Blimey, the 272 is even better than I thought it was...
Posted by: hungryhalibut on 19 October 2017
I’ve been using my beloved 272 since June 2015, with the addition of an XPSDR in autumn that year. Yesterday I installed a brand new 555 PS DR, with a new S-XPS Burndy. Rather like when I bought the XPS two years ago I didn’t try the 555 first, and when I picked it up from the shop Dan from Naim was there for a Uniti open day. All Dan said was ‘you’ll love it, even straight out of the box’. And he was right, and then some. I thought the system was sounding great before, but the 555 has moved it to a different level. The music is so much more real, leaping out of the speakers in a much more lifelike way. Everything is clearer, so you get more into the music. The speakers sound a lot bigger too, which I imagine is the impact of the power supply on the preamp. Five hours later to was sounding better still, and of course things will improve further over the coming weeks.
It’s bloody expensive, it weighs a ton, but blimey it’s good. The idea of a £6,500 power supply on a £3,500 streaming preamp is perhaps bit odd, but the combination is just incredible. I know there are a few others using this combination, and that they have said how much better the 555 makes the 272, and perhaps I underestimated how much difference it would make: now I have one at home I am very much over rather than underwhelmed, which is always good.
Friday night, glass of red, sit back, and enjoy the now even better music
We are off to see Fairport Convention tonight, in the Baptist Church, with only 300 people. Live music is even better, but as it’s the Baptist Church we will only have tea.
i recall quite some time ago, i replaced the XPS on my then CDX with a 555PS and was utterly gob-smacked by the enhanced performance ---- and thats before the DR upgrade. now i am running these beasts (now DR) on my NDS to good effect.
So, congratulations Nigel!!
I dont know the 272 at all, but i can imagine the power amp upgrade for it to NAP300DR will also be quite significant (especially into the wonderful SL2s) -- i guess you know this already anyhow as you have run NAP300 before and its only one box extra.
enjoy!!

Congratulations Nigel, enjoy both the night out as well as the coming years immersed in sound from your most excellent system!

Easy. Trade in your XDs that you're not using in the new apartment.
I suppose that might work SS,but I am not ready to part with those yet.i bet this thread has you thinking 555 too,you have not changed your setup in way too long.Funny that you speak up now,you were the one that told me I was crazy when I originally wanted a 555 for my 272.HH can confirm that I was on the right track to begin with.
HH,despite all the snarky remarks,I am very interested in your thoughts on the improvements that the 555 brings over the XPS...keep us posted as it settles in.

All the best.

Thanks Lindsay. I don’t see why people feel the need to make snarky comments. Only recently I was helping Bob with his subwoofer connections, and this is how I’m repaid. One wonders sometimes why one bothers. Badlands, for some reason, likes to take a pop from time to time, and I have no idea what I’ve ever done to offend. If I knew what I’d done I’d be very happy to apologise. Me banging on about my 272 is no different to those who live their Tellurium cables, Chord DACs or Dynaudio speakers. I was simply reporting my positive findings, and it’s a shame when a wholly positive thread is spoilt by negativity. The fact that so many people have been so kind more than outweighs any negativity though.
Nigel, sleep soundly in the knowledge that the number of people on here who appreciate your advice and experience of all things Naim from a listener's perspective, far outnumber those who do not. So often I read an OP on here explaining a dilemma followed by many well intentioned replies. Then you chime in and I think 'of course, that makes most sense'. Your help and advice is always spot on IMO.
I hope this does not come across as condescending or patronising, I just want to tell it as I see it.
Congratulations on the 555DR and the forthcoming 300DR. You may have seen on here that I recently attended the Audiobarn recent demo day and heard a 272/555DR front end feeding a 300DR and then feeding 2 x active 250DRs into some Kudos Titan 707s all with a full SL loom. I was genuinely amazed at the 272/555DRs capability, even though the active system and the revealing 707s were pushing them to the max.
I am very pleased you have come through this traumatic experience and have such a positive outlook on life. Although I read of your accident and recovery on here a while ago, I didn't realise you were so close to death. That of course is now in the past and you have wonderful music and a holiday to look forward to.
All the very best to you and your family.
Enjoy Fairport, Nigel - a favourite of mine from Sandy Denny days. Live the moment - having seen Tom Petty this summer in Hyde Park this summer, I try to get as much live stuff as i can. But having a great system at home is great and the 272/XPS combo is truly awesome compared to the bare set up. It is already opening new vistas on the music collection after just a few hours. If you enjoy the 272/555PS/300DR as much as I am enjoying my setup we will be walking around with a permanent smile on our faces

No 555 for me. Too much cash to put out. I'm still trying to convince myself to get SL SC but having a hard time of that. I'm sure it will happen after more time persuading myself. That said I'm sure the 555 is a great piece but for me it just seems like a step too far. Hell what I have now is a step I never thought I would take. Lol I won't say never but I need to enjoy what I have for a couple of years before I start the upgrades again. These boxes are still fresh to me.
Away from the computer for a day, and then such an eventful day. Congratulation HH on your new box and the other two boxes in the pipeline!! This shows the ugrade bug is a proper disease that keeps coming back...
Nigel,
I am absolutely delighted for you and your partner. Finally, you are able to look forward to early retirement with a degree of financial security after such a horrendous accident. It's good to have you around on this forum, even though we have yet to meet in person.
As for tweaking an already lovely system with a 555PSDR and a 300DR, good for you, so long as they are within your allowed budget.
Enjoy the recorded music on your return from a wonderful visit to Milano!
Best regards, FT
Hi Nigel
I'm so glad you've come out of such a horrendous year with some financial security and some positive news. I hope your retirement is long, as healthy as possible and you and Hilary enjoy it to the full.
OTOH, I really hate you. I have tried hard not to think about a 555 for my 272 and then you come along and tell us just how much better than the XPS it sounds! At least, if I go the ATC active route, the temptation to move to a 300 is removed. I think I should stop frequenting this madhouse.
Enjoy Milan.
Roger
Hungryhalibut posted:Drewy posted:Good point about the 300 interconnects but it's an expensive upgrade with two being needed. I'm still on the standard ones and am still enjoying what I've got. I am not going to demo any for now but might be tempted to buy if a pair came up used at a bargain price.
£3,258 If I recall correctly. They are coming too. I don’t want to be without the full SL loom. It works so well with the DR amplifiers.
Can I have first refusal when you buy a Nova?
You got there in the end HH
Hungryhalibut posted:We are off to Milan next week. I hear it’s quite good for clothes shopping.
Ah, Milano. Please forgive my unsolicited recommendation, but we had a lovely dinner at Ceresio 7 when we were there this time last year. It's truffle season, they have endless Barolo, there are 7-foot tall Russian models wearing chartreuse fur coats -- a memorable scene (even for this jaded New Yorker) and perfect for a celebratory dinner!
I must resist the temptation to try a 555PS DR as I am certain it will not go back....
Congrats on the new addition.
Coming to this a bit late as I've been on hols for a fortnight, but congrats Nigel; welcome to the 272/555DR/300DR club. You'll be astounded by what the 300DR does.
Sit back and enjoy!
Thanks. I’m already pretty astounded by the difference the 555 makes. I’m really looking forward to getting the 300, though it’s good to have a little while without it, so I can hear the benefits of the power supply first. It’s weird - everything is so much more real and engaging, and music somehow seems easier to listen to - I suppose it’s because things are more natural. There is a lot more detail in the sound, yet it’s not off putting in the way that highly detailed systems can sometimes be, because everything hangs together so well. It’s quite amazing really. I once put a 555 on a CDS3, and was very pleased with the extra drive and energy, yet the addition of the 555 to the 272 seems to give a far bigger improvement. Maybe it’s because both the source and the preamp are improved at the same time. Whatever, it doesn’t matter.
More natural was how I described the difference when auditioning the 555 and XPS with the 272
More natural is the new inky black
Or maybe he means more natural inky black....
best

As black as a plain chocolate digestive.........

Try a plain chocolate Hobnob, you get more natural texture in the sound!
Hungryhalibut posted:I’m just off for a haircut, and I’ve washed my Diesel jeans.
Ah, washing jeans eh.
Best to get a few pairs that don't get anywhere near soiled from continuous usage.
I have Diesel jeans from way back some good years that haven't even been washed yet !!
One can’t have too much inky blackness, but the same cannot be said for Digestives or Hobnobs.
What so special about Diesel jeans or are they a status symbol ?
