Blimey, the 272 is even better than I thought it was...

I’ve been using my beloved 272 since June 2015, with the addition of an XPSDR in autumn that year. Yesterday I installed a brand new 555 PS DR, with a new S-XPS Burndy. Rather like when I bought the XPS two years ago I didn’t try the 555 first, and when I picked it up from the shop Dan from Naim was there for a Uniti open day. All Dan said was ‘you’ll love it, even straight out of the box’. And he was right, and then some. I thought the system was sounding great before, but the 555 has moved it to a different level. The music is so much more real, leaping out of the speakers in a much more lifelike way. Everything is clearer, so you get more into the music. The speakers sound a lot bigger too, which I imagine is the impact of the power supply on the preamp. Five hours later to was sounding better still, and of course things will improve further over the coming weeks.
It’s bloody expensive, it weighs a ton, but blimey it’s good. The idea of a £6,500 power supply on a £3,500 streaming preamp is perhaps bit odd, but the combination is just incredible. I know there are a few others using this combination, and that they have said how much better the 555 makes the 272, and perhaps I underestimated how much difference it would make: now I have one at home I am very much over rather than underwhelmed, which is always good.
Nothing special about Diesel jeans from the last few seasons. Too much skinny carrot shaped for my chunky thighs.
M&S for me - I get through them at a rate of knots gardening, painting, DIY etc. not to mention crawling around equipment racks that I’m not allowed any posh ones - Not that I was ever a follower of fashion

Please do say more HH. I'm pondering a re-entry to the world of Vinyl. I'd love to know more about why you think your P2 was a daft idea. Sound quality not up to expectations? Surface noise? Just too much Faff?
Before HH replies or not. I have been thinking about resurrecting my vinyl collection. But I have enjoyed my cd collection at a touch on the iPad and the thought of wandering around the room on my knees looking in cupboards again, put me off.
I’m not going to say any more about it. It’s history.

Could it not be that HH's 'other half' (much nicer to refer to her as Hilary) is just as excited by the new acquisitions? Time to kick such gender based stereotyping into the long grass.
Tim, I like the sentiment but no, she is not as excited as I am. She can easily hear the difference but she simply doesn’t care about it. As we have always done we split our money down.the middle, through good times and bad, so she gets precisely the same lump sum to spend as she wishes. She has mentioned a motorbike - she has a full bike licence - but since my accident it worries me. We’ll see.
Tell her it's a bad idea. I've seen too many people smashed and broken from motorbike incidents in my profession. I keep telling one of my good friends the same thing to no avail. Better to relax take some regular exercise and enjoy the music. Congratulations on the new purchase. Recently ordered my 272/250 bare. Better start a long term saving plan by the sounds of things.

I thought diesel jeans were what you got from wiping your hands on your thighs when the pump doesn't stop quickly enough when filling the car, but I gather the capital D isn't an error but signifies a brand....

+1 My best man had a really bad bike accident a few years ago -- spent months in the hospital and almost lost a leg. A miracle actually that they managed to restore the leg... And even the most careful biker is surrounded by careless motorists -- the world is full of idiots and most of them get access to a car....
-1! I have been riding motorbikes for over 40 years (nearly all of those years as my only or main form of transport) without injury and feel much safer on a bike than in a car as I am more alert and aware and I have more options when something untoward occurrs. If you assume every driver is an idiot who can't see you and ride accordingly then you will be fine.
Sorry for the thread hijack - I'm off to wipe the biscuit crumbs off my Diesel jeans.
10 years ago today someone pulled out in front of my brother on his motorbike. 7 day’s from now will mark the day they turned off the machine.
Anyway let’s get back on topic
Just listening to some Diana Krall singing some standards on the 272/555/250 and I must say she sounds great. Timing, swing, instrument separation, soundstage all there in spades. Utterly effortless. An ineffably good 3 box system! Envious about your upcoming 300dr HH, but sounds like you deserve it after your travails. Now, I'm off for a bike ride!

I recently try a mid level turntable which was not bad but was not better than streaming....
Now Dr.Feickert Woodpacker 2 is all different story, not every album is very different but some albums sound far better than streaming to my ears, good copies of blue note albums for example... new LPs are a mix bag.
So if it is a nostalgic entry low level , why not, but do not except a very different SQ otherwise you need to invest in it...
low budget analog is a nostalgic, decorative, mediocre and inconvenient source rather than SQ, it is not too bad but it is not better than most of the digital
Specially with some albums divided in 4LPs.... Listening Pompeii Live with a turntable is almost a sports activity

Pity really
I for one, would much rather hear about Planar vinyl experiences than Diesel jeans, cookies, trips to Milano, personal illness etc.
I have a Project Debut Carbon TT which is suitable to occasionaly listen to some vinyl. When paired with a mediocre technics / bose amp, it works nicely. When connected to my Naim stuff, it is clearly below expectations. It shows all flaws in the design: rumble and hum.
It's like the soup in the office cantine. You can add peper and salt but it won't get any better.
The digital sources are much cheaper to get quite good results.
Ardbeg10y is disappointed by low / mid range of TT's.

Have to disagree
I have yet to hear reasonable streaming setups which comes remotely close to decent vinyl playback in terms of musical enjoy, something like a new Planar3 or s/h Planar6 are really good to my ears with no rumble or hum through a 102/hc/180. Sometime I do enjoy a Planar 1 through a cheaper Rega amp and its fine, more than fine at the asking price level. Project decks are maybe another story, those Ive heard didn't move me at all.
Indeed a 272/555 is another class alltogether, it better be for that kind of money, something I would never purchase myself not even if I won the lottery

My assumption in this tread that someone has a 272 and thinking of adding a turntable.... then low/mid level turntable losses its meaning for SQ improvement, it always nice addition but not an SQ improvement.
The thread was nothing at all to do with turntables when HH started it, but like many of the more entertaining threads, this one has been on a voyage of discovery. Who knows where it will end up?

I'm not sure; but it's a long, long way to Tipperary.
Glad to hear you;re enjoying your system so much!

Start your own thread then. Some of us quite enjoy the picaresque meanderings of these threads. Why make negative comments?
My favorite Italian wine is the Soave Classico Monte Carbonare. It has the same smoothness as a 555PS powering an 272 into a 300DR. Almost silk.
Hopefully HH will have the opportunity to comment on their relative merits after his latest sojurn :-)
After a few glasses of Italian wine even DAB radio and MP3 sound superb.
It’s a beautiful day here in Milano and, with Massimo and Silvia we have been to the roof of the Duomo and out for lunch. The Diesel jeans are looking good, especially since the pre-opera diet. I can piss off two people in one sentence if I try really, really hard!
The 250 leaves on Monday next week, and the SL wire this Friday, so I’m hoping that the 300 appears this week, otherwise it will be Qb listening only.
