NAP250DR Demo

Posted by: Mark Carwardine on 27 October 2017

I did a demo last week at a dealers of a 250DR and used my NAP200 (non DR) as a reference. I was very surprised that their was virtually no difference. The dealer also agreed their was virtually no difference.

Leaving the dealers i really wondered why there was no difference. All report i have read say it is a big step. The source that the dealer used was a Supernait 2 rather than a dedicated pre-amp.

Could this be the reason I could not hear any difference? Or maybe my ears are at the limit of their capability......

You chimed in with a comment that made absolutely no sense. Read it again and try and explain to me how it helps anybody. The preamp part of the SN2 is nowhere near what a 552 is.

Oh brother, you really just don't get it, I would quit while you think you're ahead. I would suggest reading the whole thread in it's entirety, instead of wearing blinders.

Very tactful Nigel

Well, people really do spout complete bollocks sometimes.

And…..not so tactful.

I must say, I prefer tactful, much nicer.

The old 250.2 was sometimes accused of being slow. But when I heard it with a 552 it wasn’t to my ears

It’s been advised that that natural partner of a 250.2 was more 252/sc or at the very least 282/SC.

these were before the HC DR was released

there arent many reviews of the 250.2 but the one that is easily available shows it was fronted by a 252/Sc

i did not like very much  250.2 with my own 282/HcDR as my speakers B&w 805 at that time seemed to like the smaller bandwidth of the nap 200.

The reasons though I think the old 250.2 was more demanding was the bass. Fun when it was properly setup but a bit bloated when not matched properly.

More than silly as the above combination is one of the recommended systems on the Naim website.

282/HC 250DR is the best amp I've ever had.

It's a cracker, providing you partner appropriately.

And I've been through so many combinations both Naim and not Naim which I won't list for reasons of brevity in this thread.

Going back to the op I wouldn't put a cd5x or a SN2 in front of a 250DR

Nor would I put a cd5xs in front of a SN2 - tried it, definitely not for me, in fact this mismatch could be the start of the problem.

I will do a demo at another dealer and ask to listen to the 282 & 250DR. Cover all bases.
