a Uniti open day. All Dan said was ‘you’ll love it, even straight out of the box’. And he was right, and then some. I thought the system was sounding great before, but the 555 has moved it to a different level. The music is so much more real, leaping out of the speakers in a much more lifelike way. Everything is clearer, so you get more into the music. The speakers sound a lot bigger too, which I imagine is the impact of the power supply on the preamp. Five hours later to was sounding better still, and of course things will improve further over the coming weeks.

It’s bloody expensive, it weighs a ton, but blimey it’s good. The idea of a £6,500 power supply on a £3,500 streaming preamp is perhaps bit odd, but the combination is just incredible. I know there are a few others using this combination, and that they have said how much better the 555 makes the 272, and perhaps I underestimated how much difference it would make: now I have one at home I am very much over rather than underwhelmed, which is always good.

Could it not be that HH's 'other half' (much nicer to refer to her as Hilary) is just as excited by the new acquisitions? Time to kick such gender based stereotyping into the long grass.

Stu

Thank you. I very deliberately said nothing, to avoid any ‘you don’t want to do this, you want to do that’ stuff. I do feel very fortunate: as well as still being alive I am now retired and can enjoy fantastic music at home. Things could be a lot worse.

At the end of the day everyone is happy

Naim the factory, the dealer, the customer (HH), the people which purchase the leftover kit at reduced prices, the people who didn't like to hear 3 box promotion, people who likes 4 box promotion, people who buys HH's kit in two years time or so at reduced prices. The SuperUniti promotion is long forgotten too I guess.

I'm sorry to hear about bad experience with the Planar, they are great decks but perhaps not quite up to 272/555 in all fairness

Regards

Mouthwash

why did you assume that HH will sell his kit in 2 years time? You got a crystal ball?

I think you completely fail to understand or the  context of HH recovery and his happiness of the PS555 (what it brings to the 272)

Why not simply congratulate him instead of the sarcasm about the Superuniti (for example)?

We are off to Milan next week. I hear it’s quite good for clothes shopping.

Tim, I like the sentiment but no, she is not as excited as I am. She can easily hear the difference but she simply doesn’t care about it. As we have always done we split our money down the middle, through good times and bad, so she gets precisely the same lump sum to spend as she wishes. She has mentioned a motorbike - she has a full bike licence - but since my accident it worries me. We’ll see.

First of all congrats to HH for the PS555 and for sharing with us that indeed it makes a difference to the 272.

As to why the PS555 sounds much better than XPS, it's very obvious when looking at the internal pictures, to me it is the best power supply that Naim make, better than Supercap !

I’m not convinced that looking at pictures can ever explain how things sound, but it certainly explains why it was so heavy when I was carrying it from the shop to the car.

Can't comment on other manufacturers, but internal pictures of Naim PSU leave some clues as to how they do what they do, musically and sound quality wise.

Obviously no-one is going to spend thousands of GBP on a PSU based on pictures...

well HH, my wife and daughter don't care about any improvement on my Naim system either..... it would be nice if they would share some small enthusiasm about it.....

Nigel- I have followed your Naim journey since I added to this forum in 2005. You have been learnable honest about each step you have done within Naim boxes, ups and downs and I felt quite comfortable settling with my/ your current setup. At the same time I saw this thread I must admit the PS itch to me. I of corse, have to deal with that.

During my last downgrade I sold the non DR 555 and some weeks later an almost new 2727250DR appeared and I could not resist buying them. I listened to the sensible side in me when XPSDR was added, even if I could afford the 555DR..... and that episode sums up my journey quite well.

I`m aware you`ve been into some kind of accident without knowing any details (personal) and I`m glad that both health and economics are sorted out as far as possible for you. From there and the full time retired situation, I fully understand your approach towards a even more enjoyable Naim system. That again makes me think of my own thoughts about retirement or even age and how short life is (I`m soon to be 55 yo). As long as one have the money and accepted prioritize within family, just go for it.

Best of luck to you Nigel!

Milan is lovely, however, I came back feeling  really ugly as the people there are so beautiful, stylish and cool!

Emjoy  your upgrades HH.

We found Milan a surprisingly easy place to get around on foot.

That way we stumbled upon some nice parks.

The San Siro museum and stadium visit was great.

There's a gallery with a couple of Carravaggio's including the Medussa.

The Alfa museum is open now I believe.

Well jel'.

Steiner, there is a thread in the padded cell somewhere, but briefly, and I’ve no intention of droning on about my accident here, I was knocked off my bike by a half blind 89 year old, ended up in intensive care with two skull fractures, in a coma and on life support, and was expected to die. Hilary and my elder son were taken to the hospital in a police car with flashing lights so that they could say goodbye.

But I’m still here!! I have a frontal lobe brain injury that has stopped me from working as my executive functions are impaired but hey, it could be worse. I’m so lucky to be alive, and now have the attitude that life is for living. Bring on that 300!

Nice ideas, thanks. We have tickets for La Scala, so I’ve been dieting so that I look ok in my suit, which I’ve not worn for over a year. We love the opera, though I’m sure we will be under dressed, as it’s the first night. O well.

I always suspected you would move on the 555PS so am pleased to learn that you're impressed with it.  Didn't expect a 300DR to follow but that will impress, too.  At that point your system is pretty much done, isn't it?

Oh, and enjoy you retirement, Nigel.  A much bigger and more profound step in life than any hi-fi stuff but I'm sure getting that decision settled will help you enjoy the new system all the more.

First of all, wishing you all the best HH as you move towards a better place in every sense and thanks for sharing with us. Just had a torn retina repaired and reattached this week so I am very much reminded how fragile health is. So I may have been a little foolhardy completely rejigging my setup this morning but it wasn't my fault the XPSDR was delivered. It was somewhat less than new price as dealer had to lend it out brand new to another customer while his 555PS arrived - so has been run in. But of a wiring faff but we are all connected and the step-up in SQ is just marvellous. A playlist just to compare was listened to earlier while waiting and have just restarted the process and the definition and separation are just awesome. The 272 is serving my 200DR and a pair of Focal 906 speakers that really have come alive. I justified on the grounds that a) am still working so still have replacement money coming in and just had a nice divi announced on my company shares but think I need to keep head down now - enjoy what I have and ignore 250 envy etc. Like HH I am looking forward to many hours of happy listening.

Easy. Trade in your XDs that you're not using in the new apartment.

The 250 lead is stereo, whereas the 300 leads are mono. Two 250 leads will work, but the advice from Naim was that a pair of mono leads will sound better. The other, practical, thing to bear in mind is that these leads take forever to run in, so if you added a new lead when you already have a well run in one, is that the two channels will very likely sound different for a good while.

I must say that, listening to the new Anouar Brahem album now, I wonder how it can get better. But, of course it will. That’s the way it is.

I thought the 272 has two output ports designed for 300 connections, I will have to check the back of mine

Posted on: 20 October 2017 by hungryhalibut

It does, and they are both stereo.

Ah okay, so how will the 300 connect is it one cable connected to the 272 then splits to service the 300 ?

Posted on: 20 October 2017 by Bob the Builder

I thought the 272/250 DR was the 2 box eighth wonder of the hifi world where the more sage 'been there done all that' 'sick of all the upgraditis' amongst us ended up.

Thanks Lindsay. I don’t see why people feel the need to make snarky comments. Only recently I was helping Bob with his subwoofer connections, and this is how I’m repaid. One wonders sometimes why one bothers. Badlands, for some reason, likes to take a pop from time to time, and I have no idea what I’ve ever done to offend. If I knew what I’d done I’d be very happy to apologise. Me banging on about my 272 is no different to those who live their Tellurium cables, Chord DACs or Dynaudio speakers. I was simply reporting my positive findings, and it’s a shame when a wholly positive thread is spoilt by negativity. The fact that so many people have been so kind more than outweighs any negativity though.

Thanks Nigel, I'm a long way from the NAP300 but enjoying my CB250 (olive facia) on the end of my 272.

one hell of a system you will have in a few weeks, enjoy
